Not the same anon but I'm interested in knowing what you think about the gameplay. Also are you ok with your post being shared on the Rain World subreddit? That's how I found your original post.

I'd like to answer my opinions on the watcher DLC after some more time has passed and the dust has settled (have gotten several asks, but would like some more time to formulate everything constructively), however I did look up the reddit post you mentioned and it does make me... uncomfortable? I don't want to be some figurehead where my opinion is more "worthy" because of experiences I've had, I just wanted to honestly share how I felt.

The reddit post is also inaccurate. I'm not an "ex Rainworld employee" - I was a MSC (note, the fan mod, long before Akupara) developer (concept artist, writer and worked on palettes) and Downpour playtester. Some of my information comes from that experience, on top of personally knowing one of the beta Watcher playtesters. I have been open in the past about my negative experiences with Akupara and Downpour (including art theft), so I know how the internals of the projects they oversee look. The person I know's experience playtesting Watcher sounded very similar to my experience playtesting Downpour. Me pointing out a lack of things like achievements or pearls also is not me saying that they're guaranteed content - I don't know that, there is no way for me to. I am pointing out the fact that they are things you would expect from a fleshed out DLC of any game (steam achievements, at least, even for beating it), and simply brought them up as examples to emphasize the point I was making.

I hold absolutely NO ill will towards the developers. Projects like this are always a labor of love. The teams were just different, and Watcher unfortunately was forced under a much more pressing time crunch than Downpour, of which had FIVE YEARS of being it's own little mod project in the corner undisturbed, without any deadlines imposed on it, versus the Watcher, which had a deadline attributed to it on initial reveal. The person I know who was a beta tester adores the team and feels very sad that a lot of their vision had to be cut back or planned for later due to the inability for it to make it to initial release due to these deadlines. They agree that all blame goes to Akupara.

So uh…I assume you didn’t like the watcher dlc very much, then? (I’ve seen barely any of it myself and don’t have much of an opinion on it)

I don't. I really wish I could have, but unfortunately it has some very glaring issues to me that I cannot overlook; namely, the DLC was not only incredibly time crunched (playtesters onboarded a month before release, bugs fixed as late as last minute) but also unfinished in the eyes of the developers, as per a discord announcement that had a snippet from James, as seen here.

"Hello @RW News! This is James from Videocult bringing you good tidings. Right now we are hard at work finishing up development on The Watcher... ... On March 28th Rain World: The Watcher will release on PC. But that will not be the whole story. We have multiple updates planned, and the final arc of the Watcher will conclude with the console release, at a date TBD."

I'm tired of publisher meddling. I would have been happy to have waited an additional year for the DLC to have proper bugtesting, polish, and be the full story they wanted to tell, alongside feeling fully implemented - with things like pearls or even steam achievements, both of which the DLC lacks. I don't hold any ill will to the developers, because I know the internals of this kind of thing look awful, especially with publishers involved, due to my experience with Downpour. At a certain point a product, regardless of where it's at in development, has to be shoved out because publishers promised a certain date and already paid for merchandise to be ready for sale to celebrate. As it stands, that's how I feel about the DLC without any spoilers about it or it's gameplay, but if you're interested in that, I could do a writeup about it as well. I can't confidently recommend trying the DLC if you're on the fence until, at the very least, more updates roll out that fix more game breaking bugs and hopefully add more QOL to make the experience flow more smoothly.

I don't mean to harass you at all, and you don't have to answer this!! I'm just not sure where or who else to ask and would like to know definitively if possible, but are there any planned updates to the wingcat mod? Obvs okay if not, or if you aren't certain at this time! The mod is great as-is, it lets me play Rain World without most of the pains that come with playing Rain World, you know? It actually got me interested in learning code! I'm so autistic abt this mod it made me want to learn c#

Aw you're okay! Unfortunately no updates are planned for Wingcat anymore as I'm just too busy in my life and I'm satisfied with where the mod is at now.
