To The Person That Broke My Heart, an open letter
I'm still here. Though it has been years since I've told you how I felt, you glanced away to a different kind of entertainment. Every single time. I don't know how to feel about what you have done, and what your actions have done to me. Should I be relieved that I am sitting in an unlocked cage and that I may escape your selfishness at any time? Or should I feel shame that these wings shake when I open the doors of the cage and my worries tell me "What if they finally look my way when I go?"
How pitiful of me. How disgusting of me to depend on someone who will never see me.
You have broken my heart so many times. Why must I forgive you for everything?
You compliment my beauty as you pluck my feathers and I don't know if I should smile because you've complimented me or cry because I know what I see in the mirror. I know what I am, and I know what I have become. You have broken me.
To the person who I once loved,
The image of me you fascinate of is still here.
But I have flown away.

The Artist
I made a poem for you, But you gave it to someone new.
A person you and I knew,
Surely, it wasn't I that had value.
Broke an artist's soul,
Her heart turned to coal.
You were once a goal,
That they can never now condole.

4 Reading Strategies to Retire This Year (Plus 6 to Try Out!)
A reaction and personal thoughts on an article.
A partner and I read an article titled "4 Reading Strategies to Retire This Year (Plus 6 to Try Out!)". As English major students, we went ahead and decided to share our thoughts and opinions on what the article provided.
We have been tasked to read texts in our classes at least once. Teachers then would make tasks or activities to engage the students in their reading experiences. These strategies can make or break the students reading experience. It can either engage the students, making them fall in love with reading and after the task, read more books, or discourage the student from reading as they find this a huge chore and burden. In the article, there is a list of reading strategies that should be avoided and encouraged. These strategies are as follows:
Reading Strategies to AVOID
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Reading Logs (and other rote accountability tasks)
Reading logs require students to have entries and write the amount of time, pages, and other notable properties of a text. This is discouraged as it is believed that students only read for the sake of having an entry to their reading logs without actually understanding what they are reading.
My partner and I agree that this should be avoided as making reading as a form of 'task' or 'chore' won't encourage students to deepen their knowledge through reading. In fact, we both believe that using this approach would take longer to properly understand a text.
2. Turn-taking Oral Reading Practices
The most popular form of turn-taking oral reading is recognized as Round-Robin Reading wherein a student is called to read aloud in class and the rest is expected to silently read along. After a few passages, another student is asked to follow along where the last student ended. It is said that many teachers have been told not to do this form of reading practice, but still did so.
We both agree that this does not encourage reading behavior for students. Instead, it pressures students to follow along with a text instead of letting them understand it at their own pace. It also induces anxiety among students. Both of us experienced this form of reading practice and agree that it did not really work well for us in terms of understanding and gaining knowledge, and oftentimes we need to re-read it by ourselves.
3. Awarding prizes for reading
Giving prizes is not entirely a bad form of reinforcement in reading, but the article encourages us to avoid providing prizes that don't align with reading. In order to make better reading habits, the prizes should be aligned with reading such as more reading time, more books, and the such.
Both my partner and I agree that rewards are not much of a motivation for us if it's not worth it, nevertheless, rewards are nice to receive. We agree with the article that rewards aligned with reading would be better compared to candy and toys as rewards.
4. Overemphasis on reading as a discrete skill
This reading strategy focuses on reading texts and having lectures afterward such as how to summarize and paraphrase. After that, the students are expected to have a reading and apply what was taught to them. In a study called the baseball study, it was observed that students who have more knowledge on the actual topic of the text do better compared to those who read without prior knowledge.
My partner and I are at an impasse with this approach. One does not like this approach they believe it only encourages reading as a skill. Something to be used when needed and not as a habit. Meanwhile, the other believes this is a good approach as it teaches reading efficiency.
Reading Approaches that work better
Tumblr media
1. Reading accountability partners
This approach works in pairs. The students will meet for at least 10 minutes a day to discuss their previous reading. This allows students to hold their peers accountable and understand roles in groups, making sure that everyone follows through with their tasks.
We both agree that this is a good approach to reading as it helps students interact more with each other and learn the importance of group work. The students will benefit from this by improving both their reading skills and their social skills.
2. Choral reading
Instead of a round-robin reading approach, the class reads aloud together with the teacher which supposedly reduces the exposure of struggling readers.
Neither of us believes that this is a good way of reading. We believe that it is only useful for a younger demographic but it would still be rather chaotic, for lack of a better word. Additionally. we think that it would cause some problems for students who read better silently instead of aloud.
3. Scaffolded silent reading
A way to let students read on their own and at their own pace. This introduces them to advanced words and how they can even answer simple activities like a K-W-L Chart.
We believe that this is a good reading approach for the students if and only if their respective teachers provide them with enough prior knowledge of the terminologies that will be new to them in their readings.
4. Teacher read-aloud and modeling
This method allots time for teachers to read for a few minutes to their students while they listen silently. They found that many of their students enjoyed being read to.
Once again, we are at an impasse as we have differing opinions on the matter. One of us believes that this is a good strategy as it teaches students how reading should be and how it can be inspiring for them. Meanwhile the other disagrees and thinks that this method does not work too well with students with possible learning abilities. Simply listening to a storyteller won't provide too much engagement.
5. Reading buddies
Reading buddies are very similar to reading accountability partners, but with this approach, there could be a group of 3 and the group would consist of students around 3 levels apart where the lower level can pick their reading material to inspire themselves in reading, and the higher level one to engage them and teach them more.
Neither of us has the same opinion on this approach. One believes that this is a positive way to inspire young learners to read and get a feel for a community-based environment. Meanwhile, the other one believes that it may cause pressure among the students with forced interaction.
6. Building background knowledge
Using this approach, teachers are expected to teach the students terminologies and build their vocabulary prior to providing them a text to ready. It is best when said terminologies can be observed in the text that the students are tasked to read.
Both of us believe that this is a good reading strategy. We have personally experienced this type of strategy as the students and it worked out really well with the students being able to easily navigate and understand the text.
These are all the reading strategies mentioned in the article and our respective thoughts. We hope that it was easy to understand and that you also form your own opinions. As for educators and future educators such as ourselves, we hope to have enlightened you with these different strategies as our own educator enlightened us.

FaintAshen's English Morphology Class not-so-101!!!
Morphology is the study of words and their parts. Odd how morphology itself is made up of two words. It came from the German word Morphologie from the year 1817. The term morpho- means "shape" and -logy or -logie means "the study", making it the study of shapes. In a more general sense it is the study of shape, form, external structure or arrangement.
Under morphology, there is what we call Word Formation Processes - or Morphological Processes - which is a means by which new words are produced either by modification of existing words or by complete innovation, which in turn become a part of the language.
We will only be going over 9 types of word formation processes along with their meanings and examples.
AFFIXATION
The most common type of derivation is the addition of one or more affixes to a root, as in the word derivation itself. This process is called affixation, a term which covers both prefixation and suffixation. But I think I should just show instead of going on and on until someone dies from suffocation. There are three types of affixation, prefix; suffix; and circumfix.
Prefix
Characterized by placement of an operator before its operand or before its two operands if it is a binary operator.
Ex.:
/a-/theist
/ab-/normal
/anti-/biotic
/contra-/flow
/ante-/chamber
/co-/exist
/en-/case
/exo-/skeleton
/hetero-/sexual something that which I am not.
/hyper-/active
Suffix
An affix occurring at the end of a word, base, or phrase.
Ex.:
fall/-acy/ the only unethical thing I have committed.
rebutt/-al/
bore/-dom/
argu/-ment/ the only thing I'm good at, which is why I joined the debate club.
eradic/-ate/ is what I wish we could do with SARS-19 smh
awak/-en/
valor/-ize//-ise/
emotion/-al/
decis/ive/ something that which I am not.
effort/-less/
Circumfix
A prefix and a suffix attached to a root or stem, as the a and -ing in a-going.
Ex.:
/il-/legal/-ly/
/i-/mortal/-ity/
/im-/mobil/-ity/
/un-/imagin/-able/
/un-/account/-able/
/im-/practic/-able-
/in-/different/-ly/
/in-/exact/-ly/
/un-/equal/-ly/
/un-/expected/-ly/
BORROWING
Is one of the most common sources of new words in English. The words formed by borrowing of words from other languages are called loanwords. At least there are no money loans.
Ex.:
English - Tagalog - Spanish
Horse - Kabayo - Caballo
Restroom - Kubeta - Cubeta
Electricity - Kuryente - Corriente
Cooking oil - Mantika - Manteca
Christmas lantern - Parol - Farol
Dish - Putahe - Potaje
Maybe - Siguro - Seguro
Shoelace - Sintas - Cinta
Of course - Siyempre - Siempre
Support - Suporta - Soportar
BLENDING
Speakers take two words and merge them based not on morpheme structure but on sound structure. The resulting words are called blends.
Ex.:
Blended Word - Root Word 1 - Root Word 2
Bash - Bat - Mash
Breathalyzer - Breath - Analyzer
Clash - Clap - Crash
Electrocute - Electricity - Execute
Emoticon - Emotion - Icon
Frienemy - Friend - Enemy
Sitcom - Situation - Comedy gosh, I love watching these
Sportscast - Sports - Broadcast
Staycation - Stay - Vacation
Workaholic - Work - Alcoholic This is me. Right now. Being an alcoholic workaholic
COMPOUNDING
Forms a word out of two or more root morphemes. The words are called compounds or compound words.
Ex.:
note + book (n + n)
blue + berry (adj. + n)
work + room (v + n)
breast + feed (n + v)
stir + fry (v + v)
high + lighg (adj. + v)
break + up (v + prep)
out + run (prep + v)
bitter + sweet (adj. + adj.)
in + to (prep + prep)
CLIPPING
A type of abbreviation of a word in which one part is 'clipped' off the rest, and the remaining word now means essentially the same thing as what the whole word means or meant.
Ex.:
/auto/mobile
/butt/ocks
/calc/ulus
/champ/ion
/photo/graph
/chem/istry
/co-op/erativ
earth/quake/
in/flu/enza
neck/tie/
ABBREVIATION
A shortened form of a written word or phrase used in place of the whole word or phrase.
Ex.:
D.I.Y. - Do It Yourself
R.S.V.P. - Répondez, s'il vous plait
C.C.C. - The Civilian Conservation Corps
C.W.A. - The Civil Works Administration
I.I.R.C. - If I recall/remember correctly
I.Q. - Ignorance Quotient
P.A. - Personal Assistant
V.P. - Vice President
E.T.A. - Estimated time of arrival
V.S. - Versus
BACKFORMATION
A shortened word created from a longer word.
Ex.:
Backformation Words - Source Words
Aviate - Aviation
Bulldoze - Bulldozer
Translate - Translation
Hazy - Haze
Snowy - Snow
Drowse - Drowsy
Injure - Injury
Resurrect - Resurrection
Scavenge - Scavenger
Destroy - Destruction
CONVERSION
Assigns an existing word to a different word class, part of speech, or syntactic category.
Ex.:
Bottled (of a liquid)
(To) Butter
(A) Must
Regular (of a person)
Final/s (in place or ranking in competition)
(To) Empty
(To) Dirty (one's self)
(To) Dry
(To score a) hit
Cheat (Turned to noun)
COINAGE
The word formation process in which a new word is created either deliberately or accidentally without using the other word formation processes and often from seemingly nothing.
Ex.:
Muggle That's us. All of us. Yeah. Yup. My letter never came.
Band-aid
Escalator
Google
Nylon
Psychedelic
Quark
Factoid
Frisbee
Linoleum
Those are only 9 of the MANY, and I mean
M A N Y
types of word formation processes, but I do hope I have expounded them well. You can still learn more with a bit of curiousity and research! And be sure to like and reblog this so that my English professor passes me this semester. Thank you all for reading and have a wonderful day, everyday!

“Love Hurts” (Continuation soon)
I love you. I love you yet it hurts. I love you, but I know I can’t because I know you love someone else. I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but I still love you. I never expected for us to become more than just friends, but why does it still hurt my heart deeply? Sometimes I question if you even feel the same, you’re giving me so much mixed emotions and signals that I don’t even know if what you say is true when you say “I love you”. Because I do.
But who am I to complain? It’s my own emotions, and it’s not like you made me fall for you, right? It just so happened that I loved you deeply, yet you liked someone else. I was willing to do and give everything to you, while you gave those things to her. Yet, here I am. The fool that sat there and continued to be blinded, thinking if I gave and did what you wanted, you’d fall for me too.
But that’s not how our little world works, does it?
It’s just a delusion my mind kept.
Yet I still believe in it, even if I fully know that I will never have a chance with you.
No, not after what I had said. Not after what I did. Not after what could have been us. It was simply a dream out of my reach.
