listen. aging into your thirties rocks. yes your joints get a little creaky. yes you can’t sleep in a pretzel on the floor anymore after a concert or a convention. and you lose some friends. but the thing is that you sort out who your real friends are and you sort out who you really are. and you get to see your friends settling into careers they like, and adopt new dogs and cats, and you find a job you can stand, and get really good at arts and crafts, and maybe that book you loved as a kid gets a movie deal and it doesn’t suck, and you learn to like new food and bake your own bread, and you realize that the great portfolio of self harm scars you all used to curate are going white with age and not updated, and half your friends are a different gender now and so much happier and maybe you are too, and you know who you are, and that it’s a journey and not a revelation. it’s a direction you’re headed, and you’re enjoying the trip.

AMITY SHOULD HAVE BEEN black. That’s it. That’s all my comments.

Okay, that’s not all. This show was made by disney whom is known to not be very inclusive all around the board. Most of their films and shows are very white, very straight, and very heteronormative in general and that’s all to persurve the “Disney” brand.

Which is kind of weird because the queer subtext is undeniable and they mostly put it into their villains.

However that has a deeper reasoning as there were laws or atleast rules in place which prohibited artists from portraying same sex couples or people in a good light until way later.

That’s also why in a lot of old films from the 19’s and before the queer coded characters where villainous and/ or predatory.

But to not bore you all to death I will leave it at that and maybe get into it deeper another day. As for The Owl House I was very suprised that the main character Luz is a person of colour.

She is allowed to blush at both boys and girls. And Amity is allowed to be flustered at her crush. Besides that it is confirmed canon that she wanted Luz to go to ‘grom’ with her and the grom-monster that manifested into your worst fear was Luz rejecting her.

This show wasn’t queer coded, it is undeniably queer. Amity has a crush on Luz. And Luz is bisexual. It’s the show all of us deserved to grow up on.

Stay with me, this is going to sound a little sappy. But we all deserve to see ourselves on screen. And most people already know that they aren’t straight early on. Queerness isn’t an adult thing and we shouldn’t make it that way either.

It’s heart warming to see characters that I — us all — can see ourselves in, in a show for children. So next generation can see themselves there too and it won’t be a weird discovery that there are people who feel the same as you do.

That way none of us will feel as alone, or weird, or crazy, anymore. Hopefully.

Is this a recommendation?

Yes! If you don’t live in the US and want to watch it you do have to use a sketch site ( like I did ) but if you do live in America you can watch it on the Disney Animation site! <3
