remembered that iella's first husband was 20+ years older than her. and despite her being a consistent presence in the story, we never learn anything about how she ended up married to a guy two decades her senior by age 22 (<- quick back-of-napkin approximate). or literally anything else about her family, other than that they exist and are on corellia, much less anything ELSE about her life pre-corran. stackpole. stackpole please

I <3 being a portrait artist. hammered out a portrait for a sw novel character with a very clear vision in mind (like "looks mostly like this actor but with a PASSING resemblance to this other actor"). sent a picture to a friend with no context. got the response of "giving [second actor] vibes in a roundabout way." untouchable.

did my biyearly check-in on the rogue squadron film and apparently the production troubles continue, with it potentially being reworked into a new film ("star wars: starfighter," which is a repetitive and rather uncreative title) with a different director? set after tros? which means I probably have to stop complaining about how the original (?) director was ignoring every statement glucas ever made about the OT being inspired by the vietnam war and start complaining about how this new director executive produced five seasons of last man standing, a sitcom that I loathe for being reactionary at best. but that aside, they are now adding to the original threat of distasteful us military propaganda the exciting NEW threats of newcanon cameoslop and. checks notes. ryan gosling

I've been thinking about how entertaining it would be to put erisi dlarit and bror jace and corran horn in a situation of some kind, because I enjoy characters that suck as people and also they have intense personalities and preexisting emotional tension of various kinds, but the thing is that I can't really see a world where that situation, no matter the specifics, doesn't become a) homicidal, b) graphically sexual, or c) both of the above. I think corran would like it to not be any of those things, but unfortunately, the thyferrans want him like a spoiled child wants a pony for christmas, which puts them pretty firmly on the sex-murder continuum

so I've been vaguely aware ever since it happened that when disney acquired lucasfilm they established a new "canon" for star wars retconning almost the entire expanded universe into "legends". however I only like now have actually looked into what official set of media the new canon consists of, and if wookiepedia's editorial standards are to be believed the star wars canon currently includes all officially licensed media since 2014? with like a very small number of exceptions. but like those exceptions appear to all be either "it hasn't been explicitly stated if this is canon so we're being cautious" or "lego star wars is simply too silly to treat as canon so we've decided it's not".
like if I'm reading this correctly the current star wars canon is. the important legacy works, and then literally all post-disney official star wars material? like. including tie-in web series and theme park attractions and star wars themed spherical bottles of diet coke. like, under disney no star wars media in any form has been officially licensed without also being "canon". which seems like objectively less useful than the way it used to work with several different hierarchical levels of canonicity? wild. how do star wars fans put up with this

the thing that gets me about wes janson is that everyone else around him is definitely In Star Wars, but he is in a sitcom. he acts like he's expecting a laugh track to play. except for when it comes out that he killed a guy because he has to work with that guy's son. which, to be fair, in a world where kell tainer was also in a sitcom, a laugh track WOULD have played.

often, a work of fiction will present to you a character who is referred to as a man. while it is possible that this character is intended to be read as a man, it's worth noting that many writers employ a literary device known as "secret women." almost every story has at least one secret woman, and the adept reader will be able to identify which characters are actually intended to be women despite the gendered language surrounding them. failure to acknowledge secret women is a failure of reading comprehension, for which one should be sent to the stocks.

personally I think an underutilized ship dynamic is "this is so ill-advised that we are both aware on some level that it cannot possibly end in anything but a breakup so acrimonious that we'll spend the rest of our lives hunting each other for sport, but we have decided to keep making out with each other anyway."

addendum (the krytos trap, iron fist). a careful study of the x-wing books and related comics reveals that the only times wedge expresses jealousy or envy (save for one moment of passing admiration for a starfighter) are when it comes to, one, others' romantic successes, two, other people getting to have a closer relationship with luke than he does, and three, luke skywalker's romantic successes in particular. which could mean nothing.

The Sith and bodily autonomy
The rule of two creates a strict dynamic which allows sith masters unlimited access to the bodies of their apprentices, Banite masters have always abused that fact.
The most obvious instance is Vader’s suit and the control Sidious maintains over every physical aspect of Vader, but its hardly unprecedented.
In legends (namely Darth Plagueis and Maul: lockdown) Plagueis utilizes nudity/exposer to demonstrate his power over Palpatine. In the Plagueis novel Sidious’ training begins with being forcefully stripped of his clothes. This is meant to expose him to multiple things at once: the freezing temperatures of Mygeeto, and the observations and abuse of Darth Plagueis/the darkside. This act functions as an immediately sobering introduction their new dynamic.
There is also an implied threat. He could do anything, as at this point Plagueis’ has fully isolated Palpatine.
Another instance is in maul: lockdown when Plagueis sneaks into Palpatine’s apartment on Coruscant when he’s showering. It’s intentional, the idea that he can sneak in while Palpatine is at his most vulnerable is supposed to frighten him. Plagueis allows him to shower undisturbed, but his presence is once again a show of power/threat specifically made while Palpatine is undressed. It is terrifying and humiliating.
Similarly Maul’s tattoos were originally done by Sidious. This demonstrates Sidious’ power over his body and permanently marked Maul as sith. As master Palpatine utilizes exposer as humiliation and abuse similar to Plagueis.
Tumblr media
Emperor Palpatine’s visits to Vader in his bacta tank can also be explained as a part of this humiliation/intimidation ritual that’s seems consistent with this.
