November 30, 2019 | Saturday
Writer: Katreen Dominique Bandong & Eugene Mercado
Tumblr media
President Rodrigo R. Duterte orders PNP to arrest anyone vaping in public. As he announced to ban the use and importation of e-cigarettes at a press conference Tuesday, November 19, 4 days after DOH confirmed a case of vape-associated lung injury.
In late October, the Department of Health announced a 16-year-old girl, who had been using e-cigarettes for six months alongside regular cigarettes was hospitalized and had to be admitted to intensive care unit due to a severe shortness of breath. The teenager was later diagnosed with e-cigarette-associated lung injury or EVALI.
The DOH earlier called for an immediate ban on vaping. Health officials said that e-cigarettes are not a proven nicotine replacement therapy and can cause lung illness.
In response, Duterte said he is banning e-cigarettes because it is “toxic” and orders authorities to arrest people caught using them.
“Smoking is dangerous. Vaping is also dangerous; I am banning it. If you are smoking now, you will be arrested,” he added.
The Philippine National Police ordered stern measures on the use of e-cigarettes.
Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa, PNP Officer-In-Charge ordered all police units nationwide to enforce the ban on use of vapes and ensure that all violators will be arrested.
"This vaping, it contains nicotine and other chemicals that we do not know," he said. "It has not passed the FDA ... and at this time, I said 'smoking is dangerous' so vaping is also dangerous and I am banning it."
An executive order made in 2017 prohibited smoking in public places, punishable by fines. Duterte said he was concerned by the growing number of Filipinos afflicted with tobacco-related diseases.
The Philippines will join several nations across the globe in banning and creating regulations against vaping products.

ANDRES BONIFACIO: THE HERO THAT TRANSCENDS TIME
November 26, 2019 | Tuesday
Writer: Katreen Dominique Bandong
Tumblr media
As teenagers, can we ever relate to someone who lived over 100 years ago? At first glance this seems impossible, however, looking at Andres Bonifacio, a Philippine national hero, can we still say the same? Amidst the glitz and glamour his name has acquired after his birth decades ago, he still poses relevance and sense in today’s scene. His character, even before leading a heroic life of the revolution, proves that a century and a half does not change the nature of adolescents.
Did you know that Bonifacio played as a theater actor? Yes, a part-time theater actor in several moro-moro plays, he portrayed known Tagalog folklore characters such as Bernardo Carpio. It is a similar interest that youngsters of today exhibit through their appreciation for culture and the arts.
Aside from this, he is said to have been an avid reader. Historian Hambeth Ocampo claims that he grew up in the middle-class, fond of reading books like Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, The Bible, and The History of the French Revolution, despite only finishing today’s equivalent of Grade 4. This behavior is nothing short of what behaviors we observe, currently, from young people.
How about food? Surely our hero had something he craved for, like all modern millennials. And that he did. It said that his favorite meal was a home cooked “Nilitsong Manok sa Zaha” (chicken cooked in Zaha or banana trunks) a perfect pair with rice. This resonates to the youth’s contemporary passion for grilled food (e.g. Samgyupsal or Korean BBQ)
Knowing these facts, can we relate to someone from the past? Of course. Personalities and interests transcend and knows no bounds, not even time. We share commonalities in them. And now, with the upcoming celebration of his 156th year of commemoration, it is fitting that we reflect upon ourselves how someone as of normal descent grew to become a hero, as well as celebrate the life of our hero this approaching November 30th of 2019.
