The Kings men, chapter three

"Neil hesitated, then set the bag on Matt's bed and struggled out of his shirt. It was getting a little easier every day, but it hurt when he raised his arms too high and when he twisted he felt the pull at his stitches. He got his shirt over his head and to his elbows before Andrew got tired of watching him struggle and tugged the shirt loose. Andrew tossed it off to one side and didn't look to see where it landed. He was more interested in the scars and bruises covering Neil's front."

This chapter holds so many great passages I might draw another one from it asp. But in this one there was something that felt very real, a mix of pain and trust and interest and discovery, and even desire maybe.

Nora and her use of hair color is so fascinating to me.

Cause what do you mean Neil dyed his naturally vibrant hair brown to go unnoticed while Jeremy bleached his a bright blond to be noticed? What do you mean Renee dyed her hair into a rainbow, the symbol of new beginnings after hard times? What do you meeeaaannn?

Andrew being a goal keeper was quite literally the peak of character building in the entire literature history.

wdym he is THE protector of the team during a game? he is THE last line of defense? he has EVERYONE’s back? and he is AMAZING AT IT?!

and not just in the metaphorical sense (although as establish that too) but down to a literal physical level too. like? oh my god of course the character with the best reflexes that won’t let a ball past him is the character that grew up abused and constantly aware of his surroundings. and of courseeee the character that has issues with being touched and struggles to protect himself from abusers is the one wearing the most padding on the court.

andrew is the fakest idgafer because there’s no way he was chill about his sexy situationship (love of his life) giving him a QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS in stolen yakuza blood money to buy him a maserati. his dream car.

ok now one more time so we all get it: you don't 'qualify' to be a fox by virtue of being traumatized enough.

that's not the point and that's never been the point. the reason wymack got so much shit for the way he picks out his players is that he deliberately chooses people that everybody has already given up on. people who have given up on themselves. nobody thought dan wilds was going to make it out of her hometown. nobody thought kevin day was going to recover from his injury. nobody thought andrew minyard was anything more than a psychotic monster and nobody looked twice at junkies like matt, aaron, or seth. nobody thought allison reynolds could make a name for herself outside of her parents and nobody thought nicky hemmick would be able to look after two damaged kids and actually help them survive to college. renee walker and neil josten were hardly real people until natalie and nathaniel came to the foxes and built themselves new lives. its not about what happened to you. it's about who you're going to be and what you're going to do with your second chance. second, third, fourth, however many you need. just so long as it's one more than anyone else was willing to give you.

I feel like people who don’t like the idea of kevallison just don’t understand that kevin need someone who is very passionate about exy who will also tell him to shut the fuck up

allison needs someone who will treat her well but will also let her be completely independent. she needs someone who won’t underestimate her or treat her like she’s about to break, because she’s so much stronger than she gets credit for

allison is his #1 hater AND abandoned her wealth and family to play exy. she also knows when he needs to stop talking and will tell him. kevin will care for her quietly and honestly so subtly no one will ever really see it but he will and he will also acknowledge her strength and skill outside of her physical appearance. aftg but neil is genuinely wholeheartedly under the impression that andrew and kevin are boyfriends. which is basically just the first book and half of the second but i mean we let him keep that energy the whole way through. andrew says he'd blow him and neil is like ??? pretty sure kevin would take issue with that??? and andrew, thinking neil is referencing their deal, is like ??? kevin doesn't care what i do when im away from him??? and neil is like ??? but you're always with him when im around??? and andrew is like ??? i would tell him to go away??? and neil is like ??? i don't think you should do that??? and andrew is like ??? u mean u want him to watch??? and neil is like ??? i didn't agree to this but if i was going to then yes, im not going to make you send kevin away??? and anyway this is how both andrew and neil operate under the assumption that the other is angling to enter a throuple with one another and kevin day and kevin has no clue about any of this
