Romulus and Remus are doing what puppies do: chasing, tussling, nipping, nuzzling. But there’s something very un-puppylike about the snowy white 6-month olds—their size, for starters. At their young age they already measure nearly 4 ft. long, tip the scales at 80 lb., and could grow to 6 ft. and 150 lb. Then there’s their behavior: the angelic exuberance puppies exhibit in the presence of humans—trotting up for hugs, belly rubs, kisses—is completely absent. They keep their distance, retreating if a person approaches. Even one of the handlers who raised them from birth can get only so close before Romulus and Remus flinch and retreat. This isn’t domestic canine behavior, this is wild lupine behavior: the pups are wolves. Not only that, they’re dire wolves—which means they have cause to be lonely.
The dire wolf once roamed an American range that extended as far south as Venezuela and as far north as Canada, but not a single one has been seen in over 10,000 years, when the species went extinct. Plenty of dire wolf remains have been discovered across the Americas, however, and that presented an opportunity for a company named Colossal Biosciences.

hey guys! long time no hear. i decided to take a break from tumblr because a lot of things happened to me irl and then to lucky.
we got a cat. her name is mitsie and she has no tail and she is the sweetest creature on earth.

we need to move house as early as january next year so my parents are looking for a place to live.
and last but not least, the worst news of all. Lucky got diagnosed with severe bilateral coxarthrosis. aside from that, some vertebral issued mean that he could paralyse from the waist down basically any day now. and to top it all off, his knee ligaments went bye bye so he needs to go into surgery tomorrow in order to just. walk. since he cannot do that anymore.

hes not allowed to go on long walks anymore. he cannot run or jump or climb up stairs. we had our last long walk after his coxarthrosis diagnosis last month, and since then its gotten progressively worse. but we enjoyed one last nice fall day in the sun together, in the park he grew to love.
hes going into knee surgery tomorrow. its the only surgery i am willing to try for him and the only one that will improve his qol instantly, i believe. if it doesnt work out, it will be time to say goodbye. the potential treatment and medication is too expensive and with no guarantees it will work. im using up all of my funds that i kept for moving out of the country. all of my post-college job earnings. its a repeat of what happened with my old dog.
diagnosis given at the same age, of barely Seven. he is only 7! my little darling boy. my other darling little boy was also just 7. they received the same prognosis. could be 1 week! could be 2 years! my vet friends doubt it can be more than that.
i love him to the moon and back. and i dont know what to do. and i dont know what to fucking do. im mourning and i havent even lost him yet. its unfair. its stupid. i want my little walk pal with me.
anyway. i would appreciate some good thoughts for him. im sorry for the long post and for my prolonged absence. not exactly riveting content to post nor a post i was looking forward to making. sorry.

Missing out: A longer one! It's no secret that I am not a fan of outdoor cats in the slightest. They're an ecological nightmare and feral cats are responsible for an astounding amount of harm to native fauna. But there's another side to it. Being an outdoor cat is TERRIBLE. Being in ER Vet-Med I have seen every bad thing that can happen to an outdoor cat; Dog attacks, Hit by car, Parasites, Poisonings, Snake Bites, Cat Fight Injuries -- it's rough out there!
Eggs Benedict (the cat who I don't shut up about recently) is an ex-stray we adopted who has just had the hardest go of it. Fungal lung infection, 3 strands of cat-scratch fever, potentially hit by a car, potentially burst ear drums, worms, fleas and stomatitis so bad he had to have every tooth pulled. This is a reality for outdoor cats. If you love them, keep them indoors.

Man but the notes on that post really are just tumblr showing they have no idea how anything works.
"report to your local animal abuse people not to cops" local animal abuse people would be animal control. Animal control officers are cops.
"rabies is treatable if you go to the doctor right after the bite" rabies is PREVENTABLE, not treatable. There is no cure for rabies. If you suspect you came into contact with a rabid animal, you need to get a series of rabies vaccinations to prevent the virus from taking over your body. This is not a treatment and it only works if you go right away. If you show any symptoms of rabies it is too late.
"rabies is fatal in animals but treatable in humans" rabies has a 100% fatality rate and is not considered a survivable disease at this point in time. If you contract rabies YOU WILL DIE. The "treatment" in humans is called the Milwaukee Protocol, only 14% of people survive it, and it leaves you with massive brain damage and effectively turns you into a vegetable. You do not return to a normal life afterwards. Very few people who have undergone this process are capable of doing more than laying in a hospital bed and eating and breathing through tubes. To my knowledge only one person was able to live a semi-normal life after years and years of ongoing therapy and was not expected to have made it even through her first year after treatment.
I cannot stress enough how rabies is unlike any other disease you may be thinking of. It's required on a federal level in this country to vaccinate pretty much any domestic animal that comes into contact with wildlife for one reason and one reason only: it is not considered possible to cure rabies and the spread of disease would threaten all mammalian life including our own if allowed to continue to propagate.

Colonialism is an ongoing problem in the purebred dog world and i just wanna take as second to talk about the national dog breed of Israel, the Canaan dog. Because here's the CKC's blurb on them
I have no doubt and am not denying ancient Hebrews lived with these dogs, but the Canaan comes from a stock of landrace breed native across the Levant and it has also gone by names such as Bedouin Sheepdog or Palestinian Pariah Dog.
Organized breeding of the Canaan began in the 20th century from captured Palestinian dogs (i would also point to the wording of 'redomesticating' used here, implying the feral pariah dogs were in some way not domesticated, which i think is disingenuous phrasing.). If you look up the Canaan, most sources you see on them explicitly brand Canaans as an Israeli breed, neglecting or downplaying any history they have with any of the other countless peoples or cultures in the region this breed has coexisted with across millenia. There's even an archeological site with ancient remains of canaan-like dogs was found in Ashkelon, located just 13 miles from the Gaza strip.
The developer of the 'modern' purebred Canaan was "ardent zionist" Rudolphina Menzel, who trained attack dogs for the IDF:
What really gets me about this story is how this native landrace breed was taken and trained to guard colonial settlements from the very people they lived alongside, there is something so twisted about it..
This is unfortunately nothing new in the world of dog fancy. There are many instances of explorers and settlers importing exotic new dogs from their travels, establishing a breed club, and then claiming stewardship over said breed without any involvement from the local peoples they took or bought them from. I'm not sure what to leave this on, i just think more people should be aware of these 'softer' forms of colonialism and how domestic animals can play a part in colonialism and nationalist narratives.
Anyway, long live the Palestinian pariah dog/ Bedouin sheepdog!
