I did that Princess "Peach" Toadstool sprite redraw thing everyone was doing a while back. And I redesigned her friends too.

I tried to give the art my own personality more than duplicate the modern designs, but I did try to incorporate aspects of their modern designs while keeping the pixel and color limtations.

I changed the mushroom retainer the most. Are they a girl now or just androgynous? I don't know! I wanted it to be clear Peach's subjects are the same species as her. They're shrugging 'cause the princess is in another castle.

I gave Toad and Peach their color schemes from SMB2. I imagine the Mushroom retainers could be different colors for each level, though? There are 7 of them, so that could be every color of the rainbow.

I imagine the short and tall versions of Mario and Luigi are just visual shorthand for their life meter and their "real" heights are somewhere in-between the two.

The goomba's original sprite is pretty much perfect, but I tried to do something new anyway because I didn't want to be lazy.

I didn't want to give Bowser hair because he's a reptile, but I gave him spikes that give him the feel of hair.

the whole point of a zine is that it's cheap to produce, amateur and homemade. if you're being asked to apply to participate in a print project, it is not a zine. if the final product is being printed and bound professionally, it is not a zine. if you are being asked to enter into any kind of licensing agreement more complex than "my work can be reproduced as part of this publication" it is not a zine. nine times put of ten if the final product costs more than $5 you have left zine country. im so serious about this.
