What do you think of the hate Zuko receives for breaking up with Mai over a letter? Do you think it’s fair?

Hello anon!

I honestly think that it is unfair. I totally understand Mai being upset that Zuko broke up with her over a letter. But, people forget that it wasn’t a normal situation. Zuko wasn’t just breaking up with her. He was going to commit treason by leaving to join the avatar. As far as Zuko knew, Mai had never expressed any discomfort with the war that the Fire Nation was waging on the rest of the world. And she was also still friends with his sister, Azula, who surely would not be okay with what Zuko was doing.

Zuko also obviously never told her of what he went through as a fugitive and how his experiences changed his views on the war. How could he? He had to pretend to be the perfect crown prince in order to date Mai, a Fire Nation noblewoman. So as far as Zuko knew, Mai was completely loyal to the Fire Nation.

So how could he trust Mai with the fact that he was going to commit treason? How could he be sure that Mai wouldn’t try to convince him to stay, therefore robbing him of precious time needed to escape, or worse, report him to Azula? He had absolutely no idea how Mai was going to react. And he couldn’t afford to hope that Mai would just let him go, which I don’t think was likely, given by how she reacted to him in the Boiling Rock.

I think what Zuko did was very smart. It is unfortunate that it hurt Mai, but it was the best way to be able to both execute his escape plan without difficulties and to protect Mai. Mai not knowing about the fact that her boyfriend was a traitor before he left would prevent her from being branded a traitor as well by default. If Mai had been discovered to have known that Zuko would defect, she could have been blamed and punished.

So anon, I don’t agree with the hate Zuko receives for that. People act like it is the equivalent of someone breaking up with another person through texting, when it really isn’t the same. Zuko was not just ending his relationship with her, he was literally going to commit treason. It’s an entirely different situation.
