I have a theory that probably isn't new,but I think that Galinda probably had a very lonely childhood and may not have actually been popular until like 8th-10th grade. She was obviously doted on and surrounded by yes-men from an early age,but I think she empathized with elphie from the beginning. I also think she was scared to express that for fear of losing the image she had so carefully crafted. She feels all this "loathing" as well as love towards Elphaba because she sees everything she still could be if she were braver...unfortunately this also includes becoming a pariah. Mind you,she does make wisecracks about elphie being green but they both enjoyed their little spat in history class. That Ozdust dance scene really seems to drive it home with how she joined Elphaba's dance. Okay, that might have been out of remorse for setting her up like that, but the comforting???? The wiping her tears and the embrace???? Ignoring her toxic ass friends trying to get her to stop when she's usually all about image???? Her doing the most to secure her date and position of love interest with fiyero only to ditch him entirely to run off with Elphie????
And THEN we get the Popular sequence. It's not just a flirty or silly little number (it is those things but it's more than that). Popularity has helped her rise up the social ladder despite a lack (at the time) of talent. Her ambition to become a sorceress is altruistic if also self-serving. She wants to actually DO and BE good and feel like the adoration she seems to acquire so easily has been earned. She tries to help Elphaba become popular because Elphaba IS good and has so much talent. BUT Elphaba lacks social skills and isn't conventionally attractive. Elphaba gave her a leg up towards her goals by not only insisting Galinda be in the seminar as well but also THREATENING TO QUIT THAT INSTANT if morrible didn't include her and give her the training wand. They both spend the rest of act 1 bar like a couple of scenes helping each other advance until they have to part ways inevitably. That's love born of empathy and understanding. The "galindafying" was her protecting Elphaba and literally the best gift she was able to give in return

Y'all really fall for that "man spews shallow feminist talking points to distract from glaring concerns about how he actually treats women, such as numerous women in his professional orbit cutting ties with him" every damn time

Everyone who says Galinda should've gone with Elphaba needs to remember that 1; Elphaba never actually accomplishes much as a revolutionary, and Galinda becomes interim leader of Oz at the end of Musical canon (and maybe movie canon) so she'll have more chance to do Good in Oz and reverse the Wizard's terrible laws than Elphaba ever did. It really is all about Popular
2; she would've made a TERRIBLE fugitive. She wouldn't have lasted a day in hiding, especially if they had to do it in disguise, in the wilderness, or away from society in general. Which is exactly what Elphaba had to do.

[professor G(a)linda au]
“Always off topic, easy class to pass. Somehow still learned. Only talks about her wife??? 5/5 would recommend.”
I imagine this as Gelphie being secret wives who teach at the same university. They have very different teaching styles and public rivalry. HOWEVER Glinda always talks about her wife (while openly beefing with prof. Thropp) and Elphaba never talks about family but her classroom is covered in pink poppies on valentine’s day and anniversaries and ppl see her wearing a ring.
No one knows..
[professor!elphaba au]
students who take dr. elphaba thropp’s class are like “this was the hardest class i’ve ever taken. she made me cry multiple times. best teacher i’ve ever had. 5/5 highly recommended”

I completely get this, but I do think that skinny people can be body shamed. I’m 5 foot tall, 90lbs, pretty frail, and have a similar body shape as her. Because of this, I have received extremely disgusting comments regarding my weight, size, and figure. I do not have an ED, but, the comments did cause me to overeat to the point of sickness in attempt to gain weight. I know that plus sized people get more hate, but the rhetoric that thin people don’t is harmful too. While yes, no one should push eating disorders. Ariana Grande, and many other thin celebrities, may not be. She honestly might just be a small person. Comments about her size are harmful. Not just to her, but to others who have a similar body type. The narrative that thin is always an effect of ED or that frail is actually abnormal can be detrimental. Unfortunately, many modern body positive campaigns don’t see the ultra-skinny as a healthy or natural body. I’m not saying everyone should be my size, but it’s not right to assume EDs either.
Anyone can be shamed. Even if you’re thin. The idea that thin people are confident or don’t have insecurities or don’t get hate is simply false. Thin people can be marginalized.
Ariana Grande trying to frame people's discussion of how potentially dangerous to young people her celebrity thinness is as "body shaming" infuriates me!!!!!!!! it's absolutely fucking crazy to me that anti-bodyshaming rhetoric originally centred fat people, folks with disabilities, POC, and sex workers because they were marginalised bodies that were and are SHAMED!!. but it's been so co-opted to the point that rake thin celebrities are using it to avoid accountability for promoting ED-adjacent beauty standards. we live in hell!!! And besides, "Don't talk about people's bodies" is great general advice for a lot of situations, but it doesn't apply when you're talking about harm!!! When young people start harming themselves and doing permanent damage to their bodies through starvation and malnutrition because everyone said it was okay for Ariana Grande to look that way, are you all gonna congratulate yourselves for "not commenting"???
