Beast Boy’s charter is so underrated. I mean just think of all he has been through; the death of his parents, leaving the only family he really had because of his adopted fathers disapproval, creating a new family, falling in love only to be betrayed painfully and watching that same love loose herself completely.

He’s jokes, his funny faces, all cover up what is really inside. And what really is inside is something broken, something dark and scary and no one can see it.

That is the greatest tragedy of all.

I will always ship ShikaIno

BUT I have recently come to terms ever so slightly with ShikaTema as I was semi rereading the series and I no longer see it as something that came out of nowhere. HOWEVER I still believe Ino’s development got shunted BIGTIME and that her ending up with Sai was a cop-out.  I would have rather seen her with ANY of the Konoha 11.  Kiba, Shino, Chouji, Lee, even Gaara.  I will just never see Sai as being right for my precious little angel.

Reasons why

I ship BBRae 

I ship them because they both have a lot of growing up to do, because they are both just kids coming into something where, for once, they are accepted for who they are and not for what they aren’t.

I ship them because they are both misunderstood and try to hide beneath complex layers that don’t define who they really are; because, ultimately, they are both scared of what others will think of them.

I ship them because, together, they go through some rough patches and difficult revelations that lead them to learn more about one another and, in turn, themselves. Which is what a relationship is actually like. It’s a learning process; you’re never going to fit like two pieces of a puzzle, you’re never going to always get along or not annoy each other. The key thing is whether you learn from it, and how you proceed from there.

Beast Boy and Raven proceed; from strangers, they become friends and trusted comrades. They bridge the gap that is their differences and take away something positive from it. They don’t change for one another; instead, they accept each other for who the other is. It gives them depth, as characters. 

I ship them because, no matter how bad or ugly things get, they can always count on one another. They prioritize each other, usually over themselves. They don’t sugarcoat things just because the other doesn’t want to hear it; they teach each other, and they say the harder things that need to be said.

Relationships aren’t only about having things in common; they’re about differences, too. There is more to gain from something that is unusual, a different perspective than similarities alone. That is not to say that they are too different to have no common ground.

They both struggle with acceptance, they both have their own ways that they cope with what it is that makes them different from ‘normal’ people (BB maintains a false bravado while Raven denies her own emotions). They both deal with an uncontrollable side of them that they are terrified of. They both frequently lose faith in themselves, they both see themselves as unlovable when they’ve been hurt or led astray. They both readily take on the blame, but they both try so damn hard to be good. 

They also complement each other.

I ship them because Raven is closed off and shuttered and scared and Beast Boy helps bring her out of her shell, in his own ways. He makes her laugh, she thinks he’s funny (has said so twice), he incites feelings from her that she otherwise wouldn’t ever dare indulge in.

He is the optimism to her negativity; that when things look dire, he’s always on her side, fighting. He believes in her, but he doesn’t need to say it (lucky penny, fight against Trigon, standing next to her to defeat her father, celebrating her birthday because he genuinely loves that she’s around). 

I ship them because he needs someone like her to reign him in, to give him confidence when he’s at his lowest (Beast Within). She berates him and calls him out when he’s being obnoxious or insensitive, teaching him to think before he speaks.

But I also ship them for the little moments their relationship resides in. 

He worries about her when she locks herself away in her room for longer than normal. He notices when she’s not herself, so he looks into it and discovers her birthday. He is angry whenever she’s in danger, and unleashes the very thing within him he’s most terrified of, to help her. No matter how hard she tries to push him away, he never gives up on her, and never wants her to feel alone or left out, even if it means being shut down time and time again.

She knows how sensitive he is; how fragile his emotions are, she’s protective of him when it comes to matters of the heart. She knows he wears his heart on his sleeve, and she won’t let anyone take advantage of that. She always wants what is best for him and will actively pursue the fact that he gets to make his own decisions.  

I ship BBRae for reasons others might disagree with, and it’s fine if they find it unhealthy for it’s poor attempt at slapstick humor, but I’m able to look past that and see what the creators truly intended between these two characters. It’s not pretty, it’s not perfect, but it’s real and I truly believe, that given enough time, they would only continue to grow closer and, in turn, have the potential to become better together.
