Finally watched the playthrough of Sonic Frontiers, and it was pretty alright.

One thing that struck me though was Sonic felt like a young adult. Which is probably compounded by the fact that every other character feels like they're growing up and moving on with life.

I've personally always headcannoned that Sonic was 12 and Tails was 5 when they met. And so, since there are no longer any official ages and I can do what I want, it wraps it up really neatly to think of Sonic as 19 in Frontiers with a newly 12 year old Tails ready to go off on his own adventure.

What made you change Shadow into a good dad?

It took me a hot minute to figure out what you were talking about, lol.

I'm guessing you mean the Sonadow fankid thing I mentioned a few months back? Yeah that's an entirely different au where they both suck at the whole parenting thing. Although I guess, if you squint, you could say Boom Silver was born from it.

They each explore different concepts. Boom Silver is more about atypical families and exploring parenthood in an inherently absurd world. It's a mix of comedy and drama but doesn't really get too deep into the latter since the Boom universe is unserious by nature. Also, Sonadow doesn't exist there.

The unnamed Sonadow fankids au was more of Sonadow relationship (but if they sucked together with lowkey unrequited love), throw in some undiscovered aroaceness mixed with unexplored biases formed from societal expectations (personal nightmare of mine), add half a cup of children in there, mix it into a metal bowl, and stick it in the microwave to see what happens.

You know now I'm a little glad httyd 3 at least gave me experience in dealing with bad canon decisions before the live action remake came out.

Has Shadow ever given coffee to baby Silver?

Aside from the fact even Shadow knows that babies should not be given caffeine, coffee is the last thing he would ever want to give Silver at any point in his life. Dude had literally never slept less in his life than when Silver was a baby.

But Silver has snuck a coffee bean from his dad's mug before. He hated it. Thankfully.

Silver joined a children soccer team.

It went poorly, but not because Shadow threatened the coach or Omega threatened to blow up the opponent squad, but because Rouge went full Soccer Mom and beat up another parent when they made a very rude comment about Sonic and Shadow’s complicated relationship.

I need you to know that this ask spurred me to sketch out a 20 panel comic + give a character with a single appearance a larger role, an entire family, and a rivalry + made me give two characters a more positive relationship than I first intended + expanded on a friendship that forms later in the au

When I was watching the Sonic and the Black Knight gameplay for some reason I thought that the dragon would be modelled after Black Doom (probably because of the horns even though in hindsight him just straight up being the actual devil would've made more sense) and I am still sorely disappointed.

Mostly because I wanted Lancelot to be part dragon.

Shadow realizes that fatherhood severely impacted his edginess and he has a crisis.

Rouge and Omega meanwhile have to handle their friend’s destructive mid-life crisis

Wait, lowkey this would fit in really well. Cause Shadow has gone from roughing it in a cave and (mostly) only looking out for himself to living in a house with a child and a developing friendship(???) with two other people who are being a lot more helpful and supportive than he expected when he initially arrived.

Silver calls Shadow "dada" for the first time and it's like being drenched with a bucket of ice water. It hits him hard how much his life has changed. Which stirs up all kinds of complicated feelings about, well, everything.

He feels weak for accepting and continuing to accept help from Rouge and Omega. He feels ashamed for overstaying his welcome in Rouge's house and mooching off of her generosity. Wait... is he taking advantage of her?? It's difficult for him to imagine that anyone would genuinely want to be friends with him. He's aware he's not personable by any means. Most people were afraid of him. It would make sense (to him) that Rouge just wasn't comfortable telling him to leave. Or maybe she just enjoyed Silver's presence but not his own.

And he's angry at himself that despite that he doesn't want to leave. He enjoys this new life, which makes him feel worse, which makes him angrier. He's the Ultimate Lifeform for Christ's sake, he shouldn't be so easily domesticated.

And Silver... well... to be honest he hadn't thought too deeply about his feelings on Silver until then. The kid was originally just a job he was doing out of a mix of obligation, spite, and pride. Which is selfish and kinda messed up in hindsight cause he's pretty sure parents are meant to love their kids automatically. Does he love Silver? Ooo, lots of weird feelings there, gonna shove that down to examine later (i.e. hopefully never).

Shadow starts acting weird for a few days as he stews in his complex feelings and self-loathing then makes the genius decision of disappearing off the face of the earth. Panic, of course, ensues in the Dark house as Rouge and Omega try to balance taking care of Silver (who is inconsolable) with trying to find Shadow. They can't. They look everywhere, his cave, the canyon, Sonic. Hell, they even check Eggman's lab.

I'm not fully sure what Shadow is doing in this time period to try to get his head on straight but he reappears an unspecified amount of time later to request to take Silver (cause in hindsight-that-really-shouldn't-be-hindsight-since-the-exact-same-thing-happened-to-him he probably shouldn't assume they'd be okay with him dumping a whole child on them like that) and they're so relieved he's okay... because now they can kill him.

Que a fight against Rouge and Omega where they're furious at him for scaring all of them and coming back only to leave again with Silver and not a word to either of them. Meanwhile Shadow is confused, realizing he may have been a bit presumptuous in this situation, and also having some weird warm feelings that they care about him... at least he thinks they do, it's hard to tell when Omega tried to empty a round of bullets into him.

Shadow: Wait, so you don't hate me?

Rouge *while trying to curb stomp him*: No, you stupid fucking hedgehog, we were worried sick about you!

Long story short, the fight concludes and Shadow realizes he's being an idiot and was miserable on his own (even if there are lingering doubts and feelings of being weak). Shadow reunites with Silver and maybe isn't fully sure if these feelings he has towards Silver are love, but he will continue to be there for him in the meantime.

All is well and there are most certainly no lingering effects on Silver's young, developing brain from having his primary caretaker disappear and his secondary caretakers in obvious states of distress in the meantime. Nope.

(Also I imagine Sonic is Shadow's main physical outlet, otherwise he mostly engages in self-destructive behaviors, like prolonged self-isolation in this case. He didn't engage Sonic like he usually does when he feels like shit which probably made his mental state worse as all that excess energy and anger goes right back into his brain.)

The fact that mister grumpy edgy live in a cave Shadow managed to become a responsible adult is scary.

You would think that Sonic is the one more responsible since he raised Tails but definitively not Shadow.

Especially since his friends are a jewel thief and a walking weapon of mass destruction with a severe destruction obsession.

It's even funnier since Shads was not friends with Rouge or Omega when Silver was born. Rouge just happened to be the only person he had a semi-positive relationship with at the time and owed him a favor.

She offered him her couch for a few days but, like a stray cat, he just didn't leave and that was that.

Tbh I always imagined Sonic and Tails sort of raised each other. Tails is younger, yes, but he's a super genius and could presumably take care of himself. He was a lot more physically independent than a regular 8 year old. Tails also plans and thinks through things more than Sonic does which probably saved his life a few times. Tails was not like a regular 8 year old or a baby.

Also there were two very different things going on in Sonic's head when he chose to take Tails under his wing vs when Silver popped out of him one random night.
