HELLOOOOOO I HAVE RETURNED FOR MORE CHAOS AND SHENANIGANS! Now you get to see what happened to Sofii! It may or may not have something to do with my new OC hehe >:D
Enjoy! :3
Spirits of the Wasteland
Finn and his friends had been searching for Sofii for almost 20 minutes. They had no idea where she had gone, or why she had disappeared at all. It wasn’t like her to go off on her own, especially in Wasteland. Everyone knew she was scared of the realm. Even Treasure Reef, which was considerably more sunny, scared her. It just didn’t make sense. They had scoured the whole graveyard and the first area with the krill, and there was no sign of her.
“Maybe we should check the battlefield,” Rye suggested. Finn nodded, wondering why she would go there. He looked at Theo and Raylah, who were talking in hushed voices in a corner. Out of everyone in the group, they obviously knew Sofii best, so maybe she had told them something—that’s right, Theo had said she heard voices in Wasteland! It must have something to do with that, Finn thought. What else could it be? With that in mind, he strode up to Ray and Theo to find out what was going on. “Hey, mind filling me in?”
Ray turned her head in Finn’s direction, then shot a worried glance back at Theo. She seemed hesitant to say something. Theo nodded, a silent signal that she could tell Finn, an equally worried expression on his face. “Theo told you that Sofii sometimes hears voices here, right?”
“Yeah, he mentioned it earlier. Do you think that’s why she wandered off?”
Ray started fidgeting with her hands before continuing. “I think so. It’s the only reason I can think of.”
Finn took Ray’s hand, trying his best to reassure her in her nervous state. “Wanna go check the battlefield?”
She smiled, hoping they would find Sofii soon. “Sure.”
While everyone else went to Treasure Reef to check for Fii, Finn and Raylah went to the battlefield in front of the temple. It was a sad place, just like every other area in Wasteland, but the feeling every Child got upon entering was heavier than it was in the other areas. Whether it was a silent warning that danger was near, or a reminder of the lives lost long ago, no one knew, but it hurt them all the same. Finn and Raylah both felt it as they trudged over the sand dunes and made their way towards the entrance. Every now and then, they’d see a broken shield lying in the sand, or a spear sticking up toward the cloud filled sky, but no Sofii. “Ugh, where could she be?”
Raylah was growing more stressed by the second. Just like Finn, she knew it wasn’t like Fii to just wander off on her own. So there had to be a reason why she had seemingly disappeared. But she wasn’t here, all Ray could see was barricades and broken shields and—a deer mask? No, a Child wearing a deer mask, hiding behind a column. Now, that was creepy. Raylah nudged Finn, then motioned to the hiding Child. A flash of recognition crossed Finn’s face, and he waved to the Child! “Rowan! Raylah and I are looking for a friend who may have wandered off on her own. Could you help us?”
The Child, Rowan, came out of his hiding place and walked over to Finn and Raylah. Ray gave Finn a questioning look, but he only smiled and winked. “A friend? Does she wear flowers in her hair?”
“Yes, and an outfit similar to yours, but with a darker cape. Have you seen her?”
Rowan nodded, his head turned in the direction Finn and Raylah had come from. “I found her wandering the dunes talking to herself—or maybe she was talking to someone. I’m not really sure. In any case, I took her to Treasure Reef and told her to wait there.”
Finn could feel it the moment Ray’s sanity broke. She lunged forward to tackle Rowan, not caring about the repercussions or who saw her. She had just about had it with her best friend’s absence, and taking her to one of her least favorite places to wait was the final straw. Finn actually struggled to keep her from getting at Rowan, who only stared in curiosity. “Is she alright?”
Finn kept his arms around Raylah’s waist, wondering how so much energy could be packed into someone so tiny. “Yeah, Ray’s fine. I just gotta get her out of here. See you at the dye shop later?”
“Sure. Good luck finding your friend.”
Good luck finding her? Wait a minute—Rowan was pranking them! He must have found Sofii wandering off and decided to intervene. Finn shot a scathing glare at Rowan, and he could have sworn he heard him laugh as he and Ray flew away.
“So he’s a psychopath?”
Finn grimaced. While Rowan was fun to be around, he was also a menace. He liked playing pranks, but some of them were borderline dangerous. This was definitely one of those pranks. “Yeah, pretty much. He likes pranks, but not everyone likes his pranks.”
Raylah nodded, wondering what would prompt someone to do such a thing. Pranks were fun up to a certain point. This prank was giving her a heart attack every five minutes. “Well, at least now we know where she is. Hopefully the others found her already.”
“Yeah…about that…”
Ray looked at Finn with a wide eyed glare. “What?”
“Rowan probably put her somewhere difficult to find.”
Raylah groaned. “I wish you had let me tackle him.”
Finn smirked. “If I had, you would have knocked him out.”
“That’s the point.”
Finn shook his head, wondering not for the first time how he managed to fall for this girl. They boarded the boat to the reef, then started looking for Sofii and the others once they arrived. Everyone except Sofii was at the top of the lighthouse on the right side of the reef, so they flew up, hoping they had some idea of where she was. “I’m just saying, I don’t think she would go all the way down there. She hates deep water.”
Finn could hear Theo attempting to explain Sofii’s fear of deep water, but Rye and Kace were too busy arguing about something else. “There’s no crabs here, Kace. I’ve literally never seen any.”
“Yes there are! Down by the ruins and the gazebo—“
“What are you dinguses arguing about?”
They both stopped arguing at the sound of Finn’s voice. Teri stood by the edge, surveying the area for clues. “Just…crabs. Did you and Ray find anything?”
“We found Rowan. Turns out he found Fii wandering around talking to herself and brought her here to the reef. The only problem is that he likes playing dangerous pranks, so he most likely put her somewhere difficult for us to find.”
If Raylah had wanted to tackle and knock out Rowan before, Theo looked like he wanted to maim Rowan. He looked at the water below, and dove down, presumably to find Sofii. A few minutes later, he shot out of the water with her in his arms.
“She was floating by a kelp plant,” he said as Raylah ran up and started checking for injuries.
“Guys, I’m fine. Rowan was playing a bad prank, sure, but I’m not hurt.”
If Finn could take a picture of the look on Theo’s face, he would. The poor guy’s hair was sticking to his forehead from the water, and his goggles were lopsided. On top of all that, he looked ready to murder Rowan.
“Why did you even wander off in the first place?” Teri asked. Sofii looked around sheepishly, but she knew there was no avoiding it.
“I heard someone calling for help, and followed the sound to the battlefield, but I couldn’t find anyone. I think it was a spirit. But then Rowan found me, brought me here, and told me to wait. I think I was there for almost an hour. But I was floating by the kelp, so I didn’t run out of Light!”
Theo grimaced, inwardly cursing himself for not keeping a closer eye on Sofii. “We were really worried, Fii. Try not to wander off again, okay?”
Sofii nodded, then gave Theo a hug.
“By the way, I did see one crab down there,” Theo said with a smirk.
“AHA! I told you!” Kace jumped up and pointed a finger at Rye, who stuck his tongue out in response.
“Well, it wasn’t exactly where you thought it was, Kay,” Theo told him. “It was underwater, not on land by the gazebo.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kace replied. With a mischievous look on his face, he sauntered up to Theo and pushed him off the lighthouse.
“KACE I SWEAR ON EDEN I WILL GET YOU!”
“Good luck flying back up without an assist, CAPTAIN!”
Finn rolled his eyes at Kace’s shenanigans, then looked at Raylah. “Hey, you did good today, considering you almost tackled a guy.”
She snorted, amused at her behavior. “At least you were there to hold me back.”
Finn nodded, and Raylah could see the glint in his eye as he watched Kace taunt Theo from the other end of the lighthouse. She figured out what he was about to do just as he took her hand and dropped her over the side. “FINN—“
Finn looked at Teri and shrugged, and Teri burst out laughing as Raylah now struggled to get back up. They both walked over to the edge to watch Ray, and as Finn sat there, he couldn’t think of anything he’d rather spend his time doing.
YAAAAAAY THEY FOUND SOFII! Rowan is an absolute menace, but he’s silly, so it’s okay >:3
I hope you enjoyed this one! I had so much fun writing it, between Finn and Ray’s banter and everyone worrying over where Fii was, it was great.

HELLOOOO I’m in the mood for a Finn exclusive story cuz I wanna delve into his past with Resh hehe
I honestly have no idea how to start this, but I hope you guys enjoy :3
The Boy and His King
It was silent. The Cave of Prophecies was usually a bustling place filled with mentors and their students, but tonight it was as silent as a temple. Finn sat in front of the elemental pillar, staring up at the glowing symbols on it. He could feel the energy of each one, calling a name that he couldn’t hear. He only knew that it was not his name they were calling. Even though he had yet to do the trials, he knew that it was not meant to be him.
“Is that you, my friend?”
Finn smiled at the sound of his friend’s voice.
“Hey, Lef.”
When Alef sat down, Finn could immediately tell by the look on his face that he knew something was wrong.
“Are you worried about the trials, Finn?”
Finn sighed. Alef could always tell when something was wrong. Finn wondered for a moment if it had something to do with the fact that he fell from the stars.
“Me? Worried? You must be mistaking me for someone else.”
Alef smiled at his friend’s bravado. Finn always liked to portray confidence, and while he was confident in his abilities, he often worried about how others saw him. Being such close friends with him made it easy for Alef to see that.
“Whether you complete the trials or not, it won’t matter what the prophet or any of the mentors think of you, because you’re my best friend, and you’re amazing at lots of other things.”
Finn smiled, a genuine one this time, at his friend’s words. Lef always knew what to say. He was a wonderful friend, and Finn felt confident he would complete the trials. Little did he know that the next day, everything would change.
>>><<<
Finn awoke to the sound of the prophet’s drum, as he did every morning. He, Alef, and the rest of the students left their rooms, the feeling of anticipation high. Everyone except for Finn and Alef had attempted the trials. Today, they would find out who would complete them. Everyone ate their breakfast in a hurry, eager to find out who would go first. Then they lined up in front of the elemental pillar, patiently waiting for the prophet to announce it. Then the sound of his drum stopped, and his footsteps echoed as he made his way into the heart of the cave. “Good morning, students. Today, there are only two of you left who have not attempted the trials.”
He paused for a moment as his gaze swept over the young faces in front of him. Some of them were practically bouncing on their toes, their eyes wide with anticipation. “Finn. You shall go first.”
Finn stepped forward and bowed to the prophet, ready for the challenges that would surely come his way. “I am ready.”
He entered the first door, the entrance to the Water Trial, which tested one’s patience. Well, I certainly have plenty of that, Finn thought. Once he analyzed his surroundings, he was able to move when the water was low and time his jumps so that he didn’t touch it when he arrived at the next checkpoint. The next trial was the Earth Trial, which tested one’s resilience. As a boy fairly experienced in fighting, he was resilient and was able to pass the trial without any problems. The third trial was the Air Trial, which tested one’s balance. The strong gusts of air caught Finn off guard, but he knew he could use them to his advantage. He moved carefully, minding his every step and making sure he did not fall. As he got closer to the top, he wondered if he might actually complete all four trials—but then another wind gust caught him off guard. He fell off the ledge he’d been standing on, down into the dark abyss below—but he was not scared. Finn knew this could only be because he wasn’t meant to complete the trials. Which meant it had to be Alef.
Alef completed the first two trials in half the time it took Finn to complete one. It was unbelievable. He was quick and agile, but careful of his footing and when he made his move. Finn smiled the whole time, he felt so proud of his friend. Before he knew it, Alef had completed the last trial, and all the other students were cheering for him as the prophet and mentors bowed their heads in reverence. Now that Alef had completed the trials and proved himself worthy, he would become king of Sky! Finn knew he would be a wonderful king, one who ruled with all the virtues of the ancient trials. A patient, resilient, balanced, and courageous ruler.
>>><<<
The next several years passed in a blur. Upon becoming king, Alef changed his name to Resh, and declared it to the kingdom during his coronation. Finn had never seen such a long celebration. The kingdom reveled long into the night, and began again in the early hours of the morning. On one such morning, Finn was sitting on the beach on Sanctuary Island when someone from the royal palace walked up to him. Finn stared up at the man with a curious expression. “The king requests your presence immediately in the palace. He also asked me to add that he misses you very much.”
Finn smiled at the thought of his friend missing him. He hadn’t visited the palace since the coronation, and he didn’t want to bother Resh since he was probably busy meeting with the Elders and doing all sorts of kingly things. But if he wanted Finn there immediately, then that meant he wasn’t busy! “Thank you for telling me. I’ll head up to the palace at once!”
Before he could forget, Finn gave the man a few candles for his trouble, then he flew out of Sanctuary and straight to the royal palace!
The palace was still as huge and wondrous as Finn remembered it from his short time there during the coronation. Everything was so detailed—from the giant columns to the table legs, it was all so perfect and ornate. It was definitely the sort of thing Alef—Resh would appreciate. “FINN!”
One second Finn was admiring a detailed painting of Resh on his throne, and the next Resh was on the verge of tackling him to the floor with a hug!
“Lef, you’re gonna break my arms,” Finn said, laughing. Resh put him down and smiled at the old nickname. He laughed when Finn started to dramatically examine his royal outfit. “Do you like it?”
Finn nodded enthusiastically. He stared at the silver detailing on Resh’s coat, mesmerized by the way it shone in the sunlight. “Did you have someone make it for you?”
Resh shook his head with a proud look on his face. “I made it myself! I wanted to have plenty of royal outfits, so I made a few different ones.”
Finn was impressed. He and Lef had both learned how to sew from their mentors in the Cave of Prophecies, but Finn had never expected his friend to make his own royal clothing with the skill. “That’s awesome, Lef! It looks really well made. By the way, what did you summon me here for?”
Lef smiled that secret smile of his, the one Finn knew as his “I know something you don’t know” face.
“Lef..? What is it?”
The young king was so excited, he started jumping up and down, and his words came out in a jumble! “I want you to be my royal advisor, Finn!”
Of all the reasons Finn thought his friend had invited him to the palace, this was the least expected one. In fact, it had never occurred to him that Lef would want him as his advisor! “Wait…seriously? You want me as your advisor?”
Lef gave his friend an incredulous look. “Of course I do! You’re smart, and having you here would make everything more fun!”
Finn laughed at his friend’s response. Despite becoming king, Lef was still the same energetic boy that Finn knew and loved. “Sooooo, will you do me the honor of becoming my royal advisor, Finn?”
Finn smiled and bowed. “Of course, Lef! I’d love to.”
Resh couldn’t think of anyone he’d rather spend his time with.
<<<>>>
Finn couldn’t think of anyone he’d rather get away from. Since finding the strange new crystals, his friend had become…different. He no longer laughed at Finn’s jokes, he no longer took a break from his work to watch the sunset with Finn. He was so consumed with his work on the dark crystals, he stopped spending time with Finn altogether—unless he needed his help with one of his many “projects.”
Finn wished he had never suggested that they use the crystals. He had thought they would help the kingdom, and Resh had praised him when he came up with the idea. But there was something wrong with the crystals. He should have seen it before, when all they were doing was harvesting the crystals from Treasure Reef. But now, months later, the time spent harvesting had taken a toll on the Golden Land. What was once a thriving community was now a wasteland, a place where dark clouds blocked out the light and dark water polluted everything. Finn had asked Tsadi to evacuate the people, and everyone was moved to new homes in the other realms. The people were safe, Finn had made sure of that, but Resh had seemed so cold. As if he didn’t care. And now he was talking about harvesting the Light from the Light Creatures to use it as a power source for the crystals! What had started as an ambition had now become an all consuming fire, leaving nothing but a cold and calculating king in its wake. Finn knew Resh had gone too far, and he was fully convinced he was to blame. After all, wasn’t he the one who suggested they take advantage of the kingdom’s resources? And this was the result. A kingdom on the verge of collapse, all because Finn had inadvertently caused his best friend’s greed. He had to do something before a line was crossed, so he went straight to the throne room. As he walked through the grand halls, he still found himself admiring the palace’s beauty. But the shadows on the walls reminded him that it was not the same place he had first entered all those years ago when Resh had first asked him to be his royal advisor. The throne room was almost as dark as the halls, were it not for the ginormous crystal behind it. Finn tried to ignore the faint hum coming from the crystal as he faced his king. “Your Majesty, may I speak with you for a moment?”
Before Finn had spoken, Resh’s gaze was fixed on the crystal, as if he were in a trance. He turned away from it and looked pointedly at Finn, annoyed at the interruption. “What is it, Finn?”
The king walked up to Finn, and Finn was forced to crane his neck because of how tall Resh had become. It was unnerving. “I wanted to speak with you about the crystals, and your next plan to power them.”
Resh raised his eyebrows. Finn could tell he already knew what this was about. But he had to tell him, no matter what his friend might say. “I think there’s something wrong with the crystals. Now that we’ve taken so many of them, their presence in the kingdom is overwhelming the people. Teth told me that the rain in her realm is becoming harmful, and people are getting sick. Also, the pollution in Tsadi’s realm is doing the same, and it—“
Resh held up a hand to stop Finn. At some point, Finn’s words had started coming out in a jumble, he was so nervous and he wanted Resh to listen. But the look on the king’s face told Finn he wasn’t interested in listening. He braced himself for whatever Resh had to say. “Finn, as much as I appreciate your concern, none of that is my priority right now. I have things to do, and I need your help. None of my projects could get done without you. You know that, don’t you?”
Finn hung his head. Resh was right, half the reason any of his projects got done was because of Finn’s attention to detail and careful planning. Finn found himself bitterly wishing that he wasn’t so careful. “Your work…it’s hurting people, Lef. They’re getting sick, and the Light creatures know something is wrong! They’re trying to migrate someplace safe, because the lands are being polluted and—“
Resh grabbed Finn by the front of his shirt and held him up so he was at eye level. “I don’t think you’re listening properly, Finn. I have other things to worry about, and whatever it is you’re talking about is not on my list. So please, do what you do best and go make sure that everything is in order for the Light Harvest.”
With that, he threw Finn onto the ground and stalked out of the throne room. Finn’s whole body was shaking, and he couldn’t stop the tears as they fell onto the spotless stone floor. His gaze went up to the crystal, the thing Resh called a “feat of modern technology.” It almost seemed to stare back at Finn, taunting him now that it had taken his best friend away from him. “You…you caused this. I may have brought you here, but his obsession with you has made him cruel. HOW DARE YOU!”
Angrily, Finn threw a small side table at the crystal, but of course it did nothing. There wasn’t even a dent. He turned away from it, not wanting to spend another minute alone with it, and left the room with tears still streaming down his face.
<<<>>>
“FINN!”
Finn snapped back to reality, and remembered he was no longer in the palace with Resh and the crystal. He was in Wasteland with Theo, in the shrine where he used to contact Resh. “You okay? You’ve been staring at that spot for a few minutes.”
Finn looked to where Theo was pointing, at the very back of the shrine, where a statue of Resh once stood. He had torn it down, along with every other small statue of him in Wasteland. When Finn blinked, he could have sworn he saw a large crown wearing shadow with bright, gleaming eyes staring down at him and Theo. His heart stopped when he realized they were being watched. “He’s here.”
Theo’s eyes widened, and he took his staff off his back and entered a fighting stance. Finn wordlessly shook his head, telling him that his weapon would be of no use. Theo nodded and put it on his back, but he looked around warily, wondering where the lost king was. “HOW YOU GUYS DOING BACK THERE?”
They both jumped at the sound of Rye’s voice. Finn thought he could hear Rye’s drum and Sofii’s flute. He looked at Theo with a curious expression. “Since when does Fii play her flute in Wasteland?”
Theo looked at his friend sheepishly. “Since she doesn’t like the quiet here. She told me once she hears voices in Wasteland sometimes, so she feels like she needs to block them out.”
Finn nodded, then looked back at the ruined shrine. He didn’t have to blink to see the shadow now. Resh stood in front of them, staring down at them wordlessly. Finn nudged Theo, who looked up in horror at the sight. But he wasn’t scared. He refused to be, not when he knew Finn needed him. He gave a mocking bow to the lost king, then stood up with a smirk on his face. “Hello, Your Majesty. If we could have just a moment of your time, my friend here has something he’d like to say to you.”
Finn snickered, then took a few steps closer to the king. “Respectfully, I don’t think I can work for you anymore. I stopped being your royal advisor a long time ago, so I think it’s best I leave you to do your work without me getting in your way.”
The king only laughed, amused at his friend’s attempt to leave him. “You’re forgetting one thing, Finn. I can still speak with you through the magical connection I created between us. You and your friends will never be rid of me.”
“I thought your ‘magical connection’ was supposed to be your undying friendship,” Theo muttered. Finn gave him a look, but Theo could see he was trying not to laugh.
Finn looked back at the king, amused that Resh had assumed he’d forgotten. “You must have forgotten how determined I am. I’ll find a way to sever it, and my friends will help me.”
Resh groaned, annoyed and, most of all, confused that Finn would even want to leave. “What makes you think that? I could easily strengthen it, and then you’ll have no way of breaking it.”
Finn was done. He would break their connection one way or another. But he needed to make sure his message was clear. “You really don’t get it, do you? I’m quitting, Lef. Resigning. You’re out of pawns.”
Resh laughed again, and Finn’s memory flashed back to a moment when he had pranked him with a bucket of water over a doorway. Even with his soaking wet hair, Alef had laughed. It had sounded so different then. But Finn knew he couldn’t go back to that, and clearly Resh couldn’t either. “Goodbye, Alef.”
He could feel Resh’s anger building as he and Theo walked out of the shrine and back to their friends. “How DARE you walk away from me Finn?! You’re just one Child, what makes you think I couldn’t find another to help me? You’re NOTHING, YOU LITTLE—“
Finn ignored Resh’s enraged yelling as he walked back to his friends, and flipped him off as he left the large archway. Whether Resh’s yelling became louder because of it or not, Finn couldn’t tell because his friends were frantically searching the area, trying to find something—or someone. He did a head count and found Theo, Kace, Ray, Rye, and Teri. But no Sofii. “Where is she?”
Ray turned around from the corner she was checking, and Finn saw the panicked look in her eyes. “I don’t know. One second she was here, and the next she was gone. We don’t know where she went.”
HAHAAAA cliff hanger! I’ll write the next one tomorrow hehe
I hope you enjoyed the Finn lore! :3

HI GUYS HAPPY THURSDAY!! I spent 2 ish hours scrolling on my silly app, started writing, went out to dinner, then finished, so it’s almost 11:00 pm now. ;-;
At least I’m ready to free my children from the basement! ^_^
ENJOY THE CHAOS, FRIENDS
Drama at the Theater
Kace had suggested that they hang out in the Village Theater in Valley. Theo wasn’t sure why, but he thought he had seen an odd look on his friend’s face as he said it.
Now, as he was walking in, he knew EXACTLY why. There was a performance going on, a boy wearing a colorful hat and juggling, and a lanky boy dancing lively across the stage. Kace was sitting in the second row, his gaze fixed on the juggling boy. Raylah and Sofii sat in the second row as well, Sofii’s head lying in Ray’s lap as they both watched the dancer. Finn was sitting next to Kace. As Theo got closer, he saw the smirk on Finn’s face as his gaze switched from him to the juggler. So he definitely knows about Kace’s crush, Theo thought to himself as he sat next to Raylah and moved Sofii’s legs. Ray not so subtly moved Fii’s legs to his lap. Theo whipped his head around so fast, he swore he almost got whiplash. Ray just kept watching the show with the smallest mischievous smile on her face. He would have noticed the blush on Sofii’s face if he hadn’t looked up to see Finn on the verge of laughter as he watched the interaction. Sweet mother of Megabird, they will be the death of me, he thought as he turned his attention back to the show. It was really impressive. The juggler caught his colorful balls with a flourish as the dancer finished with a backflip! They both bowed as Theo and his friends clapped and cheered. But as the juggler took off his hat, he moved his hand along the rim, then pulled out a rose and gracefully handed it to Kace! Theo watched as his friend blushed and thanked the juggler—no, he’s a magician as well!—for the rose. As soon as the two performers took their final bow and the curtains closed, Theo jumped out of his seat and ran over to Kace. “OH MY ELDERS WHAT WAS THAT!!”
Kace smiled as he tucked the rose into his collar—then promptly jumped on Theo’s back. “OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY—“
Finn bonked him on the head with a shovel, but all Kace had to say to that was to stick out his tongue. Finn rolled his eyes, but Theo saw the easy smile on his face. “Want me to introduce you, shorty?”
Kace’s eyes widened. “You KNOW HIM? And you would really do that for me?”
Finn nodded and motioned to the backstage entrance. Kace excitedly hopped off of Theo’s back as he followed Finn backstage. “Theo, I think Ray needs you for something!”
Theo looked at Raylah, who was standing at the other backstage entrance on the other side of the stage. He ran over, wondering where Fii had gone as they walked inside—oh. She was talking to the dancer. She looked excited, talking animatedly about something to the boy. She’s probably just telling him she enjoyed his performance, Theo thought. So why were they standing so close to each other? Did she know him? No, she would have told him—then there was a tap on his shoulder. Raylah gave him a look, the one that said “I know how down bad you are, but please keep it in check for one damn minute.” He shrugged her off as he walked to stand beside Fii. The dancer’s face brightened. “Oh my gosh, you’re Theo! Sofii was just telling me all about you!”
She was doing what now? Stupid Theo, always jumping to conclusions, he thought as he mentally face palmed. He could practically hear Ray’s stifled laughter as he struggled to come up with a coherent response. “Oh, she was? I didn’t know she liked to talk about me so much.”
The boy laughed, clearly amused. Raylah smiled, and Theo could tell she was still trying to stifle her laughter as she walked up to introduce him. “Theo, this is Soko-Rye, the best dancer EVER. Rye, this is Theo. He’s an extremely gifted soldier.”
Theo rolled his eyes and smirked at Ray’s introduction. “Says the girl who knows six different fighting styles.”
He looked to the other side of the room just in time to see Finn’s shocked face. He was staring at Raylah as if she were a three headed krill. Kace was equally shocked, but the juggler/musician smiled proudly. Maybe Rye told him, Theo thought, chuckling at Finn and Kace. “You do know Finn’s gonna pester you about joining the Guardians now, right?”
Ray shrugged, and Rye jokingly nudged her. “She’s a good dancer too, you know.”
If Finn wasn’t shocked before, he definitely was now. His jaw was practically on the floor. Sofii burst out laughing as soon as she saw the look on his face. Kace was now busy talking with the juggler/magician. He’s so excited, Theo thought to himself. He sauntered over to his friend, ready to stir up just a liiiitle bit of trouble. “Soooo, you gonna introduce me to your boyfriend, Kay?”
Kace shrieked and nearly jumped out of his boots. “OH—UHHH, YEAH. Theo, this is Teri. Teri, this is my best friend, Theo.”
Teri excitedly shook Theo’s hand, but his face fell when he realized Theo was death staring him. “Hurt him, and you’re dead, magic boy.”
Teri slowly nodded, a nervous expression on his face. He finally let go of Theo’s hand when Kace grabbed it and led him to a row of levers, presumably to ask what they were for. “Smooth moves, Theo.”
Finn was leaning against a column, smirking. Theo simply smiled, happy for Kace since he was obviously head over heels for this boy. If he liked Teri so much, then Theo was positive he was a good person. “Thanks, I try. Speaking of which, you ever been interested in anyone?”
If Theo wasn’t such an attentive person, he would have missed the quick glance Finn made towards Raylah. Oh ELDERS NO. Absolutely NOT. “Ah…no, not really. Haven’t thought about that sort of thing before.”
Theo did not believe a word of it. Maybe someone more open minded would disagree with him, but Finn did not measure up to the absolute QUEEN that was Raylah. Not even close. If he even wanted a smidge of a chance, he would need to step it up. All of these thoughts must have somehow shown on his face, because Finn was staring at him incredulously. So Theo decided to get right to the point. “No.”
“No? No what? I said I wasn’t—“
“Cut the crap, Finn. You looked at Ray. Don’t pretend you didn’t.”
Finn glared at him, but Theo could see a flicker of something else for a moment. “I don’t know what you think you saw, but I’m not interested in Raylah. And what about you? I’ve seen the way you look at Sofii. What makes you think you’re worthy of a soul so pure?”
How DARE he. How dare he suggest such a thing when he was the one keeping secrets and distancing himself from everyone. Theo saw it everyday, when Finn would laugh at a joke that Kace made or listen to one of Fii’s stories, but then he would withdraw, hide underneath his usual stoic expression. How DARE HE.
“You’re no better, Finn. You’re hiding something, and as far as I can tell, you’re not planning to open up about it and tell us. So why don’t you tell me what in the seven realms MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE WORTHY OF MY BEST FRIEND?”
Theo had started yelling at some point, but he had just barely heard Rye say something about drama to the others. Finn angrily stepped closer to Theo, ready to retort, but Teri stepped between the two before things could escalate. “Alright, look. It’s obvious you two have a few things to hash out. But this is not the way to do it. How about we all go outside and figure this out in a less destructive way?”
Finn huffed angrily, clearly ready for a fight. But he backed down and walked outside. Theo put his staff on his back—he hadn’t even noticed that he had grabbed it. He tried not to think about that as he reluctantly sat down on a bench next to Finn. Teri and Rye sat on a bench in front of them. Great, we have mediators, Theo thought sarcastically. He actually was grateful they were there, though. They seemed sensible enough to help figure this situation out. “Elders, why did I even ask that stupid question?” he muttered.
“You know why,” Finn replied. His voice was all ice and coarse stone. Sofii and Raylah sat on a bench across the aisle, not aware of their own role in the situation. “You already knew.”
It was true. Theo had seen Finn stare at Ray when he thought no one was looking, the way he teased her and bothered her more than the others. He had figured it out early on. Kace had figured it out shortly after, but Theo knew he would never say anything. He didn’t want it to cause problems. Neither did Theo, and yet here they were. “Yeah, I did.”
Theo looked up and saw Rye and Teri staring at them as if they were complete idiots. After deliberating for a minute, he nudged Finn, who looked up and groaned. “Are you guys serious? It’s not like we could have talked about it. This doofus doesn’t trust me.”
Teri smiled, which Theo found odd considering the situation they were attempting to help fix. “Perfect! Why don’t you tell him why you don’t trust him, then we’ll go from there.”
Theo felt like he was in some kind of therapy session. “I…feel like he’s hiding something from me. From us,” he said as he looked at Raylah and Sofii. Rye and Teri looked at Finn, patiently waiting for him to open up. A moment ago, he was completely still, the expression on his face cold and unfeeling. But now he was fidgeting, his eyes darting back and forth as he wondered what he should say. Theo was so shocked to see him like this, he actually jumped in his seat. He studied Finn’s now nervous behavior, and something occurred to him. Maybe he was afraid to say something because he was being prevented from speaking up. But who would do such a thing? “I…I’ve been…”
Theo’s eyes widened. Megabird above, he’s really nervous, he thought. He heard tiny footsteps behind him, then saw Sofii walk up behind Finn and take his hand. The sudden contact startled him, and he looked back at Sofii, who gave him an encouraging smile. Then Finn took a deep breath, and his purple eyes flickered to red as he started to speak. “I’ve been spying on all of you…for King Resh. I’m so sorry. I have no excuse. I can only hope that you’ll forgive me for hiding this from you for so long.”
Finn’s voice broke as he apologized. Theo didn’t know what he had expected, but it certainly wasn’t this. A spy? For KING RESH? This could only mean…well, a lot of things, actually. “Is there…anything else?” Raylah asked.
Finn looked at her with deep regret in his eyes. “I was alive when Resh first completed the trials, before he became King Resh. When he was still Alef. I attempted them as well, but I failed. We became close friends. He made me his advisor once he became king. But once he started harvesting the Dark Crystals, I could already feel him slipping away. He wasn’t himself anymore. It consumed him. The constant need for power, and the—“
Finn looked up at Eden, at the giant crystal behind the ruined palace. It was then that Theo and every other Child there realized just how serious the situation truly was. Theo forgot all about Finn’s crush on Raylah. All that mattered now was that he was in danger, and they needed to help him.
Finn could feel Sofii’s grip on his hand tighten. She looked up at the sky for a moment, then her eyes widened in realization. “Wait. Wouldn’t that make you over five hundred years old?”
Finn let out a chuckle. “Yeah, I look great for 515 years old, right?”
His face darkened before he spoke again. “The reason for that…is because when the kingdom fell, Resh used a spell on me, to ensure that I would live long so that I could still be of use to him.”
Theo heard a sound then, a sound wracked with anguish and tears. But it wasn’t Finn, who looked around with a confused expression on his face. Then he turned around to face Sofii. She was on her knees, her face buried in her hands as she cried for her friend. “I’m so sorry, Finn. You don’t deserve that. Theo may be bad at communicating, but even he knows that you’re a good person underneath all the bad things that happened to you.”
Theo blanched. Bad at communicating? Shit, maybe I am, he thought as he looked at Sofii. Finn sighed and picked Sofii up, giving her a hug. She wrapped her arms around him, still apologizing as she cried. “It’s alright, Sofii. It’s not your fault. And I suppose it’s not entirely mine, either. I wasn’t in control of everything that happened. Can you forgive me?”
Sofii’s body shuddered as she kept crying, but then a new cascade of tears starting coming down when Finn asked for her forgiveness. “O-of course. Can you guys forgive him too?”
Sofii looked at Theo, Kace, and Raylah as she asked them. It was silent for a moment, and Finn looked heartbroken as he wondered if they would forgive him. Kace was the first to speak up. “Yeah. I can tell what you went through with the king was horrible. Did he…force you to spy on us?”
Finn nodded, but the look in his eyes told Theo he was in a different place, thinking about what he experienced. Theo then glanced at Raylah, who seemed to be thinking over what she should say. When she raised her gaze from her fidgeting fingers to Finn, she looked scared. Theo had rarely seen her scared. “I think I can forgive you…I do have a question, although it’s not relevant to what happened to you. Sorry.”
Finn looked nervous as he nodded. He had a feeling he knew what she was about to ask. “What was Theo yelling about when he said you weren’t worthy of his best friend?”
Finn grimaced, wondering how he was going to answer her question as he moved Sofii from his lap to Theo’s. Neither of them knew how to react, so they sat in silence. “Ah…that. Well, after we saw Kace going off with Teri, Theo asked me if I had anyone like that, and I said no. Buuuut that was a lie,” he finished with a smirk.
Theo slapped the side of Finn’s head, and Finn decided to hit Theo with his shovel in response. “So, if that was a lie, then who are you crushing on?”
Finn only smiled and winked in response. Well, he seems better than he was five minutes ago, Theo thought. Whatever Resh did, he’s obviously able to forget about it long enough to focus on other things. Ray’s eyes squinted in confusion, then widened barely a second later when she realized what that wink meant. Rye, Teri, and Kace could barely contain their laughter as they watched Raylah’s face turn red. Theo couldn’t help but laugh along when Ray almost fell off the bench. “What are you dolts laughing at?”
At that point, she was laughing too. Sofii giggled from underneath Theo’s cape, but she felt a sinking feeling that they could only stay this way for so long.
Dear LORD I was not expecting to get such a mixed bag of angst, romance, and chaos. Welp, this is what I get for leaving them in the basement for a month. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think! :D
