New Artist
4-2-2015
This week’s New Artist is New York City rapper Emilio Rojas! If we had to put Emilio in a sub-hip-hop genre it would have to be conscious rap. He is the type of rapper to point out and give light to discrepancies in society and the hip-hop game.
Emilio has been slowly creating buzz in the NYC hip-hop scene linking op with heavy weights like Joe Budden, Joel Ortiz and fellow fanum.fm Artists Chris Webby and Bodega BAMZ.
Uptown-representative isn’t just a talented lyricist, but houses an incredible flow. Most recently, last summer, Emilio put out his mixtape Zero F**ks Given hosted by DJ Camilo. In an interview with FUSE Emilio promised he has a lot more music “stacking up.” In the same interview, Emilio proclaims that he is bringing back a voice that has been lost in the hip-hop game:  the Latino Emcee. More specifically, the bi-racial Emcee. Emilo is half Venezuelan and half white which, he says, drives a lot of his lyrics.
Emilio says that the wrong voices have been in the front lines of NYC hip-hop, and he is here to have his voice heard. We are listening. You should also listen. Check out his new fanum profile here.

Leaderboard Winner
Week 11
This week’s Leaderboard winner is pop/alternative band, The xx. The xx is a group of three musicians who collectively create a sound that is distinct yet mysterious. Their sound can be considered a blend of pop and dance influences tied together through a minimalistic approach.
The band started with founders Madley Croft and Oliver Sim attending high school together at the famous Elliot School in England. Ironically, the two friends were making music independently, but were two shy to discuss their hobbies with each other. It was comedic and surprising when the two found out the other was also making music.
From there, the two built and constructed songs by communicating through computer messages due to both of their shyness. The duo completed their first song, ‘Blood Moon Red,’ at the age of 15. The two continued to make music and started to put out their music on the newly founded social media website Myspace, with little response. The two also started performing gigs and described the experience as ‘painful.’
Croft and Sim were ‘discovered,’ during one of their gigs at Shunt in London. A&R Caius Pawson, with label Young Turks,  was introduced to The xx through their Myspace profile and decided to attend their next show. Pawson described the performance to The New Yorker, as “very funny,” due to the awkwardness of the two, but he saw other possibilities with their music.
Croft and Sim signed a deal with Pawson and started to work on their debut album. In 2009, the band released “xx.”  The album sold slowly at first, but gained traction and was hailed as one of the best and unique albums of 2009 by media outlets like BBC and NME.
Since then, the group released another album “Coexist” in 2012 and are now performing at prestigious events like Coachella and famous venues like the Park Avenue Armory. The xx are working on new music all the time and surprising fans with unreleased material at live shows. Listen to songs like ‘Together’ and ‘You Got The Love’ here on their fanum.fm profile.
The xx was endorsed this week by our Tastemaker Xan. Check out more Artists Xan has headphoned here.

New Artist
3/12/2015
This week’s New Artist is Glass Animals. Glass Animals was added to fanum.fm by our Tastemaker Arisa, and we are ever so thankful.
Glass Animals started making and producing their magical sounds in lead singer-songwriter Dave Bayley’s bedroom in Oxford, England. From there, Glass Animals turned into an eclectic four-peice, experimental band consisting of guitarist/keyboardist Drew MacFarlane, bassist/keyboardist Edmund Irwing-Singer and drummer Joe Seward.
Since 2012, the band has put out two EPs including Leaflings in 2012 and a self-titled EP in 2013. Early in 2013, the band was discovered by music industry heavyweight Paul Epworth who is responsible for working with Artists like Adele and Coldplay. Glass Animals ended up being Paul’s first signee to his new label Wolf Tone.
Since then, the band has put out their debut album Zaba which houses their biggest song to date, ‘Gooey.’ The track is the biggest reflection of their forward thinking sound, which can be given adjectives such as whimsy, airy and dreamy.
Fun Fact:  Dave told USA Today when recording ‘Gooey’ in the studio, he would hold a pineapple while singing to get the sound and vibe right.
Today, ‘Gooey’ has gotten over 18 million streams on Spotify, over 3 million streams on Soundcloud, and has reached all the way up to No. 19 on the Billboard Alternative charts.
Check out Glass Animals’s new fanum.fm profile here where you can listen to tracks like ‘Gooey,’ ‘Pools’ and ‘Hazey.’

Leaderboard Winner
Our Tastemakers have casted their votes and decided on folk/soul duo JOHNNYSWIM as this week's Leaderboard winner!
JOHNNYSWIM is comprised of Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, who met in Nashville, Tennessee and quickly realized their chemistry in writing songs together. Separately, each of them have a history in music with Amanda being the daughter of Donna Summers and Abner who trained as a musician back in his hometown of Jacksonville, FL.
In 2009, the duo recognized their undeniable chemistry outside of music and got married. The two have released many singles and EP's including "Heart Beats" but in 2014, JOHNNYSWIM released their first true, full-length album Diamonds.  Their sounds exemplifies the unison the couple has in and outside of music.

Leaderboard Winner
This week's Leaderboard winner, as voted by our Tastemakers at fanum.fm, is the L.A.-based duo Made In Heights. Made In Heights is a collaboration of singer Kelsey Bulkin and producer Sabzi. Independently, the two have created music, but have experienced true synergy in their styles when they started collaborating around three years ago.
The duo released their first self-titled album in January of 2012. Since then, they have been occasionally releasing huge singles like 'Murakami' and 'Ghosts' that have been keeping music lovers talking and curious.
There have been promises/rumors on a new album release in 2015. If we can base the success on this future LP off of the success of these most recent singles ... soon everyone will be familiar with Kelsey and Sabzi.

New Artist
2/19/2015
This week on fanum.fm, we were awarded a lot of Artist referrals. With all the new Artists to glance through, Phoebe Ryan stuck out. Not only because of her electric hair color, but the fact that one month ago she released her first song on Soundcloud, and is already creating a buzz that is hard to ignore.
For her debut release, Phoebe decided on a cover of R.Kelly and Miguel. The cover includes a mash-up of R.Kelly's provocative popular song 'Ignition' and Miguel's 'Do You...' She accompanied the release with a video on YouTube and as of today, the song has around 300,000 streams on Soundcloud.
A week after the release of 'Ignition/Do You...' Phoebe released her second song 'Mine' which completely validated her future come up. After only two releases, Phoebe has been endorsed and praised by big publications such as Fader, Billboard, Nylon and Earmilk.
Living in L.A., Phoebe has been writing and working with other Artists such as Skizzy Mars and Oh Honey, and is now choosing to showcase her own music. In only a month span, Phoebe has already paved a good path towards her musical future.
Listen to Phoebe's two tracks on her new fanum.fm profile here. If you like her, give her a headphone.
