I wouldn't be surprised if there's a way to reboot the computer with a certain input sequence - on older vehicles sometimes this was turning the key forward three times quickly. My old 93 Dodge Ram 1500 actually pre-dates OBDI I, but it had a simple computer and could output error codes via beeping; just like a computer BIOS does.
