Less is More?
I remember those days when wearing low-cut tops and mini shorts were considered very indecent. However with the advent of social media platforms like Instagram, tumblr and Snapchat, this mindset is quickly diminishing without us even realising it. We have become so accustomed to pictures on our “Explore” page revealing bikini-clad girls(or aspiring models), ladies wearing their lingerie out, or simply girls having “fun”.
Wearing bralettes, mini shorts(that reveals one’s butt cheeks) or even jeans ripped right under the butt are hot trends today popularised by young celebrities like Kylie Jenner. If i were to describe the 21st century woman in one word, I would say, wild, unfortunately. Feminists would argue that every woman should have the right to wear whatever she wants and live however way she wants to. I couldn’t agree more but what are the consequences to advocating such “free” behaviour? With women rights movement, and campaigns like “free the nipple” supported by famous celebrities like Cara Delevingne, it is no surprise why young girls are exposing their bodies online to millions of strangers without any shame. They view this as a kind of liberation away from the clutches of social traditions. However, at what expense?
As a woman, I feel that exposing my body to the whole world is not the way of feminine liberation. As much as I appreciate the female body, I believe that revealing too much will consequently lead to problems with oneself and others around you. Men are innately visual creatures. It is natural for them to subconsciously fixate on women’s bodies or looks rather than their personality. With us posing suggestive pictures online for the world, it aggravates matters with how men view women; inevitably inviting objectification.
Then we, women wonder why chivalry has faded. Of course it has if you refer to yourself and your girlfriends as “bitches” or “camwhores” on social media. or hashtag fatass/twerk. Is that really the image women want to project to the world? It does not matter if you have 100000000likes or 1like, what matters is the lasting impression you leave behind. Anyone can go naked, it’s not a skill or talent. What is there to proof when u go naked? Bravery? I can’t agree more that going nude to the world requires lots of courage but for what..? So that men can “appreciate” the beauty of the women’s body by fantasising about them? While we may have the power to seduce and control their senses in some ways, we lose their respect. We would be just one of the many other girls on Instagram they’ve fantasised about because after all, it’s a free show. If you leave almost nothing to one’s imagination, there is no element of mystery left. If that’s their idea of seduction, I think it is short-lived.
I believe that too much focus is placed on one’s appearance, so much so ugly personalities and behaviour are completely overlooked, sometimes even applauded to my dismay. In today’s age, inventors, social activists and other exemplary individuals get too little recognition while people like KimK(famous for her sex tape) enjoy lavish lifestyles profiting from their infamy. It is deeply worrying and upsetting what society deems as inspiring and interesting these days.
It is best that we sort out our principles and priorities. The first step is by showing who you really are and not what you have.
