Okay the Grayson run has officially made Damian my second favorite Bat Family member and I’m not even sorry.

I knew the gist of the Spyral reunion from fandom stuff, but reading the pages and seeing the illustrations really homed in what a G Damian was.

Like, compare the reunions:

1.) Jason and Tim

The whole third page is some Eldest Daughter shit. And I can’t get too mad at either brother for their reaction (unlike #2) since Dick frames his entry into Spyral as a mutual decision, but their deflections at his attempts to explain really are rough. At the very beginning, it seems like he’s trying to elaborate, but they just fucking shut him down.

Again, not mad at them, because it’s a fucked situation all around and their actions aren’t too extreme given what they know, but the Bats of all people should know how rare it is for a story to be simple. They probably should have been able to try to understand what was going on a little better instead of defaulting to “you’re supposed to be better than Batman” and refusing to budge further. Mildly exasperated is where I’d put myself.

2.) Barbara

Okay, I am actually pissed about this one. Because unlike when Dick approached his brothers and framed the decision between him and Bruce as mutual, he explicitly tells Barbara here that he didn’t want to go. And she still has the gall to call him an endless disappointment. Fuck that.

I’ve read too much of Taylor and Dixon to hate her solely for this, but it’s a bad character moment to be sure.

3.) Damian

What is there to say? They both see each other unexpectedly alive, and the first instinct isn’t to fight or to get angry. It’s to hug. I damn near cried reaching this, especially after making it through the first two groups’ reactions.

Damian was right. They really are the best.

Ha, okay. Just little characterization/fun fact things. 

Dick isn’t a fan of Alfred’s cucumber sandwiches. 

...like consistently, not a fan lol. 

Dick also doesn’t like cranberry muffins! 

But one of his favorite Alfred dishes is crab stuffed mushrooms (weirdo). 

Dick likes to watch nature documentaries to relax...and as a result he knows a lot of random animal fun facts. 

He really overthinks mystery tv lol...even Scooby-doo (which he apparently has watched with the Titans/Wally before lol? cute).

Dick uses fancy English Dunhill aftershave, which might be why he has that reputation for smelling good haha? Thank Alfred for that peeps. 

Dick tends to have trouble making his home feel like home. He keeps very busy and doesn’t usually care about stuff, so that translates into very minimal decoration...or not even removing his stuff from storage/boxes without some cajoling. 

though once he does finally decorate lol, it does tend to be very sentimental, meaningful items pretty much exclusively (ie family photos, flying grayson poster, etc.)

And he likes mint chocolate chip ice cream according to @hood-ex! I have no idea where that is from but I love it. 

I think that’s all I feel like doing for now. Maybe I’ll add some more later, idk. Or other people could add little details too.

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.
