“Jim,” Oswald called weakly from the bedroom. “Jim, I need your help.”

Jim sighed and turned the page of his book. He might be stuck guarding Cobblepot from half the Gotham mafia, but that didn't make him Cobblepot's nursemaid.

Oswald's plea was followed by a long coughing fit, then a thud. Jim snapped to his feet, one hand reaching for his holster, and crept into the bedroom.

Oswald was tangled in what looked like five layers of sheets and blankets, which refused to move despite his weak flailing. His face was even paler than usual, except for his flushed cheeks. His bangs were plastered to his face with sweat. He coughed again and then gave up, sagging against the floor.

“Jesus, Cobblepot.”

Jim pulled at the mass of blankets, but half of them were under Oswald, and the other half were tangled around his limbs. Sighing, he slid his arms under Cobblepot and scooped him back into the bed, blankets and all. Cobblepot wasn't a large man, but he was lighter than he should have been.

Cobblepot mumbled something in a language Jim didn't recognize, squirming and trying to burrow even deeper into the blankets. Jim laid a hand on his forehead: hot and damp with sweat.

“Why didn't you tell me you were so sick?”

Oswald wiped his nose with the back of his sleeve, somehow making the gesture look dignified. “I was feeling better when we arrived. Since then... well. You did not seem pleased to be sharing the premises with me.”

Jim sighed.

“No point protecting you from the mob if you're going to off yourself getting out of bed.”

Oswald's scowl followed Jim as he went to rummage for a thermometer, cough meds, and a can of chicken soup. 

Cobblepot really needed to eat more.

Awesome tips. I always have to remind myself of #2. I never want to say no to anyone! So I have to remind myself that saying no is always an option. <.< 

NUMBER NINE IS INTENSELY TRUE!  It’s easy to come off as elitist or even racist when you go heavy on accents. It’s also really confusing if the reader is unfamiliar with the dialect being used. A few writers have used it to great effect (e.g., Paul Laurence Dunbar), but it’s hard and you’re better off leaving it to native speakers.

So I really want to write a fanfic, but it would be my first one and I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.

Dear fandom friends, 

You might have noticed I’ve been a lot less active in the last few months. That’s about to change. 

This summer, I was approached about a job in a new city. Since then, I’ve interviewed, found a place to live, and officially moved in. I’m still tying up some loose ends, but I’m thrilled for the search to be over. 

Meanwhile, I’ve also been sick for several weeks and have finally started antibiotics. Moving while sick is not fun, but taking the same antibiotic I usually give to dogs is amusing. 

I also successfully dodged Hurricane Irma with no damage to my new place, which happens to be in walking distance of the ocean. I’m aware of how insanely lucky that is. 

Anyway, a lot has been going on. I’m behind on fandom goings-on and intend to catch up.
