... WELL. PERHAPS THIS is partially her fault. She'd sensed the presence of traps right when they'd entered the corridor, but quite frankly, she was too busy reading their missive to really care, and she hadn't thought he'd just go bumbling directly into them like a fool. She's ready to correct him in a moment once she's done reading, but then she catches movement in her peripheral vision, and before she can stop him he's gone and gotten himself snapped up.

"FUCK," SHE AGREES, hastily tucking away papers so she can kneel next to him. Lithe fingers find the jaws of the thing and teeth bare in a grimace as she pulls -

okay you all forced my hand (lying) so have some jay lore under the cut. spoilers for jay.

the hat that now holds jay’s existence as they know it used to belong to an archmage named jezri. she was something of an unscrupulous mage, and was constantly pushing at the boundaries of the weave and her own limitations. she was a wizard who made a deal with a devil to gain access to powerful spells that could potentially allow her to achieve lichdom without having to go through the whole lich process, but did so without informing the devil that this was what she was doing. you never lie to a devil and don’t pay a price, so during an attempt to create a phylactery, the devil appeared and all hell quite literally broke loose.

jezri herself survived, although incredibly weak and malformed. her soul had splintered into a bunch of smaller pieces instead of being contained within the phylactery, and she had to abandon her tower before it was discovered and she was slain before the lich process could complete. jay is one of these pieces of her soul absorbed into one of her favorite hats, representing jezri’s unending curiosity and thirst for knowledge. they are, on balance, a good entity, but also have the capacity for evil given their source material. the recipe they carry with them was for a potential soul-binding potion, enabling her to tie her soul to the phylactery; jay is now tied to the hat and will simply cease to exist if it’s destroyed.

they are now unwittingly caught in a game of 52 card pickup between a fledgling lich that wants to collect all the pieces of her soul again to ensure her immortality, and a devil that wants its due.

NOTHING'S EVER EASY, is it? When Vasile had been discovered, Riley had tried to talk the townspeople down from their somewhat understandable fear and rage - he can't help what he is the same as none of us can help what we are, it's okay, he won't hurt you, he won't hurt you - but they remained unconvinced, and they're still fucking chasing them through the woods on the edge of town.

THEY'RE IN A mountainous area not unlike that of Riley's homeland, and he hears a gasp from Vasile as he seems to trip and teeter - a hand catches his shirt, pulls him back from the edge of a ravine that plummets straight down some hundred-odd feet. It's deep and wide - and convenient for their escape.

RILEY DOESN'T WAIT for permission before he's scooped Vasile close to him, and brown and white wings extend finally from their place in the Veil to their full wingspan, joined by another pair that shimmer with light from the celestial plane.

"HOLD ONTO ME," is all he says before he takes a few swift strides and flings both of them off the side of the cliff.

THE BENEFIT OF being a drow around these parts is that usually, she's left alone in busy taverns such as this.
