Statement
My name is Faye Henshall and I am currently in my second year of college hoping to further my education at your university. My best skills in art include pencil work, biro work and painting, which is what I will showcase to you on my portfolio.
Within my pieces of art, I’ve been inspired by a range of artists, including Ian Murphy and Tim Burton because their work is based upon the gothic genre and they have the ability to create realism within their pieces, whilst almost creating a distorted and gothic atmosphere to it. I’m also inspired by architecture and portraiture as they both include very intricate detailing and lines that I feel I can do quite well. I have always been inspired by these styles as I feel this gives me the potential to explore not only a range of media’s but also a range of techniques, such as pencil, biro and acrylic paint and techniques like graphite transfers and emulsion and mark making.
I feel as though that if I attend your university, it will allow my develop the skills I have already acquired, but it will also allow me to be even more experimental with my work and show me a range of new techniques and media’s.

Sunflower

This piece is the first painting I did inspired by the botanical aspects of art. I wanted to include my skills of painting with a monochromatic colour scheme within the piece, but also include the real life colours of the chosen flower. I feel as though this choice worked out in my favour as it creates a new line of depth and tone within my work and has allowed me to be more experimental with my work.

Architecture

This is a piece I constructed during my first year of college. The inspiration for this piece was the drawing style of Ian Murphy and how he creates his shadows and depth within his work, but I was also inspired by Sunga Park for the way she melts her work into the page using watercolour. I created the background layer for this piece using emulsion paint and tissue pager to get an unfinished look to the piece.

GCSE final piece

This is my final piece from my GCSEs and I created this piece using watercolour for the background, fine liner for the detail and shading and acrylic paint for the bee’s. On the second image, there is the same piece but in the development stage to show the process of how I created it. I was inspired by artists known as Ugo Gattoni and Sunga Park and I used their styles on my own photographs that I had taken myself.

The Nun

This isn’t one of my best paintings, however this was the first painting I created of a portrait. I used a range of different acrylic paints upon a blank A3 canvas. I wanted to try and experiment with portraiture as I have used other media’s in the past, but I have yet to use paint with this style and I feel this piece shows off my development as an artist.

Door Painting

Back in lockdown, I would tend to paint onto my walls and doors in my room. So I decided to paint something inspired by the gothic era/genre. I used both gouache and acrylic paint to showcase my work and all the blended shades and fine lines of the piece. This piece shows off my experimental skills within my portfolio as it wasn’t created upon a blank piece of canvas paper, but rather an outside medium.

My Own Photo work

I created a tonal piece inspired by my own photograph from a botanical aspect. I produced this work by using a graphite transfer because of the intricate detailing of the flowers and I felt that this technique would work best for this piece.

Botanical Developments

For these 4 pieces, I wanted to develop and expand my art skills by looking into a new area for inspiration. I still kept the same media of pencil that I feel works best for me, however I took inspiration from two artists by the name of Liu Dan and Lynn Dolman who look into botanical tonal drawings.

Mono Prints

I wanted to attempt to create a couple of developmental pieces by using a new technique. I created these mono prints using brown ink and mark making. These pieces will help me as they show I can use different media’s and I can be experimental with my work.

Through the Eyes

My style of work is definitely inspired by distorted images and the gothic era and I feel this piece showcases where the inspiration is from. I used pencil to create the tonal shading and this piece was one of the first drawings I created when I first started to take my artwork seriously.

Emotional

This piece was created back in 2021 and it displays many emotions that can be felt at a time. I used a range of pencils from 6B to 5H to produce this piece. It is the size of A3 and I feel as though it is one of my personal bests using this media.

My final Piece for Art Component 1

For my final piece of my first project in college, I used biro and pencil for the range of shading used. I created this piece by using my own photographs and photoshopped and layered them on top of each-other so they create a blended collage of the faces. For the background, I used a photocopied image of a few pages to they would fit the page as the piece is the size of A2.

Skeleton Roses

I created this piece back in 2023 where I used a black, red and green biro to draw up the details and tonal shading. I used different techniques to create the shades by cross hatching, line work and circular shading.
