AN ABLE BEAST (ft. ARIELA JACOBS)
Northern skies in my head
Apt and able, I could get there
For only a little while would I go
From all these ties and my headroom
Feathered eyes will watch ahead
While me and my mind float over there
Build up a shelter in the long, long night
Here I would grow and I'll make home
Well, I've been waiting
And I've been patient
But I've been wasting time
My sight keeps fading
Coz I see through rusted eyes
My naked mind
Feed up the fires in the calling night
Friends I would find in the able beast
Whose teeth and claws are what keep them alive
Well, I'll be them
Well, I've been waiting
And I've been patient
But I've been wasting time
My sight keeps fading
Coz I see through rusted eyes
My naked mind

CALEB WILLIAMS
You recently took down a few jams from your Soundcloud page (much to my disappointment), however, does this mean you are working towards some sort of bigger release?
Yeah hopefully bro - I just took down a bunch of really old tracks. The new stuff I've been working on this year has far surpassed the quality of those haha. I'll hopefully have some kind of release out in the next 6 months! Really excited to get some music of my own out properly.
Billy Davis (who, for those playing at home, Caleb plays bass for) just released a cracking new single in 'No Longer Lovers', one that you produced - how has the response been so far?
The response has been wild so far! It's had airplay in the states and Europe a bunch of times as well as plenty of local love. Also my parents love it which is always a good sign haha.
What other projects are you working on at the moment, and what are you hoping to work towards with your production side of things?
I've been producing for a bunch of artists! Got some really exciting things in the works. There's probably 6 people I've got some finished tracks with that will hopefully come out soon! Just hoping in the next year or two I'll be living off producing for other people. I like to realise potential in artists and show them they can achieve greater than they thought they could. If I can keep doing that I'll be a happy man.
So, tell me how you morphed 'Dress My Eyes' into the tasty treat that is your remix?
I wanted something completely different so I just took the vocals and left everything else out. I chopped up a bunch of the vocals until I found something cool and kind of built backward from there!

KELLY MAKER
Hi Kelly! So, tell me a little about what you do.
Hello! I’m a 21 yr old photographer, and artist from Melbourne. I use film and collage to create abstract images that inspire me. I also make clothes, bags and zines using embroidery as my main medium.
Where has your art style come from, and do you find that it is evolving as you experiment or respond to things?
My style is always changing and evolving. I have always been interested in fashion and fashion photography but disliked the way it seems to follow the exact same format in every shoot. There was no creativity and originality. My style grew from this dislike when I decided to start deconstructing my photos and adding new elements to them. From there, each photo has it’s own unique story, sometimes literally in the novel collages I do!
What are you working on at the moment?
I am building my portfolio, hoping to showcase my photos and art at a small solo gallery early next year. Stay tuned.
Explain how you came to creating the artwork for ‘Dress My Eyes'?
After I listened to the song I immediately thought of a photo I had that would fit perfectly with the lyrics. It only took me an hour or so to create the artwork, it just happened naturally.
What's next for Kelly Maker?
Photos, photos, photos! This is the only thing I see in my future. Where it takes me I don’t know but hopefully somewhere exciting!

DRESS MY EYES
So come guess your line, guess your light out
Come guess your line and watch the white out
Frost in the eye, see them naked
Fall into time, lost for ages
And I feel like this place is overrun
And the only way to find is out
So come dress my eyes, make them open
Come dress my eyes, now I believe
Shade dripping down like it's make-up
Made all the time, is this for real?
And I feel like this place is overrun
And the only way to find is out
And I feel like this place is overrun
And the only way to find is out
Frozen, I'm in no state to fight them
Generations of eyes
No doubt I'll end floating away with everything
Generations of eyes

THRILL.
Troy Hill my man, introduce yourself to everyone!
Hi, I'm Troy, I hail from Melbourne's East.
Tell me how your production style was born, and where has it come from?
My production Style has slowly evolved into a more mature sound I guess, but I love making intimate sounds. Thats what drives me to creating music anyway!
Love what you've done with 'Unstable Boy' - how did you get it there?
‘Unstable Boy’ is a great song, James sent me the original and I knew it would be fun to edit, and the rest was history. I tried to involve my palette of sounds that I tend to use a lot of now, and I believe that worked nicely.
So what's next for Thrill?
What's next for me you say? Hopefully an EP release soon with some talented artists on board, I've held off with releasing music as I want it to have a real impact!

UNSTABLE BOY (THRILL REMIX)
‘Thrill’ is Melbourne-based Producer Troy Hill.
His sound is articulated through shimmering soundscapes, which is merged with well-blended vocal cuts, pulsating synths, and 'chilled' yet dynamic percussion.
It's a dreamy, floaty, summery vibe that you can find yourself totally lost in.

Xani, tell me a little about what you do, and why you've spent the last few months in Melbourne!
That's a big question! Well I'm a graphic designer and apparel designer who can't seem to stay put. I found myself in Melbourne back in May to do a 3-month graphic design program aka Shillington College.
How would you describe your creative style, and what's your favourite medium?
Hmm my creative style has been described back to me as "something that doesn't fit in corporate studios". It's raw. It often starts out as an experiment. It's my thoughts and emotions translated into something others can see but might not understand. Although, lately I've been trying to design outside my element so I can see how far I can push myself and my work.
As for mediums, I wouldn't say I have one favourite. Every medium brings out a different meaning. Drawing and painting has a special place in my heart because that's what I grew up doing with my dad. Photography allows me to capture moments, emotions, people, and places (which I often get printed to paint on). Graphic design gets me lost in what I'm doing. Apparel design offers self expression (and makes me money).
What are you working on at the moment?
Collecting my thoughts and sorting out what's next. Oh, and I've got a good amount of freelance work that I've collected throughout my travels.
So explain how you came to creating the artwork for 'Unstable Boy'?
This was a tricky one. I listened over and over again. I thought I had a good concept to run with at first but once I got it out of my head it didn't resonate. It wasn't until I was sitting in a hotel office chair at 11:30 pm when I just started drawing. Suddenly I had these shapes on paper. The eyes represent something hiding in the darkness, and in many Native American tribes a cactus represents protection, endurance, and adaptability – something those eyes were longing for. I interpreted 'Unstable Boy' as a progression of sorts, from dark to light (and feel free to take that in any way you please, because that's the beauty of a song).
What's next for Alexandria Duke?
That's a secret! What I can tell you is I'm taking these next steps to grow as a designer. I also just started the design of my dream shipping container house in North Shore, O'ahu, so that's cool!
P.s Thanks James, for the lovely opportunity to be a part of 'Unity'.

UNSTABLE BOY
Under four legs of mine
A kingdom is burning
Auburn bright
Summer sunlight inside
Stirrup the horses
Unstable Boy
All the lords and their knights
They riddle with nothing
Can't see the signs
And I can feel winter's bite
They call as it holds them
Covered in white
Now we could find
Unfated time
But your foolish mind isn't here
Nameless wild
And the beasts that bind it together
Your foolish mind isn't here
Under four legs of mine
A kingdom is burning
Auburn Bright
And I can feel summers cry
So stirrup the horses
Unstable Boy
Now we could find
Unfated time
But your foolish mind isn't here
Nameless wild
And the beasts that bind it together
Your foolish mind isn't here

CALLUM MARSHALL
ESC was recently born out of Left Right Recordings - tell me about it!
Hi mate! Well, for about the last year I’ve been working with a guitarist (Joel Mather), and our approach has been to combine our influences to make electronic music with an organic element. So ESC came about as an output for the songs we’ve been putting together.
Where and how was your production style born?
It all started with drum n bass really. I moved to London for two years back in 2011 and saw a lot of great music on some nice systems, which helped me really appreciate how diverse the genre is. This definitely helped in getting me in to labels like Good Looking Records, Metalheadz and Exit where I found the raves to be unlike anything I had experienced in Melbourne. Particularly in the way the DJs were mixing. You’d get some really cool blends where there’d be heavy beats and bass over some nice Rhodes loops or something just really lush. I found that combination of “ruff with the smooth” really made a certain vibe at a night and would draw some of the wildest reactions from people who obviously loved the music. This is something I would say is pretty much central to my intentions when I make music, where you’ll have some choppy breaks and subby bass with a mellow pad above it to try and contrast moods.
As expected, you've twisted 'Ivory' into a field of lushness - how did you get it there?
I used a few of the instruments and chains I’ve developed with Joel in other ESC projects so that helped with getting into the arrangement pretty quickly. I have a tendency to transition in to minor and then Joel came up with a transition back to major to bridge the gap. So I think having those shifts throughout provides more of a resolution for when the vocal re-emerges at the end. I also used the quieter parts of the vocal but kept them quite loud in the mix, which helped make everything seem a bit more spacious.
What's next for ESC?
We’ve got two songs that are just about to be mastered and a few other projects that should take shape in the coming months.

IVORY (ESC REMIX)
ESC is Melbourne local Callum Marshall.
Vintage samples, spacious soundscapes, delicious pads & choppy breakbeats are what make up his lushness. After building his sound under the name ‘Lumsy’ for many years, 'ESC’ marks a new venture for Callum, set to build its name through Left Right Recordings.

Hugo Mathias
Last time we chatted you were over in Namibia, and you told me that being there "has influenced my art in a way that I’m not yet aware of" - now that you're back, can you articulate how it has done so?
Yes, I can try. I’ve always found myself blending my art with my interest in pop culture – drawing my favourite musicians or actors. But I feel that I want my art to have more substance than simply being representative. I want it to tell a story.
I’ve always been interested in history, and spending all that time in Africa I was thinking about these cultures. They have been there for thousands and thousands of years, migrated to different areas of the continent over time, and different languages have melded together to form new ones. Cultures trade with other cultures, but there’s always a root to everything. I think about this even with music. “Who did it first?” Rock came from blues which came from American slave spirituals, which came from West African folk music. You can trace things back. I noticed so many parallels between contemporary American hip hop dance and traditional African dance. I think we all know where that link came from.
I started drawing things I saw - daily life and wild life. I became interested in a lot of European master painters who had travelled during the late 19th Century and recorded what they saw. Sometimes they painted contemporary subjects and sometimes they painted from history. I want to create images like this. However, given European culture at this time, their history paintings depicted Roman, Greek or Biblical subject matter. I want my images to tell stories that are rarely told – the ethnic diversity of South Africa, King Moshoeshoe of Lesotho’s diplomacy, David Livingstone’s heart being buried under a tree in Zambia, or the failed attempts of European colonists to domesticate zebras.
So in a nutshell I want to develop my paintings into stories from history. Given my recent experiences, the subject would be southern Africa. Since I’ve been back I’ve kept rather busy with commercial work, so I haven’t had time to paint. However, I’ve produced a 26-page zine with drawings & writings from my eight months spent in Africa. Two weeks before my flight back to Melbourne my bag was stolen on a train in Zambia. It contained cash and my passport, but most importantly my sketchbook. I’ve attempted to recreate it from memory, and the zine is the product.
Although your back from your trip, are you still "recording things as you see", or does being back in AUS mean different directions & motivations?
I’m still reflecting on Africa and conjuring up compositions for paintings I would like to complete. We are spoilt in Melbourne, there’s free art museums that exhibit these European master painters everywhere – NGV, State Library, etc. So, I’m taking advantage of those opportunities and gaining inspiration all the time.
So explain how you came to create the ‘Ivory’ single cover?
I had a few ideas but settled on the repetition of the face. I guess it’s a very basic representation of that idea that everything has a root and you can trace it back. In this case, the repetitive faces become smaller but they’re all linked together somehow – opacity tool in Photoshop. The lyrics, to me, describe ageing and reflecting back on things.
What's coming up for Hugo Mathias Illustration?
I’ll be working in my studio until the summer. During this time, I want to execute these ideas I’ve talked about concerning African history. Then I’m going home to New Zealand for a month to drive. My only plan is to drive. I want to work on a project with my home country as the subject. I just booked the flights, so I’ll think more on this later.

IVORY
Look at all my crooked teeth
The ivory's chipped and shattered from bearing the cold
But it's the cold I like
The ocean's a place that I know
Where the waves pick me up and then knock me back down on my feet
And with the tide I go
Under this age-old spire
That looked over many who offered their minds
And all of the ventures; lost, undefined
A reckless hope
Well I could learn magic to fly
But all the witches and wizards I know, well, they're all liars
All the birds seem to get it just fine
The same up and down motion that I've tried countless times
They sit and watch me try
Then they shattered their beaks on the spire
Generous advice of the wisest kind
And all of the books that I thought fiction read so bright
Thousands of years float down from the sky
Where I'd lost my teeth and others their minds
Now I'm left dry, finally
Ivory, ivory, ivory, gold
Ivory, ivory, ivory, gold
