Bird Taxidermy Tutorial

I made a little tutorial for some basic bird taxidermy. Just a warning: this is image heavy and graphic. I had to shorten it a lot to get everything in, so if you’re having trouble feel free to drop me a message!

Basic tools: wire cutter, scalpel, cotton, zip ties, superglue, hot glue, wire, bird form/head/eyes, drill, blowdrier, degreasing soap, fat scraping tool of your choice, borax, clay, tpins.

I've personally seen a lot of illegal stuff with domestics this year. People seem to think that just because they found a dog or cat outside, that it solely belongs to them and they don't have to wait to work on it. There's also been people buying illegal domestic stuff, which of course we all know is illegal. Like goodbye 2017, may the law catch those who willfully break it in 2018.

Ugh. Friendly reminder to everyone: in most places, pets are legally considered property. Dead or not, it legally belongs to someone. If you do not try to find the rightful owner, this IS considered theft, and IS punishable by law. This is only one reason why it’s recommended to find the rightful owner of a domestic animal for at least a month. And this goes for any domestic, by the way. Cow, horse, goat, pig, sheep, duck, chicken, snake, etc. Unless the carcass is rotten beyond recognition or just bones or something you need to try to find its original owner.

Not to mention it’s completely heartless not to. I’ve had a dog who was hit and killed by a car, and had several friends whose cats went missing and at least one who later turned up as roadkill. I’ve also worked for animal services for a city, where we were responsible for roadkill pickup. I cannot even begin to explain how important it is for an owner to have some closure and know what happened to their pet, even if the truth is very grim and upsetting. At least you know what happened. And some people may really, really want the body back so they can bury it or cremate it or whatever they may do (I have a non-vulture vegan friend who got her cat’s skull cleaned and put it on display, so honestly you never know!). Don’t rob someone of that.

Finally, STOP TRYING TO SELL CAT AND DOG PELTS! Don’t try to trade for it. Don’t do some kind of work-around. This is all very illegal and serious business. Warn anyone you see doing this, and if they ignore your warning honestly go report them. If you are willfully breaking the law I’m sorry but we don’t need you in the community.

skinned my second rat today, and i think i did well. she’s very pretty. meanwhile, my first boy is in the pickle lol… i like this new hobby. i feel… more at peace with death while i work. i love rats so it’s pleasant to admire them up close too
