Dainty hands stopped midway through combing out her braids ready for bed as her chambermaid spoke, fingers lingering in the thick, dark locks for a moment while she considered her answer carefully.

It wasn’t unusual for her chambermaid to speak to her about personal matters, and she had gone over this topic at length with her litter mates already. She was still unsure, however; there was the chance that her feelings might become the latest topic of the servants’ gossip, although she had a feeling that the announcement of her betrothal to the distant King would have already circulated the palace staff by now, and that speculation would have begun.

“I wasn’t asked; I volunteered for it,” she explained, twisting a lock of hair around a slender finger. “Mother and father need Mosio, and it feels like the right thing to do… I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the right thing to do.”

She offered her chambermaid a smile, content with her own answer, even if it was only half of the full story that she had already disclosed to her sisters.
