Firsts season 3

In the first minute of this mini webseries we got bisexual main character, absurdly pretty actresses and U-haul lesbianism. 11/10

I love this to bits. It's so cute and it packs a lot of story into about 20 minutes. A bite-sized romance that I'm likely to rewatch for the feelgood.

Terminology quibbling

What defines a BL/GL/QL that makes it not a regular queer romance?

My short answer to that is "I don't have any fucking idea".

My long answer is that personally I go with whatever people decide something is called because it's easier to be understood when you operate within an agreed upon terminology. If the romance is the plot line and other plot aspects take the backseat, there's zero or very little Gay Angst, the themes are reasonably typical of BL since the start and how it has developed, sure, I'll call it BL/GL/QL.

To continue the long answer, I don't view queer romance as a subgenre of romance, but queer is a useful additional label (and an academic term) for not-straight and/or not-cis romance subgenres. Of course, genres are only commonly agreed upon labels, they're not cast in stone, and your mileage may and will vary depending on what you find relevant when categorising works. It's just, as I mentioned above, easier to do as the Romans when in fiction-discussion Rome.

Genre definitions based on themes and form make a fair bit sense to me personally, such as romance, satire and documentary, but genres as a tree structure don't make sense to me at all. A set of labels/tags for various important characteristics of the work in question do make the most sense to me - like "love story, LGBTQIA+, gay/bi/pan male lead character(s), gay/bi/pan male support character(s), South Korea, urban life, paranormal, comedy, animal-human transformation, bar setting" - I'd be interested in a queer love story, side-eye the paranormal bit but be intrigued by the transformation. This is me making a set of tags for a specific show that exists, by the way. It gets classified as a BL, not as a queer romance.

There's already a generally agreed upon characteristc of BL/GL that the most important part of the story is the love story, they're not for instance action shows with a love side plot, which makes the romance/love story label fairly mandatory. Labels indicating that the main love story isn't about heterosexuals would also be ever-present for what we call BL/GL/QL now.

The long answer also includes that romances are not limited to rom-com or lighthearted feelings, but include tragedies, tales of loss, tales of abuse, crime stories and so on and so forth. The number of fiction genres and subgenres is vast - and it makes no sense to me to make a branch on the fiction tree called queer, where pretty much all of the general fiction varieties get a second twig or leaf labelled "queer [insert usual subgenre term]" and then staple another branch to the queer branch and do the same thing all over again with "BL [insert usual subgenre term]". Or stick the BL branch somewhere else in the tree, for that matter.

Side note: a Tumblr post is probably not the best way to revolutionise how the world thinks about genres and labelling of fiction.

Another side note: I'm not dipping into how the terminology is used in Japan, but do read this great blog post by nicks-den. BL history is very interesting and it's always good to know some background. But as Erica Friedman says in the notes to "On defining yuri", "Fan language is free to shift and change with fashion and need, so that it often runs ahead of both commercial and research terminology (...)" - this fan language has shifted a fair bit in the export out of Japan, and the usage a lot of fans globally are familiar with is what I'm talking about.

However the category is defined, the outdated notion that BL/yaoi is more or less steamy gay stuff made for and by straight women shouldn't be a factor in the definition anymore, although some people do like to cling to that idea. There may however be a notable lack of queer community references, because the target audience is generally more widely defined than The Gay People, but as there are cultural differences between such communities, it may just be that as a queer moving in social circle A in region B you miss a reference that's well known in social circle C in region D.

Which means I can't really see how BL/GL differs all that much from any other queer romance, except possibly in that the plot conflicts, the obstacles to the love story, don't primarily have to do with being queer (i.e. the QL lack of Gay Angst). If there's a struggle with acceptance from the couple's surroundings, does that maybe make it a non-BL/GL?

Is SKAM season 3 a queer romance because the main character struggles with accepting his sexuality and with belonging to a community he doesn't feel is relevant, or is it a BL because it's an intense boy/boy romance with very little in the way of sexuality acceptance plot points and very much in the way of other forms of acceptance plot points?

tl;dr I don't like the BL/GL/QL terms all that much.

It's all (queer) romance, as far as I'm concerned. I also happen to be extremely tired of the main obstacle to love and happiness etc. in queer fiction being omg gay. I've practically stopped watching Western queer films because if I have to watch one more teary homophobia scene I may have to maim the director. I want some fucking escape, goddamnit, I want non-heterosexuality to not be a fucking problem all the time in our own fucking media. And this is why I have a permanent grin on my face when watching something where anything can be an obstacle except the queerness. I have actually slowly started to get rid of some of the annoyance with queerness obstacles, some soft BL approaches have been just fine with me, since I said to hell with it and dived into QL.

I don't really have any great suggestions for a better terminology than LGBTQ+ romance/queer romance (I quite like this overview of the genre, although it lacks some common Asian QL traits), but I do have some thoughts.

Perhaps what we in this age and place call BL/GL could be labelled idealised queer romance.

I mean, the usual expectance of a BL/GL is that it's pretty idealised anyway.

(Yes, I'm aware that "idealised romance" is a bit of a pleonasm. A romantic story can be pretty gritty, though. For an example of a romance narrative that's not very idyllic you have literally thousands of so-called regular queer films and books to choose from.)

Seeing as BL/GL often feature a queer semi-permeable bubble where the characters don't have to deal much with being surrounded by straights, and the obstacles to the romance often have little to do with struggles queer people face, the world in a typical QL can be viewed as a fairly rosy picture. In other queer romances, you can bet homophobia is going to rear its ugly head at some point.

Ditching the BL/GL terms would sort out some arguments about for instance I Told Sunset About You - it's romantic, it's Asian (which does tend to make a lot of non-Asian people think BL automatically), but Oh-aew's and Teh's struggles with identity and sexuality practically scream Gay Angst queer romance.

If everything is a variety of queer romance, then I Told Sunset About You is a queer romance, which could also be tagged as idealised by some, while 2gether is without doubt an idealised queer romance.

These two examples are naturally not randomly picked, 2gether is often held up as an example of extremely BL-y BL while there are arguments about which genre I Told Sunset About You belongs to.

(What's more, in Thailand the genres aren't called BL and GL, although they do use those terms as well so that the international crowd understands. It's called waai (วาย) from the letter Y for yaoi/yuri, which is basically as little helpful as BL/GL, but it neatly illustrates a shift in fan language.)

In more recent days and somewhat ambiguous, we have My Stand-In, which dips its toes into the cesspool of homophobia but resolves it BL style easily. Is it an idealised queer romance? Maybe. Do we have to argue at great length about that or can we just call it a queer romance? I think so. Would I call it an IQR (look, groovy acronym!)? I would, but I can see how it could be viewed as not sufficiently idealised.

All in all, I'd like to move on from arguments about whether something is a BL or not, based more or less on personal ideas about what a BL is (I've seen some who seem unaware that non-BL queer shows and films exist) to arguments about how idealised a show is and how central the love story is in it. The volume of arguments wouldn't be reduced in the slightest, but I think it would make more sense as the output of comics/novels/live action shows and films operate now.

(I've talked a bit about terminology with some friends and I was very insistent to one about having spotted a Greek BL on Gagaoolala, and then I mulled over words and meanings for a while and I also looked in vain for that Greek BL, hence this post. I found two Greek films, but are they BL/GL or not? Gagaoolala has a BL/Yaoi category, but they don't tag films or shows as BL. Is it important how the films are labelled, when I'm able to find what I want to see? (Actually the 'Greece' tag does not work and I need to have words with Gagaoolala, but I digress.) Either way I'm planning on giving both a go. And possibly call them QR or IQR or just bloody IR as I see fit.)

Thanks a great fucking bundle for the heartbreak, director Eric Linn.

I've watched Burmese GL She (2024), and I'm about to start a campaign to get Linn to make season 2 so main characters Hnin Su and Nge can get the happiest of endings.

She is a mini series in four parts, but has been put together in one 46 minutes video for the "uncut" version which is the one I watched.

Just so you know: the first few minutes are very uncomfortable to watch. Skip to 2:50 to avoid domestic abuse and non-explicit rape. There are a couple of not all out terrible flashbacks and at one point we see scars, but the scars are shown in a beautifully healing scene.

What's more, She is cinematically lovely. The colouring is mostly in the sepia direction, both cold and warm, it's very pretty and suits the slow current of the story. It's significantly sharper when it takes the heartbreaking turn. Which actually made me gasp. I was so absorbed.

I assume Linn had a modest budget, but he's wringing a lot out of it, with a good cinematographer and overall very decent craftsmanship. The pacing is a bit odd to me, but I'm not complaining. 9/10. I'm docking a point for an odd jump in a very important scene.

If you like some angst with your ladies, you should absolutely watch:

Healing Thingyan is a new BL from Myanmar, dropping all week (ep 1 today, ep2 tomorrow, ep3 March 21 (fin), special ep 22) on YouTube. It's already passed censorship so fingers crossed we get all of it with no further delays!

Episode 1 was setup of the love triangle (and this is a legit triangle) between three friends. The show, and their drama, is centered around their interactions during Thingyan (a festival similar to Songkran in Thailand) over multiple years. It's only 10 mins but has potential; give it a shot if you have a minute, to support them!

Other BL from Myanmar (in order of recommendation):

Bagan Beginning (2024) - better produced than the others below, but feels largely like a tourism advert. Some great visuals of the Burmese tourist spots. Good trans rep and interesting from a cultural perspective on trans vs gay acceptance. The plot takes a wild turn and someone does die but it also has a happy ending lol

The Love Ring (2022) - rough production and some old tropes I don't love but has a (partially obscured) kiss and a happy ending

The Star S1 and S2 (2022-2023) - S1 is rough going where the gay character is basically abused and hit by a car; S2 is all about making up for that by having him doted on by a rich new love interest

Endearment (2019; incomplete) -ngl I don't remember a ton about this one except it was cute and has potential but never got completed. Its the first one that I'm aware of, though, so I'm keeping it on the list!

This Is A Gay Asian Rant About Bl Comments Made By Some Queer Westerners I See Sometimes.

So you know of those gays (usually white) that made dumb tiktok dancing to list of countries that legalized same sex marriage and list of countries that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ poeple as a way to say something racist. yeah i kinda got the same vibes from some comments regard how asian BL are homophobic just cause they don't live up to queer western standard. look, i'm not saying that some BLs and their creators don't deserve criticism regard how they capitalized/exploited queerness for an easy cash grab.

But people need to understand that Asian countries despite recent progress are still very much culturally conservatives. so when people says that thai bl is homophobic and all the characters looks like bunch of straight guys, which is true for some olders thai BLs i'm not gonna denied that. but after all this time and newer BLs generally being very queer and most of creators being out queer themself and poeple still making these comments, i'm annoyed.

And don't get me start on the actors. you don't know them! why are you making assumption and calling them queerbaiter just cause they acts in bl. like maybe they're straight, maybe they're not but what they're definitely doing is making queer content for you know, queer people here. so when you made halfass comments about their sexuality what do you think that made other queer people who still in the closet feels. and when you add the nationality to that, "these thai bl pair are this and that, this korean actor is so ungrateful for his bl past", etc. when our societies are still very much in still in progress regard LGBTQIA+ acceptance. it make us living here feels fucking awful like somehow we're lesser queer than people in the west just cause we don't have citibank at pride or some shit.

And the shittiest in my humbled opinion are comments regard censored chinese bl. people do know like, that the creators making these bl are risking their livelihoods for this. that these shows getting make at all are miracles. yes it sucked that they're censored but they're still very much queer shows making by queer people who want to express thier queerness despite the chinese government being the chinese government. when people dimissing these shows as not belonging in queer media, you're also dimissing their creators and audiences as not belonging in the community.

Look what i want to say is that we're trying our best over here, and maybe our best are not up to your liking. the ways we talk and express our queerness maybe still can be perceived as problematic by western queer standard. but these media are our house and you're the guests, for people aren't shitty we appreciated that you're here engaging and loving our media, this is your home too and you're welcome in it. i can speak for myself that i very much love being here on tumblr and interacting with people from all over the world who love BL. but for people who are being shitty sometimes about asian bl.

Just when I was losing faith in Vietnamese BL they somehow pulled off a historical BL with a happy ending. Mind you, I'm not saying it was good on an objective scale--this was clearly a labor of love by a tiny team with an iPhone and access to an old building. They did the absolute most with what they had, though.

It's called The Dandy and His Servant and I watched it based on the title along, because not gonna lie I've probably read a romance novel with that same title. This show speedruns its way through all the tropes you could want it to hit in a very cute way. There's caretaking and learning to read and the servant is shirtless gathering wood and of course there's the 'call me anh' conversation. Actual kissing too.

The attempted arraigned marriage crisis worried me, because this was the point where it could have shifted dramatic and tragic, but that was resolved pretty quickly and happily for (almost) all parties involved. The subtitles are good but hard-coded.

There's no doubt QL can help nudging opinion towards more tolerance for queer people, by way of being sweet likeable entertainment for cishets - as well as for queers hunting for content relevant to our own lives.

Tarrar: The Star

After watching Tick Tick Again I went down the production company Love TV rabbit hole, because they have been quite productive, and tried to sort out the QL from the rest (by the way, there's a not-QL film by them I'm mad about not being able to understand a word of, it lacks subtitles/cc, but it seems to be about beauty ideals and the pressure of fame).

They also made a trailer for a planned show, Tarrar: The Star:

But it's been two years since that aired and there's nothing since then, except some cute bts from a photoshoot. Sigh. I have to resign myself to never getting to watch it, I suppose.

Tick Tick Again

Brace yourself, because I'm about to say something positive about one of the tropes on my Top Five Most Beloathed Tropes List.

I've watched a film about fated lovers and I liked it.

A lot.

I refuse to believe this means my brain rot is worsening, and choose instead to believe that Burmese production company Love TV did it so charmingly and so un-obnoxiously that they won me over, this once.

What I watched is Tick Tick Again, and here's the trailer:

Where did they go right, as opposed to various other takes in Asian drama?

First of all, they kept it short and sweet. One hour, not seven hundred (I'm still not over the slog of that one super popular show I dragged myself through). They did drag it out a little bit with some flashbacks that weren't terribly necessary, but all together it's a tight and well paced film - quiet and understated.

Second, they mostly kept it to showing, not telling, apart from one sequence where I admit I got distracted by my cat because they didn't quite manage to hold my attention.

Third, lead actor Min Set Thit is cute as a fucking button.

Fourth, Myanmar isn't a terribly progressive country LGBTQ+ wise, so it was quite moving to see how they navigated the issue of making BL by making the backstory couple het and the romance toeing the platonic line, although there's no doubt it's a gay romance. You could argue it's actually about friendship, if you wanted to convince an upset government official or neighbourhood busybody.

Also, this is a professional production. Decent sound, decent cinematography, decent lighting. Director Ko Set seems to do almost every job on it, but does each of them well.
