What is a Good Leader? Female Leadership Training

Countless numbers of people over the years have weighed in on what qualities it takes to make a good leader. From academicians to laypeople, the answers have been as diverse as the people who were asked. A new study from Princeton, has finally given a definitive answer. A member of that study, Connie Jackson, responded to the question, creating the definition that the study had been seeking. When asked what leadership was, she responded, "Strong leadership starts with being able to pull together a group of people—who may not have anything in common—and getting them to buy into a vision of themselves as a collective group who can achieve uncommon results." In short, leaders can convince people of their own self-worth and endow them with the motivation and the drive that it takes to get them to work together and to form a team. A good leader can and should work with those who are subordinate to them, asking nothing of their workers that they are not prepared to offer. A good leader can form a team of any diverse group and in the end, have a group of people who are willing to compete less and band together more to ensure that overall good health of the team and their projects. According to a study done by Caliper, a management consulting firm at Princeton, female leaders tend to be more assertive, more readily able to take risks and to ensure fruition of the project at hand. Further, they tend to be more persuasive and more empathetic. The leaders who have been well trained also tend to be more flexible. The one down side of female management seems to be that those who have not been well trained or are not well rounded may allow their leadership to cause them to be stifling of others and feel defensive of it to the point that it affects their leadership abilities. Natural leaders are able to see past this issue in many cases but those who have not been well trained and whose leadership has been recent may require more training in order to accomplish all that they can. They may require more time and more training to become accustomed to that position in order to move past the urge to defend it so stringently that they curtail the visions and the imagination of their workers. For this reason, leadership training is very important in any position--a fact which is true for both men and women.

Trying to be a one-man or one-woman show increases stress and rarely results in achieving all of the business goals. Good leaders work well with others. An open, friendly and positive approach is the key to success. Naturally, there should be discipline and well-established business ethics but better communication skills will always pay off.

In today's business world, competition is getting harder and harder. With the advancements in technology, whether you are a manager of a department or the CEO of a company, you have to stay on top of the proverbial game. As a woman, more opportunities are available to you now than ever. The larger companies appear to be a better workplace for the advancement of women at this time than the smaller companies. But the real challenge, is the competition. There are so many areas to advance and so many opportunities to help you make that advancement available. Taking your career to the next step is up to you. Remember to keep your vision in sight. It really doesn't matter if you are male or female, leaders typically are not born, but made. Leadership training programs are available to everyone, including the person that is already in the CEO positions. According to a recent study done by Stanford University 2013 Coaching Survey, approximately two-thirds of the present CEO's are not receiving any outside advice on their leadership skills, but would be receptive to leadership coaching. Conflict resolution seems to be the area that most would be interested in. What is the definition of leadership? It can be defined as a person's ability to get other people to willingly follow. If a person has the right character traits, they can certainly be nurtured. A leader not only needs to have vision but should also be able to share that vision with others and then act upon it. A really good leader can inspire others to pursue their vision. Leading others requires a person to be assertive, but not aggressive. These two are definitely not the same. In order to successfully lead others you must be able to clearly state what you expect so there will be no misunderstanding. Being assertive usually gets the desired results. Being under assertive or overassertive is often a problem among leaders. Always be fair and just when dealing with others. In order to be a good leader, you must check out the situation, the facts, and then listen to everyone before passing judgment. Be very thorough and do not jump to conclusions based on incomplete research. A form of power as a leader that is often forgotten or pushed to the wayside is humor. A good sense of humor is very important to relieve both boredom and tension. Humor can also at times effectively defuse hostility. The power to success does not come from intrinsic factors such as how you look, how tall you are or even how smart you are. Cultivating good leadership traits is what helps make a person a successful leader.
