Mifepristone and Misoprostol During Pregnancy
мифепристон мизопростол are two medications used to terminate a pregnancy. Although mifepristone and misoprostol are safe for women to take during pregnancy, there are certain groups who should avoid them. According to UptoDate, these groups include those with chronic adrenal failure, long-term use of corticosteroids, or ectopic pregnancy. Mifepristone is still safe for women to use during pregnancy if the procedure has been done under medical supervision.
One recent study evaluated the health outcomes of women who received mifepristone and misoprostol during their first pregnancy. It found that approximately 70 percent of women would use the drugs again, whereas 47% would not. Some women reported experiencing abdominal pain and cramping, and some women noted vaginal discharge, which could be a sign of infection. However, these complications are rare and can be treated using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antiemetics.
Women using the mifepristone/misoprostol regimen experienced abdominal cramping and bleeding. Those experiencing the most severe pain typically experienced it for around six hours. A woman should seek medical help if her pain is severe or persists for more than three days. Mifepristone and misoprostol are both effective for medical termination of a pregnancy, but they may lead to complications.
Women undergoing misoprostol were typically aged 18 to 29 years old. Nearly all of them had graduated from senior secondary school. Thirteen percent of women had some type of higher education. Among respondents, three-quarters had a job in a family business. Those who were married or cohabitating were more likely to use the medication than those who were unmarried or cohabiting. In addition, 95% of women who purchased misoprostol had a pregnancy test before obtaining the medication. And about eighty percent had used misoprostol for the first time.
While mifepristone and misoprostol are approved for medical abortion when given to women in the first trimester of pregnancy, the FDA still limits its availability. It must only be prescribed by a qualified prescriber and administered in certain health care settings. These restrictions are not supported by medical evidence and create barriers for the clinician. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is calling for the FDA to remove these restrictions.
The FDA approved GenBioPro, Inc.'s ANDA for a generic version of Mifepristone in April 2019. This approved alternative to Mifepristone is a therapeutically equivalent product and can be safely substituted for the FDA-approved brand. Mifepristone is approved to terminate an intrauterine pregnancy between seven and 70 days' gestation, but the patient must be removed from the intrauterine device before the drug is administered.
Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid that is used for medical termination of a pregnancy. It is available in two forms: mifeprex and Korlym. Mifepristone has no known side effects, but may cause adverse reactions in some women. This drug is considered a safe and effective treatment for early pregnancy. Mifepristone is also effective in treating hypercortisolism, a condition where excess cortisol interferes with a woman's reproductive organ.
