i ahh... made art for mercy on me by thirteengrins on ao3. which is a fic where 13 goes to therapy instead of going to space prison and YES it was posted in 2020, it’s just been on my mind for a while ok?  reasons to read this fic:

1. 13 gets a houseplant 

2. 13 wears a giant jumper

3. cathartic yet realistic emotional development that hit rather close to home hMmMm

I'm not at all upset by Dan interrupting Thirteen and Yaz and not because of those scenes in Eve, but because of the way Thirteen immediately smiles up when he walks in, because she'd let herself cry, she'd let herself be completely vulnerable for Yaz, and then she builds up her emotional mask and Yaz got to see it, she saw Thirteen put it on for Dan and it's to say - wordlessly because Thirteen sucks at talking whenever it comes to people's feelings especially her own - that this new openness and vulnerability is only for Yaz and only Yaz

I know there probably won’t be time to bring it up, but I wonder what Dan thinks of the change in Yaz when she’s around the Doctor. He who knows her far better than the Doctor, four years better, has followed her into deadly temple and deadly jungle and deadly tunnel. That she’s such a good leader, and decision maker, but around the Doctor she goes from lionheart to rabbit. And it’s not that the Doctor doesn’t know that, but her need for control because she feels so fundamentally unsafe, neuters the best of Yaz at every turn.

okay but this isn't the case of chibnall finally having guts! this is the case of chibnell setting up the most fucking devastating relationship ever that is integral to doctor who because yaz started off struggling with self confidence and unsure of her identity and the doctor taught her so much about all she can do and brought her to the point where she understands herself and who she is and 13 starts off reasonably open emotionally and ready to make connections only to slowly cut herself off because she knows the end is coming! And the way all this time 13 was waiting for yaz but not pushing (the "are you two dating?" "I don't know, are we?"), because she just wants her to grow and she knows how messy dating a companion can be, and the way by the time yaz is ready, the doctor's time is up, and her past has caught up with her and made her angry and closed off, and she *knows it* and tries to distance herself because she knows that her reciprocation will only make it worse when they say goodbye. This is literally the most doctor who plotline ever.

okay so my read on dan's whole interaction with this relationship between his friends is like. from his perspective he's just spent actual years watching yaz be in love with the absent doctor, & like, he's seen the ugly parts of it too, the way that yaz absolutely clings to this idea, this wild hope that she'll see the doctor again & that's sometimes the only thing that makes all of this worth it, so i feel like he knows that these feelings run deep, & to a degree that could most certainly be considered, uh, less than healthy. like this is not some harmless crush this is obviously a deeply important relationship for her

& then he spends like, a week with the both of them together & it rapidly becomes extremely clear that a) yaz hasn't ever said out loud that she has these feelings b) she is under the impression that no one else knows c) it is extremely unlikely that the doctor does not know but she's acting like she doesn't d) this situation is not healthy for yaz in the long run

so dan, as a reasonably emotionally mature older person & yaz's friend, has now set himself this mission of trying to help her out of this mess. starts by getting her to confront & acknowledge her own feelings & being supportive about it, as any good friend would, & then talking to the other party & going "hey. this girl is in love with you & we both know you know. you can't just pretend that it isn't happening, bc that is going to hurt her in the long run. stop ignoring this"

so despite the phrasing used, i don't think this is at all a middle school situation of "omg my friend likes you so you two should totally get together!!" i think this is a very deliberate effort on his part to get these two to accept the situation they're in & have a conversation about it, whatever the outcome of that conversation may be. he just wants them to communicate. like adults

really what i want most from thasmin is just, a close-up of their hands as the doctor reaches for yaz in some moment of high stakes and no solutions or risky solutions where before the doctor would go stand in front of the others and yaz takes her hand in a gesture of we've got this in contrast to the doctor's 'ive got this, i'll fix this' and the doctor lets yaz stand beside her and lets her share the responsibility and then they defeat the bad guy this is what i want this is all i really want

Seriously though… Does this genuinely make Gat an actual companion? Lee obviously was, Karvanista was by his own admission and the only part of this quartet not spoken for is dead because the doctor killed her and she was her Companion and the doctor murdered their companion on screen and We Didn’t Know and damn I need All the back story of Gat Right Now
