“ It’s alright commander, the pleasure it’s mine; not many of your countrymen would actually bother with even trying ”   she replies, a little amused at how easily he gets flustered   “ It’s formal greeting. It literally means ‘enter this place in peace’. It’s a way to say we want no trouble with the person in front of us ”   she explains, far more patiently than she thought herself capable, perhaps due the fact he’s actually the first human she has ever encountered that has actually tried to learn their language without ulterior motives.

She looks at the board again, the game it’s clearly on but the man has been clearly playing by himself. Her hand extend to the piece he should move next without even thinking, but she stops herself millimeters before touching it. She tries to find his eyes before proceeding.   “ May I? ”

“I know how to say thank you,” he said, a quick attempt to bridge the gap between them. “Ma serannas,” he said proudly, a little smile curving up. He filed away her translation and nodded. “Well then. Andaran atish’an to you as well,” he said, stuttering just a bit on the pronunciation. He smiled fully to drive his point home. He wasn’t that bad, but he was no native speaker.

“Of course you may. It gets boring only playing myself all the time. And when Dorian is occupied, I must occupy myself.” He realized how weird that sounded, so he added (totally not making it weirder), “with chess. Occupy myself with chess.”

She was going to surprise her big brother, she’d snuck into his office while he’d been at some war room meeting. She tucked herself away waiting for him to come back. She waited for the right moment when he had his back to the wall, her hands covered his eyes and she giggled. “Guess who, Commander.” 

He was startled for a moment, but the giggle told him exactly who it was. He smiled wide and easy. He was so grateful for his sister. Eternally grateful.

“Hmm. Let me...think.” He knew just what to do to make her laugh. “Jim? Is that you? It has to be Jim. No one’s hands are as soft as his.”

“He enjoys it.” Even if he didn’t do anything with them, or maybe he did, Bull enjoyed the attention. Where Dorian enjoyed attention more than probably anyone there was a point where he had to excuse himself. There wasn’t a truly polite way to tell a woman he was repulsed at the idea of doing anything more than speaking with her. “Of course they do!” Dorian laughed, the fact that he almost sounded surprised that people liked him. “The strapping commander of the Inquisition, a golden lion!” 

The words struck him even in his drunken state, ‘even men’ he shouldn’t have been surprised at the comment. Most other men didn’t enjoy that attention. “Well that is rather bold, but Orlesians put on those masks and they are invincible.” In Ferelden it wasn’t something well liked, and he was truly a Ferelden man. “Some men are more adventurous in my experience.” if he was sober he’d have been more careful in his words. “Some play a more subtle game.”

Cullen’s next question was a distraction, something to pull away from the conversation about men and flirting. Perhaps he knew the reason Dorian enjoyed spending so much time with him. That thought wasn’t a pleasant one, but he’d not sent him away yet. “I miss parts of it. It has potential.” downing the rest of his drink he stared at the now empty glass. “There are also things there I wish to avoid. People.” His father, his desire to use blood magic to change him. Usually he’d have much more to say on the matter. He missed Tevinter he truly did. But his mind could only focus on that now.

“Does he now?” Cullen breathed, watching Dorian with interest. Watching Dorian speak was such a lovely experience that he couldn’t really put it into words. So he just watched, observing the way Dorian complimented him. A golden lion. Was that truly how Dorian saw him? He flushed and smiled. “A golden lion...You flatter me, Dorian.”

Cullen snorted though at the mention of Orlesians and their masks. “Orlesians walk into a room, with or without their masks, and they feel invincible.” Cullen never liked Orlesians. Never. They’ve always been too...Orlesian.

And before he could stop it, Cullen let loose a question that made his ears burn after. “And what about you, Dorian? What game are you playing?” He stared at Dorian for a long time, eyes dragging along his features slowly. Then he looked just slightly away, listening to Dorian speak of his home. Of what he missed.

“You miss the good parts. It’s only natural. I miss my family. I don’t miss the arguments Bran and I would get into, but I miss certain people. I miss...Honnleath. I...” He glanced down at his drink and stood up, shedding his cloak to get rid of the heat building up in his body. He glanced out of his window, hoping the chill leaking in would soothe him.

Cullen smiled. He preferred talking about people he loved. Didn’t have to be romantic love. But it could be any love. And he had plenty to give. “I try to show it through protection. I protect those I love, and...my siblings say it comes out as over-protectiveness, but it’s from a good place.”

Dorian had managed to flee the tavern after a few drinks, usually he’d have stayed but there were too many people who he’d rather not bother with. He’d play the part of dashing playboy, and well there was an amount of truth in that, but he’d ducked out before he was confronted with another proposition he’d have to refuse. 

Of course he’d ended up outside of Cullen’s door, not the smartest idea he’d had. He’d probably do better avoiding the man for a while but his half drunken mind was convinced this was the best place to be. When Cullen agreed to share a drink with him and entertain his growing drunkenness he’d decided he’d made the right choice.

“See.” he sat up, “I have become a master in the art of avoidance. Especially the avoidance of… persistent women.” The only woman he’d been bad at avoiding was his mother. “And I will let you in on a secret. These Orlesian, and other women who… act as if they grace the world by existing.” That was his territory, “Have a very, very interesting attraction to Iron Bull!” And Cullen. But it was his own unwarranted selfishness that stopped him from pushing things his way. 

Cullen watched Dorian with half lidded eyes.  A lazy smile curled on the Commander’s lips as he watched the way Dorian sat there in front of him. His hair was always so perfect that Cullen wanted to constantly just...muss it up. He really did. But as always, he refrained, opting instead to just stare at him.

“So you’re saying...I should just...push them off on Bull.” He frowned. “They like me too though. Every single dignitary, even some of the men have come on to me. One lord pinched my...well...” Cullen blushed at the thought. It had been more than a bit degrading. He preferred more subtle flirting anyhow.

He glanced down at his drink, finishing it and sitting it on his desk. “Do you miss Tevinter?” Cullen asked suddenly, trying to shift the conversation away from flirtations and such. His drunk mind told him to ask Dorian something about coming on to him, but his sober conscience told him to move on.

Cullen tried to stifle a laugh, curling up in his chair and peering over at Dorian from across the way. He should have refused the alcohol that was offered. He should have said ‘no, let’s just play chess as we always do’, but instead, he said yes to the alcohol and was now pleasantly buzzed with his dear Dorian.

His cheeks flushed at that thought. His dear Dorian. He liked the sound of it. He’d gotten used to their talks and visits. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do when the Inquisition disbanded and Dorian went back to Tevinter and Cullen went back to South Reach.

He didn’t want to think of that. So, instead, he inquired further.

“So, how in the world did you escape Magister Valeria and her wandering hands?”

I prefer the latter, so, I would bring The Iron Bull. I trust him as far as I can throw him, but he’d be good in battle. For a rogue, Ellisa ( @trevelyanenforcer ). She’s...tactical.” And a bit pretty, but he omitted that.
