i LOVE this analysis!
IDK about you, but I was super pissed with Aelin in KoA. Although the trauma was well-depicted, it wasn't as good as in ACOMAF and her sassy scenes seemed really strange. Also pissed about Yrene destroying a certain someone after building up to a clash between Aelin and Erawan. I love Yrene, but she was a character introduced just in ToD. Also, Something about Yrene destroying *spoiler* while pregnant felt like SJM had done a self-insert of herself, which makes me very uneasy. Just my opinion.
I think that part of why her sassiness was lower and felt off was because she was essentially faking it to cover up her trauma. That’s pretty explicit in the text, and the old Aelin is pretty much…not there anymore. She survives, but its with the burden of that trauma, which she will have forever. She learns to manage it and how to cope, and how to be happy despite it, but SJM depicts the way trauma continues to impact us even after we heal very authentically. So…I can’t really be annoyed? Like I missed Aelin in KoA, but I also wouldn’t enjoy SJM having Aelin recover easily and be her old self. She committed to the plot and the character arc and I respect that.
I don’t think that Erawan and Aelin was ever really building to a big show down? Dorian and Erawan- yeah, and that happened. But Aelin’s more direct enemies were always the King of Adarlan and Maeve. So it makes sense that Yrene and Dorian take down Erawan
I love Yrene, and think it’s really important that we see a healer, a refugee, and a woman of color defeat one of the world’s biggest evils. It really solidifies the message that it takes more than one woman to win, and that helping one another as Aelin helps Yrene in the assassin and the healer (Yrene is introduced in the first book) can change the world. Small kindness = big impact.
I mean idk, SJM likes kids and wants to write about them. Why shouldn’t she want to see a pregnant lady kick ass and destroy erawan? i don’t have an issue with self insert because most of it came about because women and minorities weren’t seeing themselves represented. So. Whatever!

A new decade brings new possibilities and opportunities. Rarely do the stars align so perfectly. Even the moon sings of great triumphs in the new years. You are not alone, you are brave, you will be free at last. Overcome your fears. Understand that there is no going back, only forward. Obliterate all thoughts of a negative self image. Keep these things in mind, and you will prosper. A bright spark for a bright girl. You have so much love to give, and this is your decade, so own it. -AL

i will NEVER understand people like this. out of all the things they could do with their time, they decided to tear a stranger down over the internet.
they’re entirely wrong: i’m a native english speaker and i mess up on grammar sometimes. not having english as your first language is a perfectly acceptable reason to be messing up on things. english is a very difficult language and it’s incredible that you speak it as well as you do!!!
and as for your writing in general: please don’t ever think you’re not good enough bc some ass over the internet targeted you. that has nothing to do with your writing and everything to do with them. keep up your awesome writing and don’t let them bring you down! they’re not worth it. your fics are wonderful and we’re so blessed that you share them with us. thank you! 💙

A comment I got on Ordinary. On the first chapter.
If a writing style is unpleasant to read, don't read that person's work. I have heard nothing but positive feedback and constructive criticism from friends and people in my class. This, however, feels like correcting me and then bashing my story and my style of writing. If you don't have constructive criticism to give, or anything nice to say, don't comment.
If a writing style, trope, cliche, etc is overused and unpleasant to read in your eyes. Don't read it.
Ordinary may be a cliche story, but this comment appeared on chapter one. One. Not the last chapter. This either shows they didn't bother to read any further or they did and went back to chapter one.
I thanked them on correcting my drunk/drank error but English is not my first language. I will make grammar mistakes. I also told them to not read my stories if it's unpleasant to read them due to my style. Everyone has their own style.

i don’t usually comment on these kind of things but i feel this needs to be said:
it doesn’t matter what her intentions were, sjm killing nehemia was a racist act. she’s a white writer and probably wasn’t aware, but that doesn’t make nehemia’s death any less racist. also at the time of her death, nehemia was the only poc in the series.
plus her death being the catalyst for aelin doesn’t make it any better? if anything it’s just as anon said, killing a poc so that the white protagonist can keep moving forward. like no thanks. if you can’t do that without killing minorities, you need more awareness as a writer.
don’t get me wrong; i love tog and sjm. but i feel its very important to call out racism when it’s present. in a way the backlash (as in people calling her out on it) may have been what encouraged sjm to write more poc and include more diversity. being critical isn’t always a bad thing.
Nehemia didn’t deserve to die just to help Aelin’s character progression. I personally like the series but the fact that one of the only POC character got killed off just so that the main blonde, white character’s story could progress is very wrong and something that the author completely overlooked.
I consulted my resident tog expert @highqueenofelfhame and I think that sjm probably didn’t do that purposefully, but it is unfortunate that a main poc character (and an important and interesting one at that) got killed off. BUT, her death really was a very important plot point, and though I wish she hadn’t died it really wasn’t a throwaway death, it affected aelin significantly for a long time. so I have mixed feelings on this, but I do wish we had gotten more time with her because she was a queen
#oof#i rly don’t like confrontation#but this just really pisses me off#there’s no excuse for racism#ever.#sjm#sjm critical#tog#tog critical
