“Nojima confirmed Cloud and Aerith lovers in 4 languages!”
If you’re a cloti, clack, aerti, or just a casual FF7 fan odds are you have heard this or seen this pop-up everywhere. Well…the more you know…right? (The Spanish version got released.)
Case of the Lifestream: White is written from Aerith’s point of view. Not Nojima’s point of view. It’s third person limited. Nojima is the author of the story but Aerith is the one whose thoughts and feelings are coming through. Not Nojima’s.
“Well, so far I’ve only seemed to have talked about techniques, but what I paid the most attention to was trying to not let my personal opinions come through because it’s a novel. I had to remember that I couldn’t let it end up as an “I-Novel.” Cloud is Cloud. Yuffie is Yuffie. I had to keep in mind that this isn’t me. Especially when I was writing late at night (laughs). “ -Nojima Interview about OTWTAS hosted on SE’s website, 2009.

People have been saying “case of the lifestream white is third person limited from Aerith’s perspective” for a long time, but in 2019 there’s still claims of “Nojima confirmed it! It’s Nojima’s thoughts!” well here you go. Nojima’s official statement on the novellas, which are written in third person limited from the respective characters point of view. (Sephiroth, Aerith, Barret, Tifa, Denzel, Yuffie, and Nanaki)
Not stopping there, Nojima, the author, promotes and supports the English translation of the novellas. You know the one that says:
Cloud was her friend. More than a friend, for she had loved him.
