Where it all began.
She’d been on her mind for days now. A Miqo’te, much like Aylin herself, although she was quite a bit taller and of Sun Clan descent unlike Aylin’s Moon Clan heritage. She had tanned skin, hair the color of the clear sky, and midnight blue eyes, slitted in the typical way of her clan. A fellow Scion, and an ever present party member during her missions. She was strong, impressively so, not only physically but in spirit as well. Aylin seemed to be the only one that could match that strength, and as a result they found themselves gravitating towards one another often. She eventually came to find out that her name was Kaylas Yatsu, and she possessed the echo, much like Aylin herself.
In battle they were an unstoppable force. For all of Kaylas’s strength as a Dark Knight, Aylin was just as competent as a White Mage. Never before had she felt so determined to keep someone safe. As a healer, there was always a sense of urgency during battles. However, that feeling was tripled while watching over Kaylas on the field. Regardless of the difficulty level of the mission, Aylin had taken to checking on blue haired woman after their objectives were complete. She found herself offering to take care of even the most minor wounds that her magic had missed, and Kaylas always accepted with a smile.
She had an accent Aylin couldn’t quite place, and she had to admit that she found it quite alluring. If she was being completely honest with herself, there wasn’t much about Kaylas that she didn’t find alluring. Aesthetically, she was a sharp contrast to Aylin herself. All long legs and striking features in comparison to Aylin’s smaller stature and soft, delicate appearance. Aylin found herself lost in Kaylas’s beauty on more than one occasion. Personality wise, it felt like they were made for each other. When Aylin felt too shy or overwhelmed with the group, Kaylas’s warm and friendly demeanor was a comfort to her. Over time, they developed a companionship that she cherished. Yet Aylin couldn’t explain the way her stomach flipped and her heart fluttered whenever she looked at Kaylas, something that never happened with her other comrades. And the purring. It was all she could do to control it enough so that Kaylas wouldn’t hear it.
After a rather long day, Aylin found herself sipping on wine and relaxing with Y’shtola in the tavern outside their headquarters. “Oh my, isn’t he quite handsome?” Y’shtola suddenly said, nudging Aylin and gesturing towards the entryway. Aylin followed her gaze, finding herself unimpressed with the Elezen gentleman who had just walked in. She shrugged, opening her mouth to reply to her friend when she noticed a certain blue haired Miqo’te enter in after him, chatting with one of their party members from earlier that day. Aylin’s eyes followed her movements, her mouth still partially open as whatever it was she was going to say had all but vanished from her mind.
“Oh I see. Someone else has already caught your eye, hm? Mayhap you should go and talk to her, Aylin,” Y’shtola encouraged, giving her another nudge accompanied by a sly wink. Aylin felt her face grow warm, but she nodded and stood anyways before making her way over to her comrade. The man Kaylas had entered with was talking to her enthusiastically, clearly making an effort to impress her. Aylin felt her courage begin to wane, until Kaylas spotted her. She couldn’t help but notice the way the taller girl’s face lit up upon seeing her, and her belly fluttered at the realization. Kaylas waved her over, immediately pulling her into a tight hug and making Aylin blush.
Aylin didn’t miss the way Kaylas’s hands lingered on her waist for a moment as they parted, and her heart raced as the taller girl gazed at her softly and lifted a hand to gently brush a strand of lilac hair out of Aylin’s face. “It’s good to see you, little one,” Kaylas said quietly, mouth curved up in a sweet smile. Aylin felt her face grow even hotter at the term of endearment, her eyes flickering to Kaylas’s lips for a second before she forced them back up to look her in the eyes. She returned her smile and nodded.
“It’s always a pleasure, Kaylas,” Aylin replied. There was an ever present tension between them, although it wasn’t completely unpleasant. It felt like the air before a summer storm, warm and mellow but slowly shifting to something a bit more intense. As Kaylas’s dark blue gaze subtly swept down her form, Aylin felt goosebumps raise across her skin. She suddenly knew, in that moment, that this woman would be her endgame. She had never been so sure of anything in her life.
Neither of them noticed the man clear his throat awkwardly before eventually walking away, too distracted by whatever spell had overcome them. “Would you care to take a walk with me?” Kaylas asked, voice low so that only Aylin could hear her.
“I would like that very much,” the shorter girl responded. She felt Kaylas’s hand brush the small of her back as she guided her to the door and out into the Aetheryte plaza of Mor Dhona. Elsewhere in the tavern, Y’shtola was watching with a satisfied smirk. “Thank the Twelve. It’s about time,” she muttered to herself as she took another sip of her drink.
The night was warm and the plaza was mostly empty, a few lingering adventurers passing by as they made their way to their inns for the night. The two women walked out of the sanctuary, into a clearing where their view of the night sky was unhindered. Midway, Aylin grew confident enough to slip her hand into Kaylas’s. The taller girl looked down at her in surprise for a moment, before smiling brightly and intertwining her fingers with Aylin’s. They strolled quietly for a few minutes, before coming to a stop in front of a small overlook.
Kaylas released her hand and Aylin turned her attention from the starry night sky to look at her. She was close, closer than she had ever been, and in the light of the moon Aylin took note of the small blue mark adorning her left cheekbone, almost blending in with the darker striping. She reached up slowly, before cupping Kaylas’s cheek and running her thumb over the mark affectionately. “I like this,” Aylin whispered, finger still gently tracing the stripe. Kaylas tilted her head, face leaning into Aylin’s palm.
“And I like you,” Kaylas replied quietly. Aylin was well aware that she was purring loud enough for Kaylas to hear at this point, but she found that she didn’t care anymore. “I’ve always thought that you look so beautiful in the moonlight,” Kaylas said, voice barely above a whisper as her eyes traced over Aylin’s features before lingering on her lips. She slid her hands around Aylin’s waist, pulling her even closer so that their bodies were flush against each other.
Aylin’s hand left Kaylas’s face to slide around her neck and entangle in the back of her hair. She raised herself up as the blue haired girl leaned down, meeting her halfway and pressing their lips together softly. She could feel Kaylas’s chest vibrating against hers, although her purring was less audible than Aylin’s. The kiss was gentle and sweet, and they parted after a short moment.
Kaylas gazed down at her almost heatedly, and Aylin was sure her own expression was much the same. She leaned up, wrapping both arms around her neck and pulling the taller woman back down to kiss her again. She deepened the kiss this time, opening her mouth as Kaylas responded in kind. Their tongues traced each other, tasting and savoring as they enjoyed the slow but intense kiss. She ignored the heat building in her belly, content to enjoy this moment with the woman she had been longing for. After a long moment, they were forced to part for air. Kaylas leaned her forehead against Aylin’s as they panted, still gripping each other tightly.
“You’ve no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” Kaylas breathed, lips just centimeters from Aylin’s.
“Far too long,” Aylin replied in agreement. Kaylas pressed one, then two more short kisses to Aylin’s lips before standing up straight. Aylin’s arms left her neck to wrap around her middle, head fitting perfectly against her shoulder. She had never felt more at home.

Meanwhile, back at the tavern, a few of the Scions were busy placing bets on when the two would be wed. According to Thancred, it would be at least two years while Y’shtola was adamant it would take a single year. Imagine their surprise when three short months later the women would be bearing new wristlets, and Tataru would be claiming her prize money with glee.
