Why did I make this blog?
Well, other than for a grade, I’d say I made this blog in order to help newcomers who are want to get in fighting games and don’t know know where to start. Whether it’d be for the competitive nature of the games or the communities surrounding them, this place should be a good place to start with. I’ve been a fighting game fan for a long time and I’m always eager to introduce others to this genre and see if they gain interest in it afterwards.

The Different Types of Fighting Games
Fighting games come in all shapes and sizes. The genre offers a wide array of options when it comes to games to play and there is bound to be something for everyone. But they all also have certain characteristics that make them unique and help lure players to play others games. So below I’m going to go over the basic characteristics of fighting games and the sub-categories within that space.
“Classic” 2D-Fighter
- Horizontal Play (X-axis movement mostly)
- Not much jumping
- Emphasis on spacing and “footsies”
- Examples: Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat
"Airdashers”/Anime Games
- Similar to 2D-Fighters, but have a wider area of play for vertical game-play
- Lots of Air-dashing/Super-Jumps
- Usually have more complicated systems and mechanics
- Examples: Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Persona 4 Arena
3D-Fighters
- Movement on an X, Y, and Z axis
- Jumping is very rare
- Lots of sidestepping and dodging
- Examples: Tekken, Soulcalibur, Virtua Fighter

Who created the Fighting Game genre?
The fighting game genre had to go through many iterations before getting to it’s modern form. Sega is credited with having made the first game with hand-to-hand fighting in 1976, with a title called Heavyweight Champ, which was a two player boxing game with a side-view perspective.

While Heavyweight Champ is the first game to feature hand-to-hand fighting, the fighting game genre was first popularized by Technōs Japan Corporation’s 1984 game Karate Champ. Karate Champ was the first game to feature the best-of-three matches format that is common in fighting games today and even had a training bonus stage.

And finally, in 1987 Capcom released it’s first competitive fighting game, and the beginning of one of their biggest franchises, Street Fighter. This game introduced the six button control scheme that is commonplace in most fighting games today and included command-based move for it’s playable characters. They later released a sequel, Street Fighter II, which expanded on these ideas and included more playable characters who each had very unique move lists.
