Newbie at Simon Fraser University
The view of a ceiling decorated with red & blue balloons and a table full of fancy snacks was my point of entry to the 2016 open house at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Vancouver campus! Being a new student at SFU, it was great to walk right into a showcase of faculties and programs after my digital marketing class. Visiting with the innovators from SFU Venture Connection, program staff and students from the School of Public Policy, as well as students who participated in Semester in Dialogue, gave me the opportunities to talk about my new relationship with the university.
While SFU president Andrew Petter thanked the audience for attending and showered them with the latest update on the newly opened graduate residences and innovation centre in downtown Vancouver, volunteers were busy with covering the event on social networks.
Social networks are playing a significant role in building connections for individuals and communities. My personal use of Facebook and Twitter has fundamentally changed the way I maintain contact with people, particularly those I have met in person. In addition, Facebook is the primary portal in which I manage communications with people who are outside of my geographic vicinity.  I look forward to having additional networks in my social portfolio, and building engaging communities for organizations.
Social media not only provides a channel for people to connect among each other, it can also attract people to brands. The Lululemon blog is a great example of viewer engagement through life style and philosophical messages in images and videos.
