It's the kind of soft and earnest thing that slips out after hours, when the case is closed and the boys have left, leaving the two of them alone: the writer and his muse; the detective and her loyal, if self-appointed, sidekick.

Contrary to what most would think upon meeting him ( at least when it comes to speaking out loud whatever's on his heart and mind ), it doesn't come easy to Castle, saying things like that, showing his more vulnerable side.

Usually, whenever he catches it slipping through the cracks, Rick hastily covers whatever vulnerability is shown with some "macho talk" — it's a knee jerk reaction at this point.

But lately, he's found himself less and less wiling to ruin the moment, too distracted by the beauty of the smiles Beckett gives him — sometimes small, sometimes big, sometimes tired, sometimes sad, but always genuine and too beautiful for words — in response and the fact that he would never be able to translate them into words, not even with the way he has with them, to care about covering up.

Tonight is no exception as instead of making some vaguely suggestive comment that would have made her roll her eyes, Castle only smiles — small, soft, humble and proud at the same time — when he sees the tiny smile on Kate's lips, mentally punching the air for a job well done ( Kate Beckett has been a m y s t e r y to him since the moment she marched into his world and made it revolve around herself without even trying, a mystery he is self-aware enough to admit he doesn't have much hope of ever solving... and yet, every time he makes her smile feels like a step in the right directon ).

“ At this rate, I might finish it by the end of the month, ” he punctuates the due date with a lift of his eyebrows, smile so smug and yet the tone too affectionate to fool anyone, least of all detective Beckett, into thinking it's anything but a compliment to his muse ( after all, he did say she inspires him more than he has been in a very long while )... and then he gets cold feet, the compliment, the general tone of conversation too earnest for him to bear, so he follows it up with a playful comment, narrowing his eyes at her slightly as if he can see right through her ( if only ), “ Unless you want to draw out the pleasure, Detective?.. ”

for all the times he'd left her frustrated and exasperated, the detective couldn't find it in herself to come up with some sharp retort or response. after all, he was still one of her favorite authors, despite the peek she had behind the curtain. and now that the big, stressful cases were mostly handled and put away, she didn't mind his excitement as much.

' so can we expect a new nikki heat novel by the end of the year? ' a tiny smile crossed beckett's lips as she leaned back on her desk.

“ No, you don't, ” the response is hot on the heels of her own words, sure, self-confident in that way she might pretend to find annoying but he hopes knows she secretly finds quite endearing, coupled with a slight shake of his head ( as if he sees no point in spending too much energy on refuting an explanation so ridiculous ), “ Cops work in teams. ”

A small smile warms his eyes as he inclines his head towards the board they are usually gathered around when they are working on a case, offering their own team as an example, aiming for a cocky 'i know better than that, I see cops working every day now, I am a part of the team' but it's softened by the very same thought, the one that momentarily distracts him from their battle of wills: he's a part of the team now.

Aaaand he's back in the game.

“ Or, they work with a partner, ” the smile grows and the confidence is back, Castle stresses the word 'partner' as if it was an innuendo, and it's not and it is at the same time, because he doesn't mean anything inappropriate, not this time around, but he does mean himself as her self-proclaimed partner.

“ The point is, they never work alone. Unless it's the cops gone rogue we are talking about, but they exist more in fiction than real life... right? ”

In spite of what most people - detective Beckett very much included - think of him, he does know when to stop himself, so instead of pushing her further for an answer that would be more truthful, Castle himself turns their conversation into a different direction, innocent confusion on his face as he jokes about rogue cops ( who would think he was actually letting her off the hook in a manner almost too tactful for the man he seems to be? ).

And when she tries to push him away - the scorn on her face and the sigh and the dismissal in her words all too clear - he nods and gets up, as if, for once, he does listen to her when she tells him what to do...

...only to return a few minutes later with two cups of coffee in his hands and make himself at home in the chair beside her desk once again, holding one cup out to her as a peace offering.

“ I am working on my new book as we speak, ” he reminds her, matter-of-factually, as if it's not an excuse for him to be there as flimsy as her attempt at deflecting his question was, lifting a notebook out of his pocket for her to see, “ I'm doing research for my new character, ” before putting it back and taking a sip of his coffee.

After all, not pushing further in no way means backing down.

If she decides to open up, he will be there.

why do you always assume you're on your own?

The more I think about Richard Castle, the more sad I get, because he has so many masks, so many personas, so many things he tries to be for so many people - a son for Martha, a father/best friend/confidante for Alexis, a partner ( in every sense of the word ) for Kate... and don't even get me started on his public persona, that's like, tailormade for what his fans expect him to be - that I'm not sure he himself knows who he really is.

He doesn't know how to be himself.

More than that, he is most likely scared of trying to find out, or scared of what he might find out, which is why he holds so tightly onto those masks I mentioned above, and when for this or that reason a distance grows between him and one person ( like his daughter growing up, or all his 'break-ups' with Kate, like the end of S2 ), he doubles down on other relationships, other masks.
