I’m listening to a podcast interview (Boston Arts podcast) with the artist at this very moment so that’s why I’ve chosen him. I didn’t know about him until 10 mins ago tbh.
This artwork is a part of a whole exhibition of 70 similar works titled #dutchfakes. The artist likes to think about how “history could have played out differently”, portraying alternate histories within his works. This interest expands into a number of elements, from the “ancient alien theory” (Erich von Däniken) to adapting children’s stories. Stating that these writers and theorists inspired him by bringing “fresh life to now accepted standards”
I was just really drawn to how small and intricate the artworks are and the juxtaposition between all the elements.

Cy Twombly
Untitled (Roses)
2008
Acrylic and crayon on wood
741.9 x 252.5 cm
——info——
I saw this painting on my one day in Munich at Museum Brandhorst. It was a part of a whole exhibition about flowers, A MONET WAS THERE ! It was such a cool museum and I got in w like €2 bc I’m a student.
ANYWAYS! Inspired by artists concepts of nature, Twombly highlights their ideas of “natures domination by its inevitable demise”. The motif of flowers, particularly roses, reference the conditions of the natural world “alluding to the pleasure and transience of life”.
I don’t really know too much about this work without doing a lot of research, I largely chose it for today because I like how it looks and adored that exhibition in Germany.

Keith Haring Mural (Collingwood mural)
Keith Haring
1984
Collingwood, Melbourne
—- info ——
I REALLY like Keith Haring art and I’ve gone to see this mural twice now (that’s me in the second image I promise). This mural doesn’t really have a name, similarly to a lot of Harings work, but it’s often referred to as the Collingwood mural bc that’s where it is ! It’s also the only original Haring mural in Melbourne which is VERY exciting.
There’s no proper artistic analysis I can do of this artwork, so I’m just gonna give you all some facts about it. This mural was one of the public artworks that Haring did during his 3 weeks here in ‘84, the other notable piece he did was painting the waterwall at the NGV.
In 2004 it was added to the Victorian heritage register, due to its beloved inclusion in melbournes cultural landscape. And there is also an arts conservation plan to keep it as presentable as possible !

Franziska Furter
Switzerland born 1972
Liquid skies/Gyrwynt
2023 wool
National Gallery of Victoria
———info——— (this one’s a bit longer than usual, I have a lot to say 🗣️ 🖼️)
Finally an artwork that isn’t in a frame !! And it was created recently!! I know my photo of the piece isn’t that great but I mainly wanted to show people interacting w it and some of the works around it.
This artwork was so interesting to me, not just its look and meaning, but also the curating of it in relation to the pieces around it (I’m also a curating student).
At its most basic description Furter depicts the heat maps of multiple hurricanes and cyclones across the world. (The title of the artwork is Hurricane in Welsh). Obviously the main thing that draws the viewers attention to this work is the variety of vibrant colours that swirl across the large rug. BUT, something that enhances this colourful effect is the dark, blue and grey cloudy storm artworks that surround it.
The paintings are largely from the 1800’s, and almost exclusively depict big ships in big storms ⛈️. And while Franz also portrays big storms, she brings a contemporary perspective to the theme. Demonstrating the progression of art over time and drawing a comparison to how artists depict big storms ! (And society’s understanding and connection to weather recording, but more importantly Big Storms)
Fun fig fact ! When I went to see this artwork, I also attended a talk about weather, particularly rain, in relation to art (was very interesting, and I got to sit on Furters art piece 😧)

Hi !!
I’m fig, an art history student who honestly just needed a place to put all their art info and photos
I recently just finished a unit on Australian art, and also visited Italy for university - so a large portion of my initial artworks are gonna be from those classes.
But I am always interacting with art so the chances of me writing about a piece I JUST saw are very high !
Ok that’s all ! Enjoy !

Grace Cossington Smith
“Interior in yellow” 1962-64
Gadigal Nura/Sydney
oil on composition board
——-info ——- (some analysis, some fig rambling)
I went to see the exhibition this artwork was apart of at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery with my grandad a little while back. The exhibition was a smaller showing of the NGA’s Know My Name show. I’m not gonna go too deeply into Know My Name rn but in essence it exhibited a range of Australian women artists as a way of retelling Australian art history. (Look it up it’s pretty interesting! Lots of debate)
Anyways ! Cossington Smith not only has a great name but also has painted a beautiful painting of her bedroom. While her previous interior paintings were muted, emphasising the privacy of the space, this bright, yellow and joyous painting depicted the light seeping into her bedroom through the open window. In short this is C.S’s depiction of the cultural shift happening around her, as women’s spaces began to extend to the outdoors (previously women artists often only painted interiors), the outside began to have access to these more private spaces.

Tom Roberts
Evening, when the quiet east flushes faintly at the sun's last look 1887-88
50.8 x 76.4 cm
oil on canvas
National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne
———- info ! ————
I wrote an essay about this artwork recently for class so it’s on my mind (plus it’s my header image)
Compared to other paintings of Australian landscape at the time, this is a lot happier and brighter. Often artists painted with a more melancholy approach, their fears of this unknown land being expressed in their dark, cold works. Instead, Robert’s has demonstrated his welcoming and hopeful belief for the future of white settlement in Australia. The lone, tall tree is a representation of himself, alone but standing tall and strong, towering and dominating over the natural land.
There is plenty more I could write about this work (and I have) but I’ll leave it here for now !
