Once a year, the world shines a little brighter than normal. On New Year's Eve, people pour into the streets donning their best rhinestones, sequins, and glitter. On this particular New Year’s, icy roads reflected blurry images of bar signs and blue halos from passing headlights. Tucked away in a corner of this city stood a small establishment. The building was square and non-descript, but people were filtering in and out despite its unassuming nature. The small space held just a few long tables, all filled with party goers excitedly mingling. The front wall resembled a garage door, with glass panes stretching across the length. The temperature on the inside caused the marbled glass to become foggy as it met the cold surface. The faded image of initials above a heart appeared through the cloudiness as a reminder of lovers long gone.
Almost every square foot of the bar was taken by someone excitedly waiting to greet the new year. The table closest to the door was taken by a group of young friends, excitedly holding various props and cracking jokes. In the back corner behind the DJ, three people sat, talking in hushed tones that were quickly absorbed by the shadows. A man at the bar stood alone, craning his neck over the crowd searching for a companion for the night. Along the glass wall in the front, a couple stood. The man was tall, his brown curly hair bobbing over the heads of the people around him. He wore a faded orange button down of soft linen that swished around his torso. His pants were a soft cream color that resembled a painter’s canvas. A strand of colorful beads adorned his neck. In front of the man stood a woman. The top of head stood higher than the man’s, in part due to the sky-high heels strapped to her feet. Unlike the chromatic man, she wore all black. The tendrils of her dark hair fell onto a thin turtleneck and her pleated black mini skirt swung as she moved. The pair had made their way to a small, empty space on the bar floor. Though this establishment was not designed to accommodate much, the man was moving with the music, excitedly dancing to the songs blaring from the speakers. At first, his companion looked around uncomfortably at the crowd, unsure of trying to move in the tight thrall of people. The orange clad man continued his motions though, clearly unbothered by the lack of other dancers. The pair gazed into each other’s eyes for a moment, and just like that, the girl held her head up high and began to dance.
The pair was hypnotic to watch. Their towering frames moved effortlessly together. The man swung his hips to the beat and let his body follow. The woman swayed with him, matching his motions with her own. Despite the bustle of people milling around them, they stayed connected. As the pair continued to dance through song after song, their faces glowed with joy. The man pulled the woman close and whispered in her ear a few times, an act so intimate that the other party goers had to turn their heads away. The pair’s magnetic movements had cast a spell over the crowd. All throughout the crowded bar, strangers peered around shoulders so they might catch a glimpse of the dancers. The couple only had eyes for each other, paying no mind to the suddenly inspired crowd of people joining them to dance. The trance-inducing tango crackled with energy between the two. If you looked hard enough, you might have been able to see apricot-colored bolts of lightning jumping off them. Glowing threads weaved through the onlookers, intertwining with the sequined material of party dresses. Even as the clock struck midnight, the duo kept swaying along to the music, their eyes never leaving each other.
This New Year’s Eve sparkled just a little bit more than normal. On this night, as people started to disperse, their minds were captured by the mysterious couple who had danced the night away. As groups walked away, they wondered where the couple would go once the evening was over. Were they long time lovers who would return to their shared home? Or were they strangers who would go their separate ways when the street split? As the onlookers discussed theories with friends about the hypnotizing night, there was one thing they could all agree on. On this New Year’s Eve, they had witnessed magic being formed in a flash of black and orange.

lonely girls my beloved. i see you staying in your room, i see you standing in grocery store aisles feeling the sudden wave of isolation wash over you. i understand how badly you want and how bad that makes you feel. i get it. we're not alone. but we are.

what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at.
this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.
the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…

Like, not to be an anarcho-communist on main
but i’m so tired of hearing liberals talk about how “can’t we just have one day to breathe” literally every single time anyone criticizes B*den or H*rris. Y’all wanted “one day” during the entirety of the election process, then election day, and the days following, and now inauguration, and probably for the next four years
because it’s so much easier for y’all to ask for more time to enjoy yourselves vs actually acknowledging that Tr*mp was a symptom of a system working exactly as it was designed to and that B*den isn’t going to fix everything for you if you ask him to, pretty please with a cherry on top, and then doing shit beyond pushing people to vote as if that’s the be all end all of activism
so, no. you can’t have “one day.” you’ve had too many days. and we’ve lost too many people.

whenever i see "low in calories" im just like??? u mean. low in energy?? low in energy. that is what u r promoting to me??
a calorie is a literal unit of measurement for how much energy something gives u, so when a product is like "low in calories" im like. great. so the exact opposite I'm looking for in food.

So someone pointed out to me recently that in a few years, maybe a few decades, the history of the us during covid is probably going to get twisted. The fact that we all had to make and wear cloth masks is going to be hailed as a symbol of how we “"came together as a nation”“” or whatever the fuck propaganda spin they try to put on it.
So I just want to say, for the record, the time of the corona virus pandemic was not a time when america came together.
This was a time when people hoarded toilet paper and sanitizing supplies either for themselves or to sell at absurd prices to the desperate people who didn’t get to the store soon enough during the shortages
This was a time when scared parents were sending their kids to finish school in the spring in plastic trash bags because they couldn’t think of any other way to possibly keep their families safe
This was a time when grocery store and retail and service workers were forced to keep working whether they wanted to risk their health or not because they couldn’t make rent otherwise and the people with enough privilege to have remote jobs tried to repay them with applause instead of fair wages
This was a time when nurses had the hold the hands of multiple dying people every day as their families watched their loved ones die over a video call because the hospital couldn’t risk having visitors
This was a time when city governments had to handle so many eviction hearings that they rented out convention centers and called in the national guard instead of doing a rent freeze to stop predatory landlords
This was a time when racism and police brutality were so unbearably horrible that people protested in the streets for months even though there was a god damn pandemic that our federal government wasn’t doing shit to stop and the cops were so mad that they were being asked to stop beating up black people that they were beating up everyone
This was a time when schools being forced to reopen in the fall or lose their federal funding had to draft templates for letters if a teacher or a staff person or a fucking child died from exposure to corona at school
This was a time when the president of the United states demanded that the cdc stop releasing data about all the people who were dying because of the warnings he ignored for months were making him look bad
This was a time when some state governments didn’t mandate masks and forced businesses to reopen because they didn’t want to pay unemployment to people trying to stay safe at home anymore
This was a time when Jeff Bezos was on track to be a fucking trillionare because everyone was ordering things on amazon instead of going to the store and the people he worked to death to get it didn’t see a single cent of it
This was a time when instead of providing homeless people with housing, we painted boxes on the ground to show homeless people how far away the had to be on the street to maintain social distancing
We did not come together to make cloth masks. Cloth masks represent nothing less than the absolute and utter failure of a nation’s government to inform and protect its citizens
This was not a time when we came together. This was a time when we survived, and not all of us made it.
This was a time when people casually talked about how many human lives the economy was worth without considering the evil that had just come out of their mouths.
This was a time when thousands of us died for profit and the ego of a cheating narcissists con man who scammed his way into the white house
This was a time that we survived. Most of us tried to do the right thing, stay home, limit trips to the store and socializing, wear a mask. And still, so many of us were lost. Thousands every day.
But that wasn’t a good enough reason for some people, for those among us who were too selfish to recognize the responsibilities we have toward one another as human beings.
This was not a time that we came together
This was a time that we survived
Not all of us made it
And those of us who did survive will never forget the evil we saw daily in our politicians and those around us
