How did you get to urbex?

When i was 16 or 17 a girl I really liked took me to this abandoned hospital in her hometown called Henryton. I’ve been in small abandonments before just for fun but this was a whole complex and i was hooked from the start. This was a pretty well known spot and it was heavily vandalized, but for someone who’d never actively explored or seen anything like it at the time, it was new and exciting. It felt like a giant post-apocalyptic playground and i had free reign. While wandering around taking photos, i felt a disconnection from the rest of the world that i’d never really felt before being a city kid. After leaving i started to get into the historical aspect of it. i researched it’s history, looked up archival photos from when it was active and got a sense of what it was like when it was active. Since then i’ve been across the country and even to Europe photographing and exploring old structures and preserving them in pictures and i don’t plan on stopping.

Have you guys ever traveled to and explored around upstate NY? I've gone to some really awesome steel mills and hospitals here!

Unfortunately no. I missed out on a Buffalo trip a while back. But there is a lot up that way I've been meaning to go to. Hopefully soon!

J.W. Cooper School - 2015 - Shenandoah, PA Built in 1917 and abandoned around 1986 in Shenandoah, PA, a once a booming coal town now stricken with post-industrial poverty, The J.W. Cooper School was left to rot until 2013 when It was acquired by a caring individual who is determined to renovate the building in hopes of re-opening it as a community center. The school also has a swimming pool and a gymnasium with lots of space that would be highly beneficial to the area and it’s citizens and youth alike. Even though the cost of the restoration is high, The caretaker has already made significant progress in replacing the windows and fixing the roof and facade. But there is still a long way to go.
