TYE - TiE Chandigarh - PitchDeck by Students

The PitchDeck was done through the sequence of events comprising of a short presentation and a small Question/ Answer round by the fellow young entrepreneurs and the jury. We witnessed some really fantastic pitches all of which were aimed towards making the life easier and simple.

Many of the ideas presented Artificial intelligence to make a new product while some of them were remarkable in conserving the existing resources. All the ideas presented were solving a problem – which is an absolute necessity for a startup to succeed. We all were pleasantly surprised by the amount of effort students put in for coming up with such amazing ideas to solve day to day problems.

The Pitch by Kaira, on preserving the Memories of grandparents in a Legacy Box which can have their valuable items to pass to the younger generation, is worth mentioning. The mentors were impressed with the purity of the idea itself. A myriad of ideas were Environment centred as they tried to conserve the Natural Resources like Water bodies as unveiled by Agamjot in her PitchDeck on Lifesupporters.

The Jury of Session I of PitchDeck included Ms.Ritika Singh , CEO, Kontent Factory, Mr.Harit Mohan,CEO Signicent Technologies and Mr. Hitesh Kumar Gulati, Change and Organisational Development Consultant. The involvement of these established entrepreneurs certainly helped students to learn a tonne about Sharpening the Pitches. The Part I of PitchDeck by students ended up on a very positive note with many more exciting Pitches to be unfolded.

In the second session of Pitch Presentation, many students improvised their previous presentations and came up with even better and practical ideas . The mentors had given 2 ultimate Guru Mantras to the students for good ideation,i.e Scalability and Sustainability of the Startup. This Session witnessed a good application of this GuruMantra with a great idea on Rejuvenation of Old Libraries across the city through a mobile application and production of fresh vegetables and fruits through instore farming to name a few. Kudos to the mentors to have developed the students to such an extent where they can come up with such ideas and moving forward to give them a continuous support. To boost the confidence of the children, TiE Chandigarh organised a session by Taranjeet Singh Bhamra,CEO of AgNext to share his journey with the Young Entrepreneurs. He urged the students to work on the Intrinsic Factors which include the Personality and Attitude to succeed in life.

Mr Taranjeet Singh de-abbreviated the word PITCH as, P- Personality I-Intellingensia T- Technology C- Clarity H- Honesty This provided students an insight into what exactly are the most important factors for a Pitch. The admiring personality of Mr.Bhamra motivated each and every student to achieve their goal. The phase of Childhood is accompanied by innocence ,eagerness to learn and a lot of energy. Children learn new things everyday and their physical and mental growth stays at the optimum level. But some children can have conditions like ADHD, Anxiety ,Autism which hampers their overall focus and ability to concentrate.

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects children and teens and can also continue into adulthood. A child with ADHD has an unfocussed mind which can interrupt the learning process and mental development.

What causes ADHD?

This disorder can be a result of a number of conditions but is largely an inheritable genetic disorder. Other conditions may include Brain injury in young age, Environmental Exposures to chemicals, premature delivery , Emotional trauma and disturbing atmosphere at home. According to recent studies, children with ADHD are likely to develop Diabetes and Obesity in adulthood. It is more prevalent in boys than girls.

This condition is mostly observed in age group 3-7 years and can also continue till adulthood. 1 out of 5 children suffer from ADHD in the current scenario. The biological cause of ADHD is the deficiency of neurotransmitter Norepinephrine in the brain and the treatment includes stimulants which help in synthesising this neurotransmitter.

Symptoms of children having ADHD :

Children having ADHD show significant 3 types of symptoms as Inattention, Impulsivity and Hyperactivity.

The signs of Inattention are characterized by:

• Difficulty in remembering and following instructions.

• Disorganised planning and poor concentration.

• Frequently misplacing things

2.The signs of Impulsivity in children are –

• Doing things before thinking

• Intruding in others conversations

• Over emotional and expressive

• Restlessness

• Unable to stay quiet

3.The sign of Hypersensitivity include:

• Constantly fidgeting like tapping the foot, shaking the foot or moving the fingers.

• Sensitivity of moving objects and flashing lights

• Getting overwhelmed by small stimulus

• Exaggerated response to normal situations.

These symptoms are manageable with certain adjustments. Children with hypersensitivity can be more creative and are highly energy driven. They are always filled with enthusiasm and have spontaneity in their actions. Such people are open to more options in life and have flexibility to adjust.

Treatment procedure:

Children with symptoms of Inattention, impulsivity and Hyperactivity can cause many problems if left untreated. The treatment options of ADHD include-

• Behavioral therapy

• Proper Diet and exercise

• Indulging in Co- Curricular activities

• Education on Anger Management

• Cognitive therapy

• Counselling

All of these procedures can help to treat the signs of ADHD and can prove to be highly beneficial in the long run.

Role of teachers in helping a child with ADHD:

Children with ADHD find it difficult to learn new things and practice ,hence in order to treat this condition, support from teachers is also necessary. Teachers should evaluate the weaknesses and highs of the child and counsel them regularly .

Teachers should come up with creative strategies to help children cope up with their mood swings.

The long assignments can be broken down into shorter tests to improve concentration and focus. Using visual charts and diagrams for instructions will help the children understand better.

These supportive therapies , adjustments and steps can help children learn better at school.

Parental Support:

Parents are the pioneers for the better mental health of the child. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, stay patient. Effective parenting can prove very beneficial in correcting behavioural problems.

• Prepare daily routine plans for your child to help them stay organised.

ROLE OF MENTAL HEALTH: The role of mental health at any phase of life is as important as other aspects of health. This fact has been realised by the society in some previous years only after the breakthrough on the stigma attached to such topics. Stable mental health can help the student to be more attentive , concentrated , leads to better grades and personality development. But unfortunately, 8 in 100 students experience a serious mental health disease , 8% teens have anxiety disorder and only 1 in 5 affected students receive proper care and guidance. Mental Health Disorders can affect classroom learning and social interactions, both of which are critical to the success of students. CAUSES OF POOR MENTAL HEALTH : The student faces a lot of situations in school , college life and beyond which shapes their mind and personality and affect the mental health. Conditions which lead to adverse affect on a student's mental health involve • Peer pressure • Unhealthy Competition • Substance Abuse • Stress • Bad Environment at home • Physical Health Problems • Lack of Coping Skills Many of these factors lead to serious mental conditions in students such as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) , Schizophrenia, Eating problems like Anorexia Nervosa ,Bulimia and Sleep Difficulties. But these conditions are treatable. Early detection and intervention can lead to improvement in the students. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS : The parents and teachers are the first ones which can identify the symptoms and can be the pioneers towards the healthy mental health of a child. Different students have different symptoms but some common signs can be identified. The symptoms in a student facing a mental condition are : • Change in Attitude • Hopelessness • Emotional Outbursts in any form like Aggression, Crying or silence • Sleep problems • Sudden change in Weight • Persistent pattern of irritable mood • Lethargy • Suicide attempts in severe cases These listed symptoms can be direct indications of a mental health condition which is most of the times overlooked by the parents and teachers which is the biggest reason for the delayed diagnosis and hence greater repercussions. ROLE OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS : Different mental disorders are having different courses of treatment but the support of teachers and parents can help the students a lot to tackle such conditions. Role of parents : ‘The best way to get help , is to ask for it'. The parents should not try to suppress the change in behavioral pattern due to the social stigmas as they will worsen up the condition. Parents should try to maintain a healthy relationship wherein the child is able to express his/her emotions, praise the child when they perform well and recognise the efforts they have put in. Help them to develop the friendly environment at home which will allow the child to feel safe and protected. Help them set realistic goals . Being aware of the social media usage of your child is very important to keep them away from inappropriate content. Be a role model by speaking about your own mental health and feelings. It is correctly said , “Education begins from home”. Role of School and teachers: The teachers are the parents in school! They are the guiding light of a student’s attitude and personality. 1. Schools can provide proper Counselling by a professional counsellor on a proper schedule . 2. Teachers should educate and speak about mental health to students to eliminate the social stigma. 3. Promote physical well being of students through sports and utilise their energy in constructive work. 4. Creating a safe environment which is BULLYING FREE and RAGGING FREE. 5. Teach Coping Skills to students on how to respond to specific situations. 6. Incorporate positive attitude through motivational lectures . 7. Involve the families in every step of a student’s development. CONCLUSION: Mental health is no more a taboo in the society and has been accepted as the disorder which requires specific treatments and precautions. Talking to your students and children will definitely make a difference. Together we can help our developing youth to be healthy – both mentally and physically.
