Finally finished my Hortustale Gaster design! I really enjoyed working on this one honestly, probably my favourite ones so far. His story is interesting, I didn’t want to make him some conniving bastard who made his sons to use them as experiments. I haye the thought of Sans and Papyrus having an evil father who hates them. Gaster was one of the main monsters to fight in the monster-human war, he alongside Grillby and his soulmate fought valiantly, slaying humans who dared kidnap innocent monsters left and right. Gaster ended up losing his soulmate to a human who hit her while she was distracted and her soul shattered upon impact. Monsters are easy to dust if a human has evil intent. Gaster was grief-stricken and after the war was ended peacefully he was taken under Toriels and Asgores wing as an apprentice and adopted son. He was determinted to learn how to cultivate flowers so he could never have an incident like the one with his soulmate and his determination payed off. Gaster showed an aptitude for this power and learned quickly. Due to multiple achievements and successful experiments he earned the position of royal scientist. Gaster created many things, from the core to the beginnings of a warp machine. Even with his adopted family and his few friends Gaster felt lonely.

My headcannon is that monsters can make children by themselves if they so wish but they have to break off a soul shard to do so and most monsters won’t survive having more than one child this way, so Gaster did it, he wanted a child so much and he never got the chance to have one with his soulmate. His soul was shattered in half and Sans was born. The shattering of his soul caused outward damage, cracks both deep and shallow appeared all over his skull and ribs, he received large holes in his palms and his soul was greatly weakened. Due to the instability of his soul Gaster made a glass soul container and attached it to a chain always keeping the soul under his clothing. Because Gaster was a flower cultivator flowers grew all over his body, mainly in the cracks. Gaster was fiercely devoted to Sans and did everything he could to raise him right and when the time came Sans became Gasters apprentice and the second royal scientist, he also took in a young Alphys as a scientist.

He could feel his soul weakening further and knew the glass container couldn’t handle the soul anymore, his time was running out. Gaster sat Sans down one night and showed him the contained soul explaining what he has done and what he was about to to do. He intended to give Sans a brother because he knew he couldn’t live much longer and Sans being lonely for the rest of his days was not an option. With his intent in mind Gaster made Papyrus and held both him and Sans, telling his sons he loved them before he dusted once and for all. Sans was beside himself, he had lost a father but had gained a brother. He made sure to take great care of his younger brother and left his position as scientist being unable to handle remembering his father and what his father did. Sans cultivated a very special flower that resembled the flowers that grew on his father and then scattered his dust on the flower. Nowadays this flower sits in a glass terrarium forever blooming. Sans and Papyrus make sure to take good care of it.
