'middle age' is typically considered to be between 45-65

it is extremely common to switch careers, start new relationships, emigrate, go to college for the first or second time, or make other life-changing decisions in middle age

it's wild that I even have to spell it out, but older adults (60+) still have social lives and hobbies and interests.

you can still date when you get old. you can still fuck. you can still learn new skills, be fashionable, be competitive. you can still gossip, you can still travel, you can still read. you can still transition. you can still come out.

young doesn't mean peaked. you're inexperienced in your 20s! you're still learning and practicing! you're developing social skills and muscle memory that will last decades!

there are a million things to do in the world, and they don't vanish overnight because an imaginary number gets too big

⚠️Spoilers for Sunrise on the Reaping and the Hunger Games⚠️

For some reason, I thought the first time Haymitch called Katniss “sweetheart” was on the train right after the reaping.

But it’s not.

The first time the nickname slips is after Katniss gets back to their floor after her session with the Gamemakers.

She’d rushed in, tears streaming down her face and locked herself in her room, sobbing and refusing to talk to anyone.

Finally, she comes to dinner, face still red and blotchy and miserable. Haymitch gives her time to eat something before he finally asks about the individual sessions. Peeta expresses his frustration.

Then, Haymitch turns to Katniss. “And you, sweetheart?”

Maybe it wasn’t only that he’d seen Louella in Katniss in that moment, Katniss vulnerable, like his first sweetheart — broken and scared for what would come — it also stirred in him that protectiveness that he’d felt for that little girl he’d held in his arms when she couldn’t stand on her own.

“In every way, you are a thousand times better than anybody in the Capitol. You are loved better, raised better, and a whole lot better company. You are the best ally I could ever hope for. Okay, sweetheart?”

And Katniss was Burdock’s little girl. His best friend’s child, that in another life he might have called his niece, might have called sweetheart so much sooner than that moment.

And while Katniss felt frustrated by the nickname, a little piece of Haymitch’s shattered heart slipped back into place.
