I'm gonna crosspost some words i posted alongside these drawings on twitter for archival purposes here even though i'm a bit embarrassed. One of my fav headcanons for Thorfinn is that he never truly forgives Askeladd. To me there's a big difference between letting go of hatred and granting forgiveness, and I like to think that Thorfinn, as much as he matures and grows, never crosses that last threshold. It's not easy. Thorfinn is not a saint, he's human, he's wounded and he's perpetually grieving, and Askeladd's memory is tied to so much pain and regret and Thorfinn's own terrible mistakes. The reason behind Thorfinn destroying so many lives. Of course, that doesn't mean that Thorfinn can't acknowledge Askeladd's mentorship (the "three dads" panel). Sensei has said in interviews that Askeladd was created to be Thorfinn's mentor during violent times, and Thorfinn learned stuff from Askeladd that ensured his own survival, regardless of how difficult it must have been for him to admit it. (Thorfinn calling Askeladd "あの��郎" during Garm's fight brings a smile to my face). Which leads me to Thorfinn's nightmare. Why would Thorfinn use Askeladd's voice and words instead of his dad's to essentially push himself forward? I like to think that, at that moment, on top of being too guilt-ridden to face Thors, Thorfinn desperately craved guidance and understanding from someone who did, in fact, understand him. Askeladd saw the hollowed-out boy beneath the vengeance and still held some semblance of hope for the hate-fueled lost cause Thorfinn was, despite being the object of Thorfinn's relentless hatred. He destroyed Thorfinn's life, gave him tools to survive and used his last breath to remind him who he was. It's polarizing and messed up. That tiny moment where Askeladd stares in silence as Thorfinn cries and apologises to the people he killed.... I'm always bringing that up because I'm obsessed with it lol. Askeladd is staring at Thorfinn's bare soul at that moment, with no words uttered, no judgement, and then a slight smile. And then you realize, this is Thorfinn's own mind. What if there's a part deep inside Thorfinn that longs for the solace of being seen like that, sometimes, when things get far too exhausting, despite the pain and resentment that such a troubled memory brings. It's complicated and messy. This was my thought process for that little comic.
