i have a really strong opinion if ever yellowjackets turns into something paranormal. it scares me that "It" or "the wilderness" is actually a spirit or anything else. i'd like to think that this ideology/belief system was built by them—piece by piece, out of grief, fear, trauma, and the desperate need to believe in something. what makes it hit even harder is how it all started from someone who was supposed to represent comfort and morality: laura lee.

it’s honestly wild how ironic it is. the most religious, morally upright girl ends up planting the seed for a belief system that becomes the exact opposite. when she dies, her catholic faith doesn’t disappear—it morphs. what was once about love and salvation turns into ritual, sacrifice, power. not because lottie wanted to be some cult leader from the start, but because everyone around her was so desperate for structure and meaning in the chaos.

and that’s exactly what happens in real life too. look at history: people have always made new religions or reinterpreted old ones in times of crisis. early christianity spread under roman persecution. new religious movements—rven dangerous ones—often rise up when people feel lost, ignored, or scared. think jonestown, heaven’s gate, even some of the more intense fringe cults today. when reality feels unbearable, belief becomes a way to make it make sense.

that’s what happened in the woods. the girls needed a reason for why their friends were dying. why they were still alive. why the wilderness felt alive. and when laura lee’s structured religion no longer applied, they made their own. they didn’t want a god who lived in heaven—they wanted one who could protect them right there, in the freezing forest, while they were starving and losing their minds.

the craziest part? that same need for belief is what leads people to do the worst things. religion, at its core, is supposed to bring comfort. but when it gets twisted through trauma and desperation, it starts justifying violence. we’ve literally seen it in history — people killing “in the name of god,” when the original message was peace. it’s not a religion problem. it’s a human one.

that’s why lottie’s arc hits so hard. she’s not evil — she’s just someone who breaks, and then becomes the thing everyone else projects their hope onto. and it works. because when you’re in pain, the idea of someone knowing what’s going on, something being in control, feels better than nothing. even if that “something” starts asking for blood.

so yeah. in my own preferred perspective, the wilderness wasn’t some random cult paranormal plot twist. it was the logical next step for a bunch of girls with nothing left. and that’s what makes it so real — because people have always turned to belief systems to survive, even if it costs them their morality, or their humanity.
