you wake up to eddie yelling your name. he's kneeling over you, frantically shaking your shoulders. you blink slowly, still in a sleepy haze, "what is it eddie?"

"it's 7:50, we're gonna be super fucking late man"

eddie gets off you and you get out of the bed. you glance in the mirror to try and make your hair look more like it usually does.

"can i borrow some of your clothes?" you ask eddie, who is hurriedly pulling on his socks

"uh yeah sure," he says, grabbing some things from his drawers, "here."

he hands you a short-sleeved iron maiden shirt and black ripped jeans. you put them on and they fit reasonably well. you check the time: 8:01.

"time to go" eddie says, grabbing your hand and leading you out of the house.

you pull up to the school vaguely on time.

"what do you have first?" eddie asks

"uhhh," you check your timetable, "biology"

"i've got maths, see you around then"

"see you"

you can barely concentrate throughout biology, which isn't unusual for you but you can't even focus on your next lesson, english. your thoughts keep drifting back to the man you stayed with last night. finally the bell rings for break. as you get up to leave you spot someone in a hellfire shirt, you think his name was gareth?

"uh, hey do you know where eddie is?" you ask him

"yeah i was just about to head over to him, you can come with if you want?"

you walk with gareth to the cafeteria, it's not as busy as it is at lunch, thankfully. eddie and the rest of the guys are sat at one of the tables. eddie's face lights up when he sees you, "hey, how're you?"

"pretty hungry"

"yeah sorry about that my alarm's kind of broken at the moment"

"he stayed over?" mike asks eddie

"i even showed him my ring collection you know"

"looks like eddie's got a new boyfriend" dustin says

you hold up your hand, "he did give me a ring"

you glance over to see eddie blush slightly. your cheeks take on a reddish tinge as well and you look away.

after putting his ring on your finger, eddie looks up.

"shit it's getting pretty dark out"

"what time is it"

eddie turns around to check his clock

"10:15...do you want to stay over?"

"yeah, i'd need to call my parents first, though"

"ok, the phone's this way" eddie says, leading you out of his bedroom.

the (possibly once white) phone on the wall manages to connect to your family's line and you tell them what you'll be doing. they're a bit annoyed at you for not telling them earlier but you've stayed over at friend's houses before so they're not shocked.

you put the phone back.

"so's everything ok?" eddie asks

"yeah yeah it's fine they're not super strict or anything"

"uncle wayne will be back in a couple of hours so you can't have his room but you could take the sofa, the floor or..." eddie trails off

"or?" you ask

"i mean my bed can fit 2 people but it's totally cool if you don't want that."

"if you're ok with it, a bed's definitely better than a sofa."

"alright then," eddie says, grinning, "but you better not snore."

eddie makes the two of you dinner. he's a suprisingly decent cook. you didn't expect the macaroni cheese to be better than edible. while you eat, you watch a game show about guessing the prices of various things and try and come up with the most ridiculous answers. after about an hour or two of this, eddie turns to you and says,

"i think we probably have to go to bed now to get any chance of making it in on time."

you go with him back to his room. eddie gets in first and motions for you to join him. the bed is on the larger side, but there's two of you so you lay on your side, facing eddie.

"you better not snore" he says

"you better not steal the duvet"

you quietly talk about random things until you both fall asleep. dnd, your project with dustin, eddie's band, middle earth. neither of you are sure who falls asleep first but there isn't any snoring.

it's small and messy. eddie seems somewhat embarrassed as you follow him inside.

"home sweet home" he says, scratching his neck. the silvery array of rings decorating his fingers are distracting and you stare for a little too long.

when you look back up at eddie he's blushing, for a different reason this time.

"i actually have quite a few...i could show you the collection if you want?"

"yeah that sounds nice"

eddie holds the door open, "after you babe" his tone is joking, though it doesn't match the look in his eyes. suddenly it hits you that you're in eddie munson's bedroom.

the man in question is currently under his bed. he emerges with a dust-covered shoebox and significantly disheveled mullet. without thinking, your hand reaches out to touch his hair. the curls are so soft on your hand and you don't want to stop but you meet his wide doe eyes and realise what you're doing.

"s..sorry there was a spider" you say, looking away

"yeah...yeah it's ok man don't worry"

"do you still want to see the rings?"

"uh yeah"

he walks over to his bed and sits cross-legged, putting the box on his lap. he waves you over and you sit down facing him. dust flies off the lid and you both start to cough.

"are you ok?" you ask

"are you ok?"

you smile looking at the packed box. there are so many different styles and materials.

"where did you get all these?"

"just here and there, if i see something nice i'll get it. if you want though, you can take one?"

"really?"

"yeah yeah of course"

you scan the box for a couple seconds and point at the slim, silver ring with an oval-shaped black stone.

"can i have this one?" you ask

"yeah sure." eddie tells you, "it's onyx, i got it at mrs wheeler's yard sale a while back."

he picks it up and looks in your eyes.

"can i..put it on for you?" he asks, gesturing towards your hand

your voice is noticeably higher when you say, "yes"

your hand shakes slightly as you extend it out to him. he carefully slides it onto your ring finger.

"your hands are nice"

"thanks"

after an hour of feeling like your brain is exploding, you've finished creating your dnd character. eddie was really patient with you. he probably still feels bad about what happened earlier, you think.

luckily, your slight obsession with lotr/the hobbit means you're a little familiar with some of the terminology. you call your character aragorn: it's the first thing that comes to mind and, as you say this, eddie laughs a little.

"you know, i've seen you around but didn't peg you as the type to be into this kind thing."

"really?" you ask, "what did you think i'd be into?"

"honestly i don't know, i mean you seem kind of neutral really."

"he's pretty cool though, we hung out last year." dustin butts in

"dude how many male role models do you need?" mike asks

you put a hand to your chest, "you have other male role models?" you say, pretending to be upset

"we should have a contest sometime, see who wins. you, me or steve" eddie says

"steve harrington?"

"yeah i know, dustin says he's different now but definitely no contest for the two of us."

"hey eddie we are actually going to play dnd tonight, right?" gareth asks

"yeah yeah don't worry man"

your hand shakes as you pick up the dice. dustin failed his shot so if you don't roll a 20, everyone's dead. you take a deep breath.

"fingers crossed" you say

the dice seems to fall forever but you can't believe your eyes when it finally settles. 20. the rooms breaks out with cheering. eddie pulls you in for a hug and pats your back.

"you sure you've never played before?"

"yeah, just had the best teacher"

"damn you're gonna make me blush"

it turns out you and eddie leave in the same direction. it's getting dark out and, even though you used to think of hawkins as safe, so much has happened in recent years that you feel a little relieved to have company. especially such handsome company.

"you're still in that band right? what was it called again?" you ask

"corroded coffin, we play every friday over that way"

"yeah i remember you back in middle school, made me want to start playing guitar, you looked so cool."

"did you?"

"no my parents wouldn't let me. they're...very christian"

"i could try to teach you some if you came over."

"im so down for that. i'd probably need to call my parents first though. do you have a phone at yours"

"yeah, it's pretty old but it does the job"

your fork picks at the overcooked carrots and still-hard rice left on your tray. if you try to force anymore down your throat it'll probably all just come back up. you head over to the bins to tip the remaining 3/4 of your "lunch" away.

what time is it? the clock up on the wall tells you 13:45, 15 minutes left and then just an hour of english. it's almost over.

suddenly someone taps your back. you spin around. is that...mick, nancy's brother?

"what do you want?"

"um do...do you want to..uh join hellfire?"

"join what?"

"hellfire it's uh-" he opens his jacket and points the logo on his shirt, "this d&d club after school."

"d&d, like that dun...dungeons and dragons thing?"

"yea-yeah"

"when exactly is it?"

"4-7pm at dustin's...uh dustin henderson"

"i guess i could try it out?"

"yeah yeah that'd be great, you can be whoever you want and you get this shirt too"

"ok so like do i leave with you?"

"oh i usually cycle...uh i guess you can go with eddie?"

"eddie?"

"he's the leader of hellfire club. i think he has spanish now so you should find him after school."

"ok?"

he awkwardly smiles at you and turns to leave. he's a little strange, you think, but you have been curious about d&d recently. you obviously don't think it's some satanist cult like they say on the news. honestly it kind of reminds you of the lord of the rings or something and you've actually been to dustin's house a couple times for that project last year.

english eventually drags by, you guess they really needed a new member. come to think of it, you don't actually remember who's in hellfire besides mike and dustin. hopefully everyone's ok...ish.

you make your way to the languages block, realising on the way that you have no idea what eddie looks like. surely he has one of those shirts on, right? you stop for a second, wondering whether you should turn back and try to find mike when-

a tall man with long curly brown hair crashes into you, sending you flying. your head's pounding and you feel a warmth coming from your nose. when you reach to touch it your fingers come away bloody.

"shitshitshitshit i'm so sorry man"

you look up to see the guy you crashed into. your sight's a little blurred but you make out the logo on his shirt. hellfire club.

"are...you..eddie?" you ask slowly

he nods, looking panicked,"dude your nose is bleeding do you need to go to the nurse or something?"

you start to get up "i'm ok, i was just looking for you. mike asked me to join your club."

"you're the substitute?"

"yeah i guess"

he takes a black hankerchief out of his pocket and cautiously dabs at your nose.

"still want to go to hellfire then?"

"yeah"
