In my opinion, what would have fixed Cyric's characterization was more explicitly leaning into the trial in Shadowdale being his breaking point because it touches upon A LOT of his internal insecurities and concerns that do consistently overarch his character. Specifically, it'd validate them--- this root philosophy of "you can't trust anyone except yourself" that goes on to define Cyric.

Instead, they had Cyric completely predict with pin-point accuracy what the trial outcome would be for Midnight and Adon, and thus he was already bitter and cynical over it. If they'd just let Cyric's Shadowdale (the book) characterization come through more as it should've then they'd have had the foundation that Cyric was on track to begin to open up to the idea that not every person is looking to predate on vulnerability. Give him the hope that the trial won't come out to be what he's dreading, have him be surprised.

The author for Waterdeep even references the trial as if it WAS SUPPOSED to be the breaking point for Cyric--- like the author had been told in summary. But not the part that the first writer didn't actually implement it.

Cyric having had hope for the first time in his entire life and that hope being wasted, and to see even outside Zhentil Keep you can't trust your fate and safety to anyone else... Literally, that'd have fixed the majority of his following characterization by solidifying his want for power, his self-centered cruelty, and his severe rejection of attachments.

Instead, I'm hanging up Missing Person posters for Shadowdale!Cyric because I don't know where he went but I do know Tantras!Cyric isn't him. 😭

i know the casting animation change from dao to da2 is supposed to be a “let’s pretend it always looked like this” but it’s too funny to me how in origins ur using magic for the first time as your lil sheltered circle mage jabbing their big glorified tree branch awkwardly into thin air over and over again and then we get to da2 and Hawke is twirling their staff around like an overzealous baton girl in a marching band and beating people to shit with the big knife tied to the end of it

The combination of 'unnervingly flawless self-control' with 'occasional tendency to engage in reckless, dangerous, and borderline self-destructive or death-seeking behaviour' in a character is SUCH catnip to me
