MAITRE CARREFOUR
Carrefour, Maitre – Master of the Crossroads Maitre Carrefour, master and guardian of the crossroads, may be the alter ego of Eshu Elegbara, his mirror image, shadow side, or nocturnal counterpart. Eshu Elegbara (Leg ba; Elegba) is a solar spirit. Maitre Carrefour emerges with the moon. Papa Legba is a trickster: Maitre Carrefour is a trickster taken to exponential extremes. Crossroads are places of decisions; the road chosen (or not) can impact one’s entire life. Be careful: crossroads spirits are invoked to point you to the right road or direction. If Maitre Carrefour is feeling tricky, he may point you in the wrong direction or make you lose your way. Crossroads are favourite haunts of witches, spirits, and ghosts: those magical crossroads are under Maitre Carrefour’s jurisdiction. Maitre Carrefour walks the crossroads at night, in the company of malevolent spirits. He is their master and gatekeeper. Maitre Carrefour controls comings and goings of ghosts and malevolent spirits. Carrefour unleashes the secret spirits of the night: he may be petitioned to keep them far from you. He is, however, usually a spirit of last resort. Don’t invoke him until other avenues and attempts have failed. He is a great, powerful, and potentially dangerous spirit: never summon him for trifles. Don’t get too comfortable or familiar with him. He is the master. It is not necessarily to your benefit to attract his attention without very good reason. If you feel you need him, it may be advisable to request the services of a reputable Vodou priest or priestess (houngan; mambo) to intercede for you. Maitre Carrefour is an aggressive, effective spirit. He works quickly, and so devotees love him. There are no Demons that he cannot command. However, he also punishes quickly: he’s not a good-natured, patient spirit. Never promise him what you’re not absolutely certain you can deliver immediately. Maitre Carrefour is not a spirit for beginners. He doesn’t care whether you’re just learning. Pleas for mercy may have little effect. He has a cold nature; hence he can behave cruelly although he does possess a sense of justice. He is not an evil spirit per se but a hardened, tough one. He didn’t get to be master of evil spirits by being nice. He is a brilliant, quick-thinking, tricky spirit: don’t even think of outwitting him. Maitre Carrefour is petitioned to keep malignant spirits, ghosts, and people far from you. He can break hexes, curses, and spells. If sorcerers have set ghosts or spirits after you, Maitre Carrefour can redirect them and prevent them from drawing near. Maitre Carrefour owns the night: there’s little he can’t do. • Maitre Carrefour is the Bizango counterpart to Legba, the first invoked in rituals and ceremonies. • He is syncretized to Saint Andrew, the vampire saint. • Carrefour is sometimes classified among the Barons, in which context he is Baron Carrefour (French) or Bawon Kalfou (Kreyol).
ALSO KNOWN AS:
Kalfu; Mèt Kalfou
ORIGIN:
Haiti
CLASSIFICATION:
Lwa
ANIMAL:
Black pig
COLOUR:
Black

I Am Still Standing And That Should Scare You
I took a walk where you wouldn’t dare
where the wind carries regret
like perfume clinging to the bones of memory,
where the ground groans
under the weight of every time
I almost said fuck it and disappeared.
You want truth?
Not the polished kind.
The bleeding kind.
Then sit down. Shut up.
And listen with your spine, not your ears.
You look at me and nod,
thinking you’ve read my chapters
but you’ve never touched the pages
that caught fire.
You see a man still walking
and think that means peace.
But I’ve carried hell on my back,
slept beside demons
with my name in their teeth,
and smiled just enough
to keep your world comfortable.
I’m not your project.
Not your inspiration porn.
Not your broken toy
you parade around for likes and fake prayers.
I’m the motherfking survivor
you never saw coming
and I didn’t crawl through fire
just to ask your permission to speak.
You judged me from your velvet chair,
sipping your certainty
while I was knee-deep in shards,
begging the night to shut its goddamn mouth,
wishing the morning would stop pretending to be light.
But mercy doesn’t come
to those who suffer politely.
I stayed.
Do you hear me?
I fking stayed.
When vanishing felt like relief.
When silence begged for my name.
I stayed.
Not for your applause.
Not for your healing narrative.
I stayed
because I wasn’t going to hand this cruel, rigged world
another goddamn victory.
Now you call me strong?
Where the hell were you
when I couldn’t even look in the mirror
without flinching?
Don’t you dare call me brave
like it’s some gold sticker shit.
This wasn’t courage.
It was instinct.
It was blood.
It was fire screaming in my lungs
while I still chose to breathe.
I’m not quiet anymore.
I’m not soft for your comfort.
I’m not here to make peace
with the people who made war
on my soul.
I am the voice that rose
from the ashes you left behind.
I am the match you couldn’t snuff out.
I am the loud, cursed, stong
fuck-you
to every lie you whispered
about what I’m worth.
I’m here to make noise.
To rattle the bones of every room
that silenced the broken.
To make the ground shift
when I say my name.
I am still standing.
Still breathing.
Still refusing to bow.
And if that makes you uncomfortable?
Good
It means I’ve finally become
everything you were afraid I could be.

THE SEVEN HERMETIC PRINCIPLES
“The Principles of Truth are Seven; he who knows these, understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open.”
1. THE PRINCIPLE OF MENTALISM
“THE ALL is MIND; the Universe is Mental.”
This Principle embodies the truth that “All is Mind.” It explains that
THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward
manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of “The
Material Universe”; the “Phenomena of Life”; “Matter”; “Energy”; and, in
short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT, which in itself is
UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and thought of as A UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND.
It also explains that all the phenomenal world or universe is simply a Mental Creation of THE ALL, subject to the Laws of Created Things, and that the universe, asa whole, and in its parts or units, has its existence in the Mind of THE ALL, in which Mind we “live and move and have our being.”

When was the last time you thanked your body?
For always healing itself.
For housing your dreams, your feelings, your memories.
For being your soul's vessel in this incarnation.
Your body serves you every day. It has been your faithful companion for however old you are.
You would thank a stranger who holds the door open for you for five seconds. Why would you not thank your body who has been holding life open for you since the moment you were born?
Just like the people in your life, your body will reciprocate your affection.
The last time I got sick, my doctor was shocked at how well I looked given my test results. She said anyone else would have had trouble breathing, let alone walking. Meanwhile, I was belting Whitney Houston in the car just before strutting in my stilettos to see her.
It's not magic: Even if you thank your body every day, it will still get ill every now and then. And one day, it will still pass away.
But in the face of danger and death, a body deeply loved will fight with every fiber of its being to keep you safe for as long as it can.

“I’m antisocial, they say. I don’t mix. It’s so strange. I’m very social indeed. It all depends on what you mean by social, doesn’t it? Social to me means talking to you about things like this Or talking about how strange the world is. Being with people is nice. But I don’t think it’s social to get a bunch of people together and then not let them talk, do you? An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions, or at least most don’t; they just run the answers at you, bing, bing, bing, and us sitting there for four more hours of film-teacher. That’s not social to me at all. It’s a lot of funnels and a lot of water poured down the spout and out the bottom, and them telling us it’s wine when it’s not. They run us so ragged by the end of the day we can’t do anything but go to bed or head for a Fun Park to bully people around, break windowpanes in the Window Smasher place or wreck cars in the Car Wrecker place with the big steel ball. Or go out in the cars and race on the streets, trying to see how close you can get to lampposts, playing ‘chicken’ and ‘knock hubcaps.’ I guess I’m everything they say I am, all right. I haven’t any friends. That’s supposed to prove I’m abnormal. But everyone I know is either shouting or dancing around like wild or beating up one another. Do you notice how people hurt each other nowadays?”

2-They know they don’t know everything – They understand there’s still much to learn.
3-They don’t show off – Instead of bragging about what they can do, they let their work speak for itself.
4-They are humble – Even though they are smart, they don’t think they are better than anyone else.
5-They might have fewer close friends – It can be hard for them to connect with others because they see things differently.
6-They ask good questions – Smart people like to ask questions that help them understand things better.
7-They notice mistakes – They often look for problems in ideas or systems.
8-They love to read – Smart people enjoy reading books and learning new things.
9-They trust their gut feeling – They can often tell how others really feel or what they want.
10-They don’t like to argue – Smart people try to avoid fights and disagreements whenever they can.

💫 Why Protection Magic Is Useful (even if you have no enemies)
A lot of witches will tell new witches (baby witches) that they should start by learning and using protection magic. However, I've started to see a lot of witches say that protection magic is not as important as other witches claim it to be. Saying that they don't have anyone coming after them or an enemy in real life to warrant a spell of protection.
I think this may also be due to how I've not personally come across anyone really explaining why a witch may want to use protection magic all the time.
Now, it is true that there's no need to be paranoid all the time and have protection up 24/7. But here's a list where you may use it, find it useful, or haven't thought protection magic could be included.
An actual person -- This one is obvious, you have an enemy in real life or on the internet and you need protection magic to protect you from their curses.
A malevolant spirit -- They can come from your windows, mirrors (including tv screens, computer screens, and other reflective surfaces maybe), they seep through floor cracks, hanging onto your coats from outside, etc. Just like how you'd use garden gloves to avoid dirt up your nails being trapped there. Protection magic is just like putting on those gloves.
An energy -- Say you have a neighbour who's arguing with someone. They're yelling and screaming and it can be heard through the apartment walls. That negative energy is seeping into your home and your energy. So it may be worth protecting your home and energy from that sour neighbour's energy. (ever been scolded by your mother and your mood is sour? it's kind of like the same here.)
Your own spell -- Now a self-love spell is probably not something you should protect yourself from. But let's say you're doing a curse. It would be a smart idea to make sure you're protected before beginning such a spell. Much like how you'd wear an apron to protect your clothes from stains when cooking food. You may not always spill your food when cooking, but damn it is it annoying when you do and the stain won't wash off. It's the same with a spell.
Unintentionally -- Sometimes things can happen that's out of our control and it's a good idea to be a little prepared. A black cat suddenly running across the street? Bad luck. Someone got jealous when you told them something good? Evil Eye. Think of it as going to the store with an extra bag for your groceries. You may not need it, but isn't it handy when you at one point do need it?
Protection magic doesn't have to be elaborate or grand or be convoluted. Protection magic is powerful but also extremely simple. All you need is a horseshoe above the door, a little talisman in your pocket, a sigil for your car, etc.
So don't dismiss the importance of protection magic. It may help to improve your spellwork and your energy.

How to Enchant Items 🔮
To enchant an item is to infuse it with magical energy. This energy can come from a variety of sources, including celestial bodies, elements, crystals, herbs, or even yourself.
Some individuals use the words “enchant” and “charm” synonymously as a way to describe the process of infusing something with energy, but for the sake of this post and due to my own beliefs, you enchant something and it then becomes a charm. Alternately, a charm can be something with its own innate energy, like a crystal or herbal amulet.
Enchanting items to turn them into magical objects involves more than just intent - you must learn to channel and manipulate energy, and direct it into that item for enchanting to be successful.
Although, the process of enchanting is extremely versatile and there are many ways to do it.
Here are a few ideas on how to enchant items, in no particular order:
Surround the item with crystals of corresponding intent
Surround the item with herbs of corresponding intent
Place the item in a jar filled with herbs that represent your intent
Place the item in front of a candle and meditate on your intent
Anoint the item with an oil, charged water, or crystal elixir of corresponding intent
Hold the item in your hand(s) and visualize it filling with the appropriate energy
Hold the item in your hand(s) and speak or sing your intent aloud
Craft a symbol to keep near the item in an envelope or sachet
Sew, stitch, or carve a symbol into the item
Write your intention on paper and keep in an envelope with the item
Pair the item with a corresponding runestone or tarot / oracle card in an envelope
Take the item and put it in a box with other items that represent your intent such as crystals, herbs, talismans, amulets, etc.
Bury the item in soil with herbs and/or crystals that match your intent (please don’t put salt on your lawn though, unless you want dead grass)
Pass the item through incense smoke that matches your intent
Pro Tip: Time your enchantments with the appropriate planetary hour, day of the week, time of day, or lunar phase to increase your chances of creating a successful charm.

Using the Elements in Your Spells (ft. Avatar: The Last Airbender)
In my last post, we talked about correspondences and how they can add power to your spells. As a witch, one form of correspondences that you will probably work with a lot is the four elements.
These four (or five, depending on who you ask) elements are the building blocks of the natural world, and everything on earth is associated with one or more of them. Because of this, the elements can serve as a kind of “correspondence cheat sheet” for new witches. For example: you want to do a spell for self-love, and you know that water is associated with healing and love, so you choose herbs and crystals for your spell that are associated with the water element.
Connecting with the elements can also be a spiritual experience for many pagans, but today we’ll be focusing on their uses in magic.
Air
In her book Wicca For Beginners Thea Sabin says that, “air is masculine, light, and cerebral. It corresponds to… birth; youth; enlightenment; inspiration; communication; writing; mobility; and computers and electronics.”
Invoke in Spells For: increasing mental abilities, gaining clarity, travel and movement, new beginnings, spirituality or spiritual development, creativity, inspiration, communication
Magical Tools that Represent Air: incense smoke, feathers (make sure they’re naturally shed and ethically collected!), a fan, bells or chimes
Colors: yellow, gold
Speed: very fast (but the results may not stick)
Cardinal Direction: East
Season: spring
Herbs/Plants: rosemary, lavender, lemongrass
Crystals: fluorite, kyanite
Animals: birds, insects, and any flying animal
Astrology: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Tarot: the suit of Swords
Example of Air in a Spell: banishing something you want to be rid of by taking a pinch of cayenne pepper in your hand, whispering your intent, and blowing the pepper off of your hand and out a door or window.
Ways to Connect with Air Energy:
light incense and watch the smoke curl and shift in the air (an essential oil diffuser is a good smoke-free alternative)
learn something new!
express your creativity by drawing a picture or writing a poem
make a wish on a dandelion and watch the seeds fly away on your breath
if there is a situation or relationship in your life suffering from poor communication, take steps to resolve it
Fire
Thea Sabin says that, “fire is masculine, hot (obviously), and energetic. It corresponds to… adolescence; impetuousness; passion; drive; creativity; anger; force; light and brightness; and transformation.”
Invoke in Spells For: passion, creativity, motivation, transformation, success
Magical Tools that Represent Fire: candles (including electronic flameless candles!), incense
Colors: red, orange
Speed: fast
Cardinal Direction: South
Season: summer
Herbs/Plants: cayenne, cinnamon, ginger
Crystals: carnelian, amber
Animals: dragons, reptiles, lions
Astrology: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Tarot: the suit of Wands (sometimes called Staves or Rods)
Example of Fire in a Spell: Burning a red candle for passion and motivation.
Ways to Connect with Fire Energy:
go outside and spend a few minutes enjoying the heat and warmth of the sun
meditate by gazing into a candle flame
make and drink hot chocolate with cinnamon
eat spicy foods
do something you feel passionate about (especially if it involves physical activity!)
Water
Thea Sabin says that, “water is feminine, cleansing, and healing. It corresponds to… adulthood; nurture; emotions; the subconscious; the otherworld; transformation (like fire, but slower); mystery; compassion; secrets; and the occult.”
Invoke in Spells For: healing, love or self love, processing trauma, shadow work, psychic abilities, nurturing yourself and others
Magical Tools that Represent Water: a glass or chalice filled with water (or an empty chalice), seashells, sacred oils
Colors: blue, green
Speed: not very fast, but not very slow
Cardinal Direction: West
Season: fall
Herbs/Plants: rose, lilac, jasmine
Crystals: aquamarine, rose quartz
Animals: fish and any other water-dwelling animals
Astrology: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Tarot: the suit of Cups
Example of Water in a Spell: Taking a cleansing bath with rose quartz, Himalayan salt, and jasmine essential oil to promote self love.
Ways to Connect with Water Energy:
drink more water!
take a relaxing bath or shower
visit the ocean or a lake or river
use a deep meditation to connect to your shadow self
keep a dream journal to connect with your subconscious
Earth
Thea Sabin says, “earth is feminine, solid, and stable. It corresponds to… old age and/or death; fertility; money; stability; building foundations; food and sustenance; and agriculture and gardening.”
Invoke in Spells For: prosperity and material abundance, gaining stillness, feeling grounded, sexuality, fertility, connecting with family or heritage, creating something that will last
Magical Tools that Represent Earth: rocks (not just crystals, but rocks from your backyard as well), dirt or sand, salt
Colors: green, brown
Speed: very slow (but results will last a very long time)
Cardinal Direction: North
Season: winter
Herbs/Plants: all plants are at least partially associated with this element, but some especially “earthy” plants are sage, coffee, and patchouli
Crystals: all crystals are associated with earth, but some especially “earthy” stones are moss agate and bloodstone
Animals: bear, buffalo, wolves, deer
Astrology: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Tarot: the suit of Pentacles (sometimes called the Coins or Disks)
Example of Earth in a Spell: Writing a wish on a bay leaf and burying it in the ground to “plant the seed” for manifesting that desire.
Ways to Connect with Earth Energy:
practice grounding your energy,
do some gardening, even if it’s just getting a houseplant
spend time with your loved ones
play with your pets
donate money to a worthy cause
You may or may not choose to work with a fifth element, called spirit or aether. In Wicca, spirit is associated with deity, which unites the other four elements. In other Western occult traditions, the element of spirit represents the underlying spiritual force that exists within all things. In the book You Are Magical, Tess Whitehurst phrases it this way: “Ultimately everything is pure spirit element temporarily masquerading as something else.”
Because of its limitless and undefined nature, it can be hard to nail down correspondences for spirit. You can invoke the element of spirit to strengthen your connection to the divine, work with your ancestors, or connect more strongly with your own spiritual power.
You can represent the element of spirit in ritual with sacred symbols, such as images of deities, or with sacred geometric shapes.
You do not have to work with spirit to do magic. I personally only work with the four classical elements, and do not include spirit or aether in my practice. However, many witches do choose to incorporate this fifth element and find working with it very fulfilling. The choice is up to you.
One last note: this post focuses on how the elements are divided in Western magic and occult traditions. Different cultures classify the elements differently. For example, in Hinduism the elements are earth, water, fire, air, and either void or Askasha (aether). The Chinese elements are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. If you do not resonate with the Western division of the elements, feel free to investigate other ways of classifying natural forces.
