This made me think of the Soldier Son books. His body changes such that he is perceived as monstrous, but at the end everything goes back to normal. Except the normalcy was eerie and wrong, and we knew the acceptance he embraced was conditional. I felt like those books were playing with this trope.

ok actually genuinely the biggest trope i hate is "oh this character got turned into a monster and now we have to change them back!" and after they get changed back everything goes back to the way it was as though nothing happened and being inhuman didnt affect the person in any way, either negatively OR positively, physically OR mentally.

We don’t have any film adaptations for realm of the elderlings so I’m gonna need you to imagine a gifset for a second. On the left there are shots of the Fool in his cabin in Jhaampe when he thought Fitz was dead. (When word reached us that you were dead, that Regal had killed you… my life ended.
