The terror as people you meet in med school
Inspired by people I've met in med school. Guess which one is me. And wow, this got really long. Yell at me if I missed your fave
Cornelius Hickey: ironically I know a guy who looks a lot like Hickey, hence starting with him. He is also pretty similar in how concerning he is around patients. Hickey hates patients, is a master manipulator and will ultimately be a forensic pathologist or a radiologist.
Harry Goodsir: the nicest guy you will ever meet. His parents are doctors, his siblings are doctors, and he'd probably be happier doing marine biology or something, but he knows his stuff
Stephen Stanley: yk what, I can't even imagine him as a med student, but he's the terrifying consultant you meet on placement who hates students, is patronising to patients, and the nurses warn you about him beforehand. The irl guy is a rheumatologist, but I think Stanley would be a surgeon
Alexander McDonald: really nice GP who's encouraging when you don't know anything and chill when you show up to placement and haven't slept in a week
John Smart Peddie: that guy who doesn't show up to lectures but still aces his exams.
Francis Crozier: that guy situational judgement questions are about. Will show up reeking of alcohol and you have to decide whether to confront him, do nothing, or tell your supervisor and whether an action is very appropriate, appropriate but not ideal, inappropriate but not awful, or a very inappropriate thing to do
James Fitzjames: has a crush on a consultant for like 6 months after seeing him in a corridor twice. Friends with the copious amounts of public school boys, who think he's one of them. If he went to public school, it was on a bursary. Will disappear off the earth after med school and transition.
John Franklin: popular, but slightly shit lecturer. Very dull, but none of his information is actually on the slides so you have to pay attention. People like him for unknown reasons. Somewhere on Facebook there's rumoured to be some sort of incriminating video of him.
Edward Little: would actually be a really good doctor, but needs to gain confidence and people skills. Panics when asked to direct a team. Lived with awful people in halls in his first year
George Hodgson: bit of an odd guy, friends with Edward Little and drags him on nights out. Parents are probably doctors and/or loaded. Went to a local public school, didn't board.
John Irving: religious, attends the weirdly culty Christian Union multiple times a week. Tries to convert people. Generally a nice guy until he comes out with his views on gay marriage, gender-affirming care or abortions. Least worst of Edward Little's first year flatmates.
Graham Gore: boarded at a top tier public school. Popular, plays rugby, gets way more opportunities than anyone else because of the way public school radiates off him and the older consultants love him. Will probably say something homophobic, but he went to a traditional all-boys school and doesn't realise it until it's pointed out to him. Lives in the Cotswolds or something.
Henry "Dundy" le Vesconte: Londoner, probably went to Harrow. Plays hockey and is friends with Fitzjames and Gore. Still goes by nickname from school. Thinks nurses and allied health professionals are slightly beneath him.
James Fairholme: drops out and is never seen again
Thomas Blanky: outdoorsy guy, will probably end up working on air ambulances or something. Great fun to have a pint with
Thomas Jopson: scarily organised, has ten different highlighters and knows his calendar for the next month. Will never be dress coded. One of those people who has some sort of medical based trauma that pushed them into medicine
Billy Gibson: bitchy nurse, hates students and doesn't want them there
Tommy Armitage: has a fat crush on Sol Tozer. Would do better in exams if he didn't spend so much time helping him
John Bridgens: mature student, did biochemistry or biomedical sciences, worked for a few years before applying to med school. Helps Harry Peglar with his academics and the two end up dating aged 19 and 29 or something. Peglar asks Bridgens if he remembers 9/11 prompting the older man to have a miniature crisis when he realises his boyfriend wasn't even alive.
Harry Peglar: the most unserious man alive. Learned to read quite late and grew up in a murder hotspot. Brilliant at consultation and clinical skills, but struggles academically. Manages to have a panic attack that mimics a heart attack over his own heart rate after not sleeping for 72 hours.
Sol Tozer: lad. Plays on the rugby team with Gore. First in his family to go to university, but his younger sister is following him.
Sophia Cracroft: that girl who does it all somehow. Academic weapon, very organised, social butterfly, consultants love her. Gets hit on by Crozier twice, which is wildly inappropriate because she's his student. She ends up reporting him, triggering a review that uncovers his alcoholism.
Silna: international student who has the best comms skills in the entire cohort but otherwise doesn't speak to anyone. Perpetually put in the same group as Gore and le Vesconte. Hates this.

Look, I didn’t beg anyone for The Terror brainrot, but I’m afraid I fell into it like sir John into that hole in the ice.
I’m so very sorry.
There have been many posts about Gender Fitzgender… Which made me think that our boy (???) James would just enjoy the world before the Great Male Renunciation (basically the time when men decided that frills and colours were not manly enough and went for plain outfits). So I gifted him some precious antique outfits he might have enjoyed. The last one is very French, but whatever. The Brits need to experience some style, right.
PS: If this gets more than 200 reactions, I will donate him the female dresses from these era as well. /totally not a reblog bait, lol

Potentially 'hot take' about The Terror book/show - I read the book first and fell absolutely in love with it - I finished it in a week. The book obviously has its faults as D. Simmons is a freak man. I also just finished watching the show! I do prefer the book except I like the ending of the show more.
My take is that you should both watch the show AND read the book. I got my book second hand so I didn't give Simmons any more money but there is so much detail and backstory the show couldn't fit in. Some of your favorite guys probably have more detail and even different characterization in the book!
#currently reading the book#out of interest#has anyone checked dan simmons hard drive#because there are way too many sexual descriptions of underage girls#like way too many#the terror

welcome to the HMS Terribus!
features:
- Neptune is the official bus driver for the expedition
- Tuunbaq has decided that the Terribus is evil (keeping Neptune trapped inside) and hunts it down to kill it.
- Terribus’s cat Fagin enjoys the views, is quite upset when Tuunbaq eventually breaks in
- Silna attempts to mitigate Tuunbaq’s destruction but stops after Hodgson accidentally almost backs the bus over some locals (the family is fine, thanks very much)
- Silna thinks: “i hate tourists”
additional notes:
- Billy Gibson & Hickey hanging out behind the bathrooms. Hickey is nauseous and about to be sick all down billy’s font
- the Marines (+tommy) are all tangled in each other. intricate rituals and all that shit
- manson and hartnell enjoy watching the scenery
- Bridgens, Peglar, and des voeux are in a book club together
- peglar regularly ‘accidentally’ falls asleep onto bridgens
- des voeux is frequently disturbed by george hodgson practicing clarinet in the bus
- actually everyone is distracted by that hodg please put it away its loud
- irving discovers that neptune is their driver and spends most of his time panicking and praying for deliverance (he doesnt want to be in a crash)
- crozier and fitzjames keep having fistfights. hairpulling etc
- nedward is stuck up front but he would really rather be anywhere else
important:

"but courageous in sorrow" | read on ao3
Two years ago, in 1850, Edward Little was hanged outside Newgate Prison. In 1852, James Little comes to seek closure from the man his brother died for.
my humble contribution to @sailoutsummerfest feat. really sad and emotionally charged conversations with your sort-of-in-law

Thinking about how in The Terror the societal norms must break down at some point while they’re walking out. At some point ranks become less rigid. At some point certain things are more acceptable to do in terms of physical affection. No one batted an eye when Bridgens picked Peglar up bridal style and carried him to one of the boats. They even gave them space. Goodsir was not concerned with the way Hickey and Billy touched each other before Hickey kills Billy. Crozier says at some point that they can sleep two to a sack like the orphans they are. Physical closeness is no longer such a problem between these men.
Imagine if they got rescued. They’d all have to learn to conform again. I feel like it would be so hard to let go of that freedom they had. It would be hard to put on their dress uniforms and go to big parties with bright lights and loud music. Where no one is allowed that physical comfort of another man so close to him as they were allowed to be out on the shale. Waking up alone in bed at night from nightmares with no one to tell them that they’re safe. How do you move on from that?
