“then you are free” is the HALLMARK of colonialism and homosexuality. it is a genuinely kind thing to say, genuinely good, genuinely the RIGHT thing to say, but without even realizing it, francis continues to play into empire. the colonies were a haven of european homosexuality — the french called sodomy doing it colonial style for the precise reason that colonies (and prospective colonies) were a realm in which queer europeans could act out parts of themselves acceptable only in non european society, even as they fought tooth and nail to conquer said society for the empire.
