Sam had always gone to church ever since she was little. But living there was another thing and a half. Its not like she had a choice though, and she understood that as best any 12 year old could.

She still wasnât happy about it by any means, watching her baba skip work day after work day on the couch was scary. So was loosing the house, but she couldnât find it in her heart to blame him, as much as part of her wanted to, she missed ama too.

At least it wasnât all bad, the priest had given them a place to live for the time being, and while they werenât all that welcomed it was better than living out in the streets. Besides there was a huge creek for her and her brother to explore, and the priests kid seemedâŠ. Nice.

THE LABYRINTH/GENERAL CHURCH LOGIC

Itâs split into two parts. Conscious and subconscious. The conscious part of what remains of Lucas has placed itself in an elaborate dreamscape of old memories( a âlabyrinthâ if you will) a feeble attempt at comprehending his new form.
As for the subconscious, it has taken on the crucial role of survival. Lucas is still human after all. While his body may not be, the very fabric of his being still is and that will never change, and so it requires the same needs to stay alive, albeit adapted into a different form.

In simpler terms: fuel. Without it, Lucasâs memories and all his consciousness that manifests will fade away. Like a second death but no afterlife. He will starve and consequently cease to exist.
However, Lucas in this new form doesnât have the tools necessary to eat. He doesnât have teeth or a mouth or a stomach to digest food (at least not in the traditional sense) so the subconscious has to adapt to meet these needs.
Parts of the church become more than just rooms in a building but crucial parts of a larger body designed to digest food slowly and overtime. Like one massive pitcher plant. And what is this new âfood sourceâ? the regular patrons of the church.
But its not as simple as someone walking into the building every Sunday and the building just taking a bite out of them. In his this initial state, he is very weak, and only has the strength to go for one target. He can only take away from one person, one person similar to him. In age, maybe in personality. Someone in a vulnerable position.

Lucas.

after being peer pressured to provoke an already violent Rottweiler with a sparkler, Lucas Bernard is pushed down and falls to his death.
His dad, a local priest, like any grieving father he spreads his ashes in the churches garden. This one simple act for no rhyme or reason leads to his sonâs resurrection but not in the traditional sense.
Theres no pentagrams or candles or any spell books, just this one act, and what remains of his son tethers to the church itself (as in the literal building).
His vents become his nervous system, the garden his digestive system and the church organ his respiratory system.
But heâs still human, he still has a human brain and human instinct and neither of which were meant for this form and it barely has the ability to comprehend it.
The birth of the labyrinth.
