when reading the way of kings, adolin struck me as "aromantic and absolutely clueless about it". he didn't strike me as acespec - he clearly has no problems with his sexuality - so perhaps the specific way he acts is less immediately recognisable as arospec, but to me, at least, his total failure in romantic relationships seems very much like a young man who knows that he's supposed to be romancing young women, but cannot for the life of him understand how to do it. and he doesn't understand why it never works out, because once he gets past the initial stage of "girl hot", he never really wants to do any more than be friends with the woman he's courting. thus all his "dates" are abysmal, because he genuinely doesn't get that the women he's courting want to do conventionally romantic things with him, and that giving them a tour of the war camps or talking about horses (which register to him as fun friend activity -> basically romance, right?) is not, in fact, romantic. he doesn't feel romantic attraction, and lacks the framework both for engaging with typically romantic activities and understanding that he doesn't experience romantic attraction, so he just assumes everyone else feels the same way he does (sex + friendship). he has so many exes, all of whom seem to grasp that there's something he's not doing right, yet he doesn't seem to realise this. it would also go some way in explaining why he's so chill about being betrothed to a stranger he's never met - yay, my cousin is sorting out Romance (TM) for me! now i don't have to figure out how to get a woman to love me! shallan is refreshing - and relieving - for him precisely because she's fine doing friend activities with him, so he doesn't have to struggle with an attraction he doesn't feel. and whether he genuinely does fall in love with shallan, but it takes a close emotional bond, or if he's just happy to be married to a hot friend for the rest of his life, that's very much not how the rest of the world does things.

You'd think growing up aro/ace would make someone immune to the "you must strive to be sexy and beautiful" pressure of society. But I think it can actually make it worse because, lacking your own internal frame of reference, you just get left absorbing the cultural signals that the minimum bar for attractive is a 10/10 bombshell 23-year-old skinny white Hollywood actress with significant makeup and some plastic surgery.
Like it takes longer to gather the life experience to recognize average-looking and even "ugly" people are attractive and desirable to a significant portion of the population.

Stormlight responses to "If you kill a murderer..."
Lirin: If you kill a murderer, the number of murderers in the world remains unchanged.
Nale: Incorrect. "Murder" refers to an unlawful killing, and I AM the Law. Therefore I am incapable of being a murderer.
Szeth: No, the surgeon is right. Killing stains the soul. Even killing a murderer. Even killing in defense of your own life. You are irrevocably broken by the act, so you might as well just keep killing, and killing, and killing, and killing...
Kaladin: I... I can't quite articulate why, but I don't think that's right. Any of you.
Dalinar: Why would I kill a murderer? A murderer is just a man who has yet to take the next step on his journey. *watching Taravangian ascend to evil godhood* Any minute now...
Adolin, a Chad and a King: Alright, fine. If I kill a murderer, the number of murderers remains unchanged. But you know what does drop precipitously? The number of future victims! If that makes me a murderer, then so be it.
Jasnah: A noble sentiment, but you misunderstand the problem. It is not a question of ethics, but of mathematics. I killed four murderers on my way here, thus dropping the total number of murderers by three.
Moash: Oh sure, it's cool and badass when she, a royal, does it. But when I kill a murderer who the law was never going to touch...
Shallan: *looks up from counting on her fingers* Jasnah, how do you account for the new alter you create to cope with the guilt? Wouldn't that still put you at an unchanged number of murderers?
Renarin: ... Why are all of your alters murderers?!

i had a dream that there was like a revival of the man vs bear debate but instead it was "would you rather be alone in a woman's bathroom with a random trans woman or jk rowling?" and everyone picked the trans woman and jkr crashed out on twitter because of it
